I gotta come out and eat my words. That was putrid performance by the defense as a whole and the defensive line in particular. As I sit here and write this the game is not over yet and there is certainly blame enough to go around with all the drops and a brainless drive killing fumble. Carter was so bad he got benched and Lee got beat for 6, but the story of the game is the defensive line which had surprised us all. They were a whole lot of nothing. Hatcher got one good pressure play leading to the pick 6, but beyond that they got owned... and by a line consisting of 3 second stringers and a rookie. For all Hatcher's speechmaking, his unit in particular went out and laid a big giant egg.
I saw some good play from Barry Church, and Wilcox just made a nice tackle to give us one more chance, but the lack of urgency from the team as a whole and the defense in particular does give the lie to the idea that this was a different team.
Perhaps we were wrong after all. Can't say enough about this team's utter failure to seize the opportunity to win a winnable game and take a commanding lead. Perhaps there's a miracle waiting, but it does not matter. The team came out sloppy and flat and that shows that they have, in fact learned nothing.
Color me bitter. But I'm standing here to own up to the fact that my pets absolutely cost us this game and made our whole season significantly harder.
