Reality Check...State Of The Cowboys.

First Superbowl where I didn't watch a single minute. Didn't bother watching anything on television weeks leading up to the game. I'm actually pretty indifferent to the outcome of the game. I only really know the final score of the game, but can pretty much predict every storyline that sports media is filing today. Everyone could predict the storylines weeks ago, because "journalism" (I use this term very loosely) is nothing what it used to be. Peyton deservedly won the league MVP, and was the primary reason the Broncos even made it to the Superbowl, but he's a choker this morning. His legacy is tainted and tarnished. On the other side, the Seahawks are a burgeoning "dynasty" and every one of their players are future hall of famers. Their "poop" literally doesn't stink. What cheeses me off is how we have become a nation of followers with few that have independent thought. The story should be that the Seahawks outplayed the Broncos because they were the most balanced team. Like every team in the salary cap era, you can find weaknesses on every team. Dynasties don't exist anymore because of free agency. Why can't we just congratulate a victor without gravitating towards hyperbole? Yes, the Seahawks DESERVE to win. Yes, the Seahawks should enter next season as the team to beat. But remember that there is such parity in the league that it won't be a surprise if a bottom rung team (more likely teams...plural...ahem like the Panthers and Chiefs this year) ascend to be a contender. This is the REALITY. Not what the media outlets are serving up. The reality isn't tantalizing enough.

What can Cowboy fans reasonable expect from our team next year? Will we make the playoffs? Will we suck? I can easily answer that question if you tell me 2 things...Will we be relatively healthy throughout the year?...and, Will we field a solid Defense? If you say yes to both, I would feel confident that we will not only make the playoffs, but we would make some noise. These are the 2 primary reasons we have not made the playoffs every year since the Romo era began. We have consistently gotten unlucky injuries at the worst possible times, and have not fielded a Defense that wasn't a liability. For all the front page articles about our Offense and Scott Linehan these past weeks...why hasn't there been more articles about the shift to Marinelli running the Defense? Isn't that the real linchpin to our future success? We're going to field a good offense no matter who is calling plays. We are a perennial top 10 Offense. What holds us back every year is our Defense. FIX THE DAMN DEFENSE! Stop giving up cheap end of half scores. Stop teams from scoring at the end of games and get off the damn field. You might be very surprised how much better the Cowboys look if they just had a consistently AVERAGE Defense. Consistently average would be a marked improvement over what it has been the last 6-7 years. Every year I can rattle off numerous games where Romo made great plays at the end of games, but when was the last time Demarcus Ware had that? 2009 Saints game? It's sad that I have to go back 4 years to find one. But Romo is a choker, while Ware is a future Hall of Famer? Why are we more critical about our most consistent players and the most consistent side of our team and give the worst part of our team a virtual free pass? Why does our Offense and Special Teams have to compensate every week for poor Defensive play? Why does our HC have to manage games with a mind towards protecting our Defense every week? FIX THE DAMN DEFENSE!
