I discovered this sight a year ago and have really enjoyed it. I do not post comments all that often and have never really had a topic that I wanted to write a fanpost about. I'm actually a little intimidated to write a fanpost, but I wanted to talk about this topic a little so I figured I would give it a try.
I have been really curious about the offensive line lately because everyone has seemingly pushed it to the side, instead focusing on other needs such as the defensive line. And I get it. There was a huge need at basically every position along the defensive line, but it seems to me that the front office has really taken an initiative to fill some of those holes. They signed McClain, Mincey, and of course Melton to help fill holes left by Hatcher and Ware. They also have Bass and Crawford coming back from injury, and possibly even Spencer coming back if he is healthy enough. Jason Garrett always talks about filling holes in free agency so that you can draft BPA. And with the signings and the players coming back from injury I think the FO feels that they have done a good job filling those needs so that they can draft more BPA. Now that is certainly not to say that they will not draft a defensive lineman high because I think they certainly will, but overall it is not nearly at the critical level of need that it could have been at.
I say all of that because I feel the FO and the fans have somewhat forgotten about the offensive line. Now I realize that the offensive line was definitely a strength last year, but just looking at the current roster over at the mothership there is almost no depth along the offensive line. The offensive line right now consists of Fredbeard (C), Bernie (G/C), Leary (G), Free (T), Smith (T), Weems (T), Parnell (T), and Chris DeGeare (G). Now I personally am not feeling great about that. Taking a look inside is pretty worrying because if there is even one injury we will struggle to field an offensive line at all, much less a good one. Now they might plan on just waiting until after camp and signing Waters again, but he is a year older and coming off a season ending injury.
In my personal opinion the FO needs to sign a true backup center and guard before the draft. Otherwise it almost feels like it would be a necessity to draft one or two offensive lineman fairly early. I think it would have to be fairly early because they would need a player that is ready to step in immediately and play well if someone does go down. And given Leary's knees, Bernie's injury history lately, and the Cowboy's luck there is a pretty good chance that an injury could happen. So if the FO signs a couple of proven guys to be backups in the interior line, it would free them up to draft BPA, which is what they want to do.
Also, I feel we need to be finding Free's replacement soon. I'm not sure if either Parnell or Weems is that guy, or if a future draft pick is, but the FO needs to be thinking ahead on this. Free played great at the beginning of the 2013 season after an abysmal 2012, but really regressed again toward the end of the 2013 season. That is pretty worrying to me and regardless of how he plays this will most likely be his final year in Dallas. Heck, they could draft Zach Martin or even Billy Turner, and have them play inside for a year then kick outside when Free leaves, which would kill two birds with one stone. But once again, the FO wants to draft BPA and without signing anyone else before the draft they might be tempted to reach on those prospects.
Those are just my thoughts on the subject. Also, sorry for making this so long. Tell me what you think in the comments.
