I love the mock drafts showing Dallas Cowboys drafting defensive lineman. From Aaron Donald and Timmy Jernigan to Dee Ford and Kony Ealy, the DL's are where I want them to go in Rd 1 of the draft. No doubt about it, DL is where they need to bolster talent. So, later rounds should bring more youth to the "Rushmen." A few draft boards show Cowboys selecting Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix and Calvin Pryor. Both excellent safeties that make plays. Either one would be a great addition to help the secondary immediately. But then again, CB Morris Claiborne was drafted to help the secondary and has yet to show that Top 10 quality.
So who do we get, DL, S or best available? Is there any free agent help that can fill the need? My answer is "yes." Reports indicate Dallas has interest in FS Thomas DeCoud. I think Barry Church is better suited in the FS position than in the SS spot with the current players on the roster. I suggest a different approach. With a little $ left in the cap, Dallas should sign Bears UFA - SS Major Wright. Stay with me here. Take a look at how he aligns to current safety Barry Church and 2013 stats.
- Age: Church - 26 y/o, Wright - 25 y/o,
- Tckl (combined/solo): Church - 135/107, Wright - 101/79
- INT: Church - 1, Wright - 2
- Forced Fumb: Church - 3, Wright - 2
- Pass Def: Church - 6, Wright - 3
Thomas DeCoud - 29 y/o, 65 combined Tckl, 0 - yes zero INT, 2 - PD, 0 - FF
So as you can see, Wright had a better year than DeCoud in what was a down year for Wright. Not only is Wright younger, but he can be had at less $$ than DeCoud. He can be had at around $1 Mil, just coming off his rookie deal. His so called "down year" last year was his first under a new defensive coordinator. And guess who was his coordinator prior.....Rod Marinelli. So to me it seems almost meant to be. Signing Major Wright would bolster the secondary, allow Church to play FS where he is better suited on this roster, lets Dallas focus on DL and OL in draft, and best of all he is young and inexpensive.
