Pseudo GM

Last February, I wrote a lengthy Fan Post banging the table to trade DeMarcus Ware. My argument centered on Jerry Jones being too emotionally attached to his players and thereby holding on to them for too long. "At this point in his career, DeMarcus has a tendency to start off the year hot and then fade down the stretch."

We heard all the stories coming out of training camp that DeMarcus was the best player on the field and routinely schooled Tyrone Smith. Then, of course, DeMarcus did his typical fade down the stretch and even when healthy, he was a non-factor. Now that his trade value has spiraled further downward, I don't anticipate us getting much back in way of draft picks. Our only hope would be a team that runs the 3-4 defense and thinks he still has some gas in the tank. Maaaayyybe we get a 4th round pick for him. However, if we get a chance to dump his $16 million dollar cap hit, I say we do it. Every year we struggle with the Salary Cap and then Steven Jones works his "magic" and we end up under the threshold. The problem with our strategy is that eventually you have to pay "dead" money to players who are long past their prime or no longer with the team. If the Salary Cap number doesn't rise significantly in 2015, we could be in big trouble retaining talent. I think Ware and Austin have to go, or at the very least take BIG pay cuts....

Draft Targets...I'll stop after 2 rounds because I believe the draft board is far from settled. My Round 1 guys could easily slide to the 2nd Round and my 2nd Round guys could move up into the 1st. However, I really like these guys and think they could make a big difference for our Cowboys.

1st Round--

Marquise Lee WR USC. Lee has DeSean Jackson top-end speed, but he is also a mechanic on the route tree and has very good polish. If he didn't play with a gimpy knee this season, he would be a top 5 pick. If we are able to get rid of Austin, a guy like Lee makes sense in the 1st round. His talent is undeniable and Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, and Lee would be one of the best WR groups in the NFL.

HaHa Clinton-Dix Safety Bama. I'm not in love with his physicality, but he does play with range and good instincts.

Aaron Donald DT Pitt. What's not to like? Perfect 3 technique. His ability to rush the QB from inside the pocket is reminiscent of the great Warren Sapp.

Louis Nix DT Notre Dame. Luke Kuechly was very good before Star Lotulelei came to the Panthers, but he turned

into an MVP with big man. A space eater like Nix would really free up Sean Lee and take our defense to new heights.

Calvin Pryor Safety Louisville. To be honest, I have not seen much film on him, but we need a Safety desperately and him and Clinton-Dix are the top 2 guys. I like his size at 6'2 210. In the mold of the Seattle Seahwaks Legion of Boom.

2nd Round--

Louis Murphy OLB/DE Stanford- Versatile player who is tough and smart. You can win Super Bowls with a guy like Murphy. Fits the Garrett RKG philosophy. Murphy could push into the 1st round if runs well at the combine.

Zack Martin OT Notre Dame- I see him in a few mock drafts in the 2nd round, but realistically he will probably be a late 1st round player. Loved his play at Notre Dame. He can bend in the hips and waist and he plays with power and technique. Could kick inside to guard early in his career.

Steven Tuit DT/DE Notre Dame- The kid has all the talent in the world and I think he got off to a bad start last year due to injuries. He could end up being the steal of the draft if he falls into the 2nd round. I could see Tuit becoming Defensive Rookie of the Year. Incredible talent. I'm not certain he is a good fit for our scheme, but if he is available in the 2nd round, I believe you take him and figure it out.

Cyril Richardson OG Baylor. Monster size. Smith, Leary ,Frederick, Richardson, Free would be a nice o line. We could definitely get push up front with that group.

Will Sutton DT Arizona State. Two time Pac-12 Player of the Year on defense. LOVE his motor and his ability to play with leverage. Perfect fit for our defense.
