First off, of course I'm ecstatic that Dallas has come to its senses and decided to pony up the money needed to bring in Brian Waters at right guard!!! I think it's the best free agent move Dallas has made in a long time.
But this is not an "I love Brian Waters" post. There's plenty of that on the home page post about him.
I just want to clear up one thing.
There’s a lot of talk that Brian Waters didn’t want to go to training camp or pre-season. I think this is a false narrative that gives a false impression of Brian Waters.
We now know the contract details. $1.5 million guaranteed base, with $1.5 million more to be earned in incentives. This is basically the deal that he played for in 2011 with New England. And it’s also $1 million MORE than Dallas "signed" Brandon Moore for, before Moore changed his mind and decided to stay retired in New Jersey.
What Brian Waters wanted was his PRICE. $3 million with incentives, not $2 million with smaller incentives. Until Dallas met it, he was willing to stay home and keep working out on his own.
Instead of meeting Waters’ price several weeks ago when the Brandon Moore deal fell through, Dallas chose instead to experiment with Doug Free at guard and Jeremy Parnell at tackle. This wasn’t an unreasonable choice to make, as it would save the team $3 million and might upgrade the problem, which is Bernardeau at right guard. What they discovered was that Free could in fact play guard. The problem was that Parnell isn’t really ready to play tackle. He might get there, but Dallas ultimately decided they couldn’t rely on it.
Once the Free/Parnell experiment didn’t work, Dallas was back to two bad choices — Bernardeau or Parnell — in the starting line. At that point, Dallas came around to the notion it was worth $3 million to keep both of those guys on the bench.
Dallas, not Brian Waters, needs to take 100% of the responsibility for not having Brian Waters ready to go in game 1.
