I, just like all of you, have seen just about every NFL talking head (or writing hand) take a crack at decifering what's happening with all of the coaching changes a Valley Ranch. We've heard that Garrett is finally exercising a level of authority that is the Standard Operating Procedure in most NFL cities. We've also heard that Jerry didn't want to let Callahan or Kiffin go to save face. After hearing & reading a lot of opinions, I have come up with one of my own that is not new but a little different take on what is a commonly held belief among Cowboys fans and detractors alike. I see three major reasons for the current state of the Cowboys coaching staff.
1) Jerry's ego - as mentioned above it is widely believed that the Cowboys owner does not want to admit that his "off season of discomfort" was a lot of noise but basically useless in improving the team's on field results.
2) Jerry's ego - it seems clear that Jerry believes that a successful Garrett would provide him with the credit as a "football man" that he craves like a fat kid craves cake so he's willing to give him a little more leeway in bringing on Linehan to appease his hand picked head coach.
3) Jerry's ego - this is where I will try to put a new spin on this story. NO 4th ranked defense with Jerry's castoff calling the plays. Let that marinate for a minute or two.
Wait, that is only 1 reason. My bad! Taking #3 at its face would finally give some clarity to why Callahan is not only still on staff, but was denied multiple opportunities to call plays in B-more or Cleveland. I don't believe Jerry's ego (there it is again) could take the sight of Callahan coordinating someone else's offense to the playoffs like Ryan did last month. While there's no guarantee this would happen, the mere thought of that was enough IMO for him to prevent the possibility.
So if you're wondering like the rest of Cowboys nation why Bill Callahan still has an office at Valley Ranch look no further than Jerry's ego and two words: Rob Ryan!
