Goodell had to hate this Superbowl. Seattle mocked his years of trying to stamp out physical, defensive football in favor of high-flying offenses and NBA-style "star" promotion. Gang-tackling, wince-inducing hits, roughing up Peyton Manning and big-boying tiny Wes Welker. It was glorious.
I don't particularly like Seattle. But they did it the right way. They've had some bad juju in the first round of the draft. Their stars were mainly 3rd - 6th round players that other teams passed on. They just had a great concept (big, smart, hard-hitting guys) and execution.
Remember when we had Parcells and teams had such a terrible record the week after playing Dallas? With minimal talent, the team was so physical and so well coached that opponents needed more than a week to recover. I hope we find a way back there. Even if we don't win 12 games in a season, it is really nice to know that your guys are going to knock the stuffing out of your opponents week in and week out. And, as Seattle proved, often that type of physical attitude leads to winning football.
The hitting reminds me of this clip from Patrice O'Neil where he talks about his frustration over what football is becoming.
