So much for having our own Matthias Kiwanuka type player. Alex Albright, the Cowboys 'Swiss Army knife' linebacker/pass rusher who was so versatile he even lined up at TE ocassionally in training camp, is out for the season. While it doesn't sting so bad because this team has George Selvie slowly coming on as our primary backup defensive end, at 6"4 1/2 265 Albright could've have given us some pop at the backup SAM DE spot now vacated after an injury shut down Cameron Sheffield. No wonder the front office has been bringing in big defensive ends who may not be outstanding rushers but have some stoutness against the run for the past week. When this training camp opened I said DL depth behind our starters was an even bigger concern for me than along the offensive line. As I still expect a Brian Waters or other veteran signing soon, I still expect the defensive line depth to be a problem going forward should Anthony Spencer's return be delayed. Expect to see a lot of Ben Bass at SAM DE this week at Valley Ranch to see if he can provide an answer following his one-sack performance at Arizona. Plus, the down roster guys like Tank Reed and Caleb McSurdy fighting for the last (7th?) linebacker spot now have one less competitor -- and no competitors who can also play DE.
