After reading this site for a few years now I decided to make my first fan post. Like many of you I'm beyond frustrated over the last few years of having talent but not cracking past a .500 record. I completely agree there appears to be a new outlook on roster management for the boys and for the most part I like it. We are moving in the right direction but I think it's going to get much worse before it gets better.
With that said I'm curious to get everyone's opinion on. Here are two hypotheticals to choose from. Let's say the cowboys remain relatively quiet this offseason, no Melton, no Hatcher return, just JAG signings like Mincey today and hoping for the best. they focus on the draft and building the team that way. In this hypothetical the team struggles mightily next year and earns a top 3 pick, maybe even number one. They can draft a player like Jameis Winston who many say would be the #1 now if eligible and have a new cornerstone to build around with many other young talents around him stemming from the last few years of drafting and shedding old/bad contracts.
The second hypothetical is continuing what we have been trying, rebuilding on the fly, while still fitting the new roster management philosophy. We sign Melton, maybe make another good few moves or a trade and a solid draft to boot. Things go well, we stay healthy and Dallas makes the playoffs. Maybe even to the SB. However at the end of the year we are one year older with everyone, still tight on the cap and lower in the draft. Maybe even low on picks if we made a trade. which hypothetical would you choose? a high draft pick and rebuild or ride the hopes on a lucky SB run after making the playoffs?
i will always cheer every Sunday for a win and I hope we win it all next year like I always do. However, if given these options I'd pick the first one. Which leads me to realize I'd be happier if the cowboys took the approach of building long term and not trying to build on the fly anymore. I always wanted Romo and the Senator to get their due in playoff wins but for the long term success (and happiness of fans) I fear the cowboys need a full blown rebuild. What says you?
