Mock Draft

This mock draft assumes that Ware stays and that Hatcher and Austin are gone. Even if Spencer stays, anything we get from him is pure gravy, so I'm not counting on him to fill any need.

To get a basis for my mock, I used the online simulator on drafttek.com, which takes their rankings and each team's needs. They have a special analyst for each team that gets all the info for each team and inputs it into the software. You might be familiar with ours, Longball. Anyway, I made a few tweaks to the simulator, pretty much saying that we don't need ANOTHER CB, we don't need to draft a RB this year unless it's perfect value, we would draft a developmental QB at the right price, and that we might want to draft an OT.

So now our needs look like this (higher priority number means that we'll draft earlier and reach for it to a certain extent if needed)

3 - DT, DE

5 - WR, OT, OG, FS, OLB

6 - QB, FB

The rest are 9s, which pretty much won't be drafted by the sim (which I might override... spoiler alert). Also, I set TE at a 1, because obviously we need Jace Amaro with our first pick and Austin Sefarin-Jenkins with the second.

Anyway, I fired up the simulator and got this mock draft without doing anything else to it yet.

1. Kony Ealy DE Missouri

2. Kelcy Quarles DT South Carolina

3. Brandon Coleman WR Rutgers

4. Jimmy Garoppolo QB Eastern Illinois

5. Jonathan Brown OLB Illinois

7. Joe Bitonio OT Nevada

7. Kadeem Edwards OG Tennessee State

7. Jay Prosch FB Auburn

I'd be okay with this draft. I like Ealy in the 1st and Quarles in the 2nd, as well as Garoppolo and Bitonio later. I'm not in love with some of the other picks though, so let's do something else.

I have a theory that even if Donald makes it to us (which he does here), we should trade back with the Jets to 18. The reason for this is that neither the Jets nor the Ravens (who are immediately behind us) would be interested in Donald, who would still get to us if we traded back, but the Jets and Ravens are both in dire need of a receiver (as Dez Bryant laughs at them). If Marquise Lee or Mike Evans is there at 16, I think that the Jets would give up a 3rd round pick for the opportunity to jump Baltimore and put some pass catching talent around Geno Smith.

And so...

TRADE: NY Jets trade Dallas Cowboys picks 18 and 80 for 16.

Our new simulation looks like this:

Jets grab Marquise Lee at 16, who went to Baltimore in the previous simulation.

1. Kony Ealy DE Missouri

2. Kelcy Quarles DT South Carolina

3. Brandon Coleman WR Rutgers

3. Billy Turner OT North Dakota State

4. Jimmy Garoppolo QB Eastern Illinois

5. Denicos Allen OLB Michigan State

7. Jon Urschel OG Penn State

7. Tre Boston FS North Carolina

7. Jay Prosch FB Auburn

Now that's more like it, but I still think we can do better. This is the part where the override comes in. I believe that Aaron Donald is a better prospect than Kony Ealy, so we're taking him at 18.

This leaves our second round pick for a DE... or does it? Shayne Skov from Stanford looks like a Sean Lee mini-me on tape, he's a bit smallish and listed as an ILB on the Drafttek software, but I think he could play Will in our 4-3 considering we're looking for smaller defenders anyway. His instincts and play reading ability are off the charts, always around the ball, great hustle. He can also play Mike very well if/when Lee goes down.

Now pick 3 I don't like Brandon Coleman, so I'm changing the pick to DE Chris Smith from Arkansas. I think he's pretty underrated. He's not very polished, but he's a good speed rusher that I think Marinelli could do great things with.

Leaving Billy Turner as our 2nd 3rd rounder. I think he's going to be a great tackle in the NFL that gets drafted later because of small school bias.

Jimmy Garoppolo in round 4 is great value, starting QB of the future, backup QB of the present. Eastern Illinois connection with Romo, who he will learn from for 2-3 years before starting.

For the 5th round, we already have our LB, so we're going WR here. I really can't believe Martavis Bryant of Clemson is ranked this low, but I'll take it. I'd like to introduce you to our all beast receiving corp now.

In the 7th, I like Joe Bitonio from Nevada is better than Penn State's Jon Urschel and either he or Turner can play Guard, so there's our 2nd offensive linemen. I like Trey Millard as the best FB in the draft, so I'm substituting him for Jay Prosch. Tre Boston looks like a Calvin Pryor clone on tape, so I'm keeping that pick. Our draft now looks like this:

1. Aaron Donald DT Pitt

2. Shayne Skov LB Stanford

3. Chris Smith DE Arkansas

3. Billy Turner OT/OG North Dakota State

4. Jimmy Garoppolo QB Eastern Illinois

5. Martavis Bryant WR Clemson

7. Joe Bitonio OT/OG Nevada

7. Tre Boston FS North Carolina

7. Trey Millard FB Oklahoma.

There we have our new boss 3 tech in Donald, a Sean Lee clone/backup/competition for Carter, a DE with potential for Marinelli, two potential starting offensive linemen, our backup/future QB, another WR, so Cole Beasley/Dwayne Harris doesn't have to start if Dez or TWill goes down, more competition at Safety, and a do it all FB who can block, catch, run, and even play TE. You didn't think we'd really get out of this draft without one, did you?
