Slowing the Cool-Aid Train

As a Dallas Cowboys fan since birth, growing up in the Philadelphia area, I have to become overly optimistic at the beginning of each and every season to maintain my loyalty. This season I have become an addict, following each and every story on the Mothership ESPN, and BTB to name a few.

Unfortunately, this year will not be nearly as successful as I have been dreaming it to be. The reason? The team that Dallas is trying to imitate to attain stardom has Bill Belichick. Do I think Dallas will be able to improve by copying the 12 personnel and hurry up mode? Yes. Do I think Jason Garrett has what it takes to inspire? Yes. So What is the problem then?

The media. Bill Belichick hides his players from it. Jason Garrett does not. Instead he is forced to have way too many press conferences answering questions about leaked draft boards, high expectations, and job security. These things weigh on his mind in crucial game situations disallowing him the freedom to make the necessary calls to win the game. Let me give you an example.

Rewind to 2010: 2:08 remaining. Up six points. Bill Belichick goes for it at his own 28 yard line on 4th and 2. Although the Patriots would lose this contest. It is this FAITH and CONFIDENCE that Belichick inspires in his team that makes them so successful. In this case he lost, but I think the Patriots track record speaks for itself. My issue in Big D with all of the media and hype and the organization's open-book philosophy would not allow Garrett to make this call. He would be crucified for it.

The shame of it all is that Belichick was second guessed. And HE DID NOT CARE. He moved on with his decision and successfully avoided the Cool-Aid Train. For Dallas to become successful, they would be wise to do the same.
