The Weekly BEast Report Special Edition: Redskins To Hire Jay Gruden

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

There is breaking news around the NFC East and The Weekly BEast Report is there to keep you informed of what recently transpired in the "enemy camp".

Most recently the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, Gruden has reportedly inked a five-year deal to lead RGIII and the Washington Redskins. In addition to a 17-year resume of coaching experience, the younger brother of Super Bowl winning former head coach turned broadcaster Jon Gruden brings solid ties to many members of the current Washington staff.

Gruden has ties to some of the Redskins staff. He worked with general manager Bruce Allen, defensive backs coach Raheem Morris and tight ends coach Sean McVay while with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With Orlando of the UFL, he worked under defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, who brought Gruden on as his offensive coordinator, while McVay was the tight ends coach. When Haslett went to the Redskins, Gruden became the head coach in Orlando.

Jay Gruden becomes the sixth head coaching hire for Redskins owner Dan Snyder who bought the franchise in 1999. In that time Joe Gibbs, who was lured back into football by Snyder, is the only Washington coach to win a playoff game. Under the most recent head coach, Mike Shanahan, the Redskins have been subjected to double-digit losing seasons in four of the past five years. The only period of success was winning the NFC East in 2012.

Gruden will be expected to "re-energize" quarterback Robert Griffin III's young career. A former QB coach in addition to his offensive coordinator duties, he was key in the development of Bengals QB Andy Dalton, who helped to lead Cincinnati to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons in the league.
