As we know; the last preseason game is not only a chance for bubble guys to make a final statement to their coaches; it is also a chance to "audition" for the other 31 teams in the league. It is, if you will, a "second chance" draft for both players and teams. With that in mind, and considering that the defensive line is a position of depth in Houston and one of need in Dallas, was Thursday night an opportunity for rookie Chris Jones to audition for the Dallas Cowboys?
According to various outlets here in Houston, the sixth round selection out of Bowling Green has been waived by the Texans, and the team intends to sign him to the eight man practice squad if he clears waivers. That could turn in to a pretty big if. Jones has played well during the preseason; unfortunately, he got caught in the numbers game behind both Earl Mitchell and Terrell McClain. Against the Cowboys, Jones aquitted himself well, accounting for three tackles; two of which were solo efforts. He also added one of the seven sacks of Alex Tanney.
During his collegiate career at Bowling Green, Chris Jones was twice named the teams captain, and twice earned All-MAC first team honors. For 2012, he was the Mid America Conference's Defensive Player of the Year. It was a season that would also bring third team All America honors from the Associated Press. For the season, Jones recorded 42 tackles (including 19 for a loss) and 12.5 sacks. For good measure he added two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. His numbers from the previous year were almost as impressive.
From where I sit, Chris Jones looks like a young Jay Ratliff type. He is undersized for a nose tackle, but has the ability to penetrate the backfield and cause choas for the offense. He has some position flex, having moved outside to play defensive end as well, although his best efforts have been on the inside. This is one player that I hope the Cowboys take a long and serious look toward claiming off of the waiver wire.
What say you, BtB? Would you like to see the Cowboys take a chance on Chris Jones?
