Clearly Aaron Donald is shooting up draft boards across the country. Living in the UK, I really don't get to see much college football, so I will have to accept the tape on Donald is strong. I was interested how Donald's combine performance compared with the consensus All Pro DE/DTs currently in the NFL. The table below provides that comparison (apologies for the basic format, no idea how to insert a predrawn table). Name Donald Suh McCoy Poe Quinn Watt Williams Ht 73 76 76 76 76 77 79 Wt 285 307 295 346 265 290 295 40yd 4.68 5.03 5.04 4.89 4.62 4.81 4.70 Bench 35 32 23 44 22 34 35 Vertical 32 35.5 30.5 29.5 34 37 40.5 Broad 116 105 114 105 116 120 120 20yd 4.39 4.44 4.48 4.56 4.40 4.37 4.37 3 cone 7.11 7.21 7.32 7.90 7.13 6.88 7.21 This may be a fairly blunt comparison, but across 36 possible comparisons here, Aaron Donald is only beaten 11 times (I'm not comparing height/weight). Comparing Donald with individual players, then he beats each of the three defensive tackles on at least 5 of the 6 measurables. Comparing Donald to the All Pro DEs, he is pretty comparable to Quinn and slightly bettered by J.J. Watt and Mario Williams. I'm sure someone could provide a more in depth analysis of the positional significance of each of these drills, but to me, this suggest that there is every chance that Donald has All Pro potential. And looking at the internet this morning, most fanbases seem to think the same thing. Could Donald go 1st in the NFL draft. I don't think it is beyond the realm of possibility. But i am certainly getting that Jonathan Cooper kind of feeling i.e. he won't end up anywhere near the 16th choice in this draft.
