With talk of Dallas looking for its Best 5 Olinemen, does that mean:
A. Smith, Leary, Frederick, Free and Parnell, or
B. Smith, Leary, Frederick, Bernardeau and Free, or
C. Smith, Bernardeau, Frederick, Free and Parnell, or
D. Some other combination?
What do you think and why? What do you think the Dallas coaches are going to do?
My own take is A.
I'm basing it on several things. First, Dallas was talking about upgrading at guard even before Leary went down. This tells me they weren't happy with Bernardeau.
Second, Dallas started the Free experiment at guard after the deal with Brandon Moore fell apart and Brian Waters chose not to accept the same offer.
Third, the Free Parnell experiment became possible when Parnell was finally able to practice. At the time Dallas said they would have tried it sooner if Parnell had been healthy. I think they considered this for some time and not as an emergency contingency once Livings was hurt and Leary needed a scope.
Fourth, the way the roster looks now really only makes sense if Free is a guard. Otherwise Arkin would be the only backup guard and you would be taking Weems on merit as a fourth tackle and not because you need a game day swing tackle.
Fifth, Jerry Jones heaped tons of praise on Free's play at guard in the Cincy game.
That's why I'd vote A. And I'm happier with this than with Bernie inside. I think Free will hold up better against tje rush and will move better to get to second level blocks than Bernie. Parnell doesn't move like Free but he has twice the punch so it will be much harder to beat him with power moves.
It's a pick your poison half solution, but if Parnell grows into his tackle role like we all thought he might during the offseason the line could be much stronger and capable of showing improvement over the course of the year. Meanwhile, Bernie's not improving at guard.
If A is how it shakes out, it will mean another season with new starters at 4 OL positions. Can't say Dallas doesn't churn the O-line. Let's just hope they get it right this time.
