There has been much discussion about how critical this draft is not only to this season but our focus and admittance of our teams shortcomings. Most of us or many feel defense has to be the focus and defensive line especially.
Our worse defense last year and bottom tier defense since our last playoff appearance in 2009 is by most experts and diehards I know to be the cause or at least root to our lack of success.
If not for our offense carrying us while being in one of if not the worse division we wouldn't have even been close to making playoffs. Last year is a great example winning 5 out of 6 in division while only winning 3 of 7 outside the division with all of those against last place teams.
I have seen where some fans are calling for a new franchise QB or new #2 WR needed in draft but this is how we have arrived where we are not placing more importance on our defense in recent drafts. We have a QB who is signed for at least 3 more years and our #2 WR is already on the roster with T-Will presenting perhaps our best 1-2 combination in years, not to mention Escobar from last year with Beasley and Harris adding some rotation.
Linehan is also known to use his RB's often having some of the top receptions on his teams. I could see Murray, Dunbar and Randle playing a bigger role while we could still pick up a veteran WR on waivers during cuts in training camps or a walk on FA to fill Miles absence which really hasn't been much in recent years.
This draft and possibly next year as well need to be all about the defense if we intend to get back to a championship level.
We see how good our offense can be and besides needing to continue to shore up our offensive line we have enough talent on offense but without a better defense it will be very difficult to make the progress we need to contend for the conference while possibly struggling to contend in this division.
