I have been reading all off-season that Dallas has to add an impact DL in the 1st round. It started with Aaron Donald, who has now built so much momentum that he will probably be drafted before 16. I was on board with Donald...mainly because I think that he can be a pro-bowl level 3 tech right away in Marineli's defense. That to me is the key. The player that we draft in the 1st round must be an impact defensive player that will not take long to develop. As I see it, there will only be a few scattered early in the draft. Clowney, Mack, Barr, and Donald are all in the category of impact defensive player, but all should be gone when we select. At that point we could deal down and grab probably another 3rd and select someone from the Ealy, Ford, Jernigan group....but all have question marks about how good they will actually be. They are defiantly not sure things. They could turn into pretty nice players, and if Dallas decides to go that route I won't complain.
There is, however, a player that I consider an immediate impact player on defense that will most likely be available. His name is CJ Mosley. The LB from Alabama is graded out as a 6.5 on NFL.com, which is 7th on their prospect list. They describe him as an instinctive, explosive player that can play any of our 3 LB positions. He is described as a high character, high football IQ, selfless team captain that gives maximum effort without taking plays off.
Adding Mosley would do a number of things for the Cowboys defense. He gives us another dynamic playmaking LB on the field. How many people have watched this defense fall apart when Sean Lee is out? We have had nobody that can replace him. Mosley is versatile enough that he can start at Will and slide over to Mike.We could also play Mosley at the Mike and shift Lee to the Will to protect Sean Lee to an extent. Regardless, adding Mosley will push Bruce Carter to the SAM, which improves 2 spots with one move.
After selecting Mosley, we should come right back and address the defensive line. A few possible scenarios:
2.DE in the 2nd (Scott Crichton, Kareem Martin, Demarcus Lawrence, Marcus Smith)
3.DT in the 3rd (Will Sutton, Daquan Jones, Justin Ellis)
2. DT in the 2nd (Hageman, Easley)
3. DE in the 3rd (Trent Murphy, Jackson Jeffcoat, Chris Smith, Will Clarke)
I prefer scenario #1 as long as one of those DT's are available. It conceivably adds 3 starters to the defense....at least the DL additions would be in our rotation.
What about Mosley's concerns? Well the health concerns have to be addressed, and if he is not healthy this whole scenario is out the window. So far reports are that he is checking out healthy, and teams right behind us are showing interest (Miami, Green Bay). One thing I do not agree with is the perception that playing from Alabama knocks him down. Rolando McClain being a bust should not make any difference for CJ Mosley.....just like Mark Ingram should not have affected Eddie Lacy.. Watching the tape of Mosley, you see an athletic instinctive LB making plays....it doesn't have anything to do with Alabama having a great defense. He has the skill to e a pro-bowl MLB in the NFL.
