The Trade Down Players we Lost

In the end we all knew this was the year you did not want to trade up. The players you would lose out on later would be too costly.

We could have traded down in the first round and received Cleveland's third round pick. They turned down that trade (along with other offers) and that pick we could have received from Cleveland happens to be Billy Turner - a guy our front office liked a lot. With the third round pick we lost to our own trade with Washington we could have added guard Trai Turner - another guy our front office liked a lot. To make matters worse we could have had Timmy Jurnigan with our second round pick. So to summarize our draft haul to this point could have been:

  1. Demarcus Lawrence
  2. Timmy Jurnigan
  3. Billy Turner
  4. Trai Turner

But instead:

  1. Zack Martin
  2. Demarcus Lawrence

I'm a Cowboys homer. Always will be. But it's impossible not to recognize what could have been. I'm also wondering where Will McClay is in all of this? I don't get the feeling that he has been on board how things have went.

It just seems to me that this organization was too afraid of trading away from the player the scouts had fallen in love with (2 years in a row). I have no doubt Zack Martin is going to be a fine player. But has to be. Grabbing a guard in the middle of the first round means you have to be a pro bowl type talent. If he is then he is just making the pick a validation nothing more. But I'll take a 20 year old guard with just as much talent, a polished right tackle, and a run stuffing monster up the middle of our d-line over Martin. Perhaps just as much pressure falls on Lawrence. If both of these guys are not hits this draft or at least the first three rounds of it is going to be deemed a bust. And whether our own players turned out to be 2 hits or not - the rest of the NFL got loads better too.

How this happened: The Cowboys were hoping Barr or Donald would fall to them but felt they had good trade back options in place had both of those players been picked. They went into the draft pretty much knowing there was little choice either of their coveted players would be there. Our draft really fell apart when the Giants took Odell Beckham. You could see it in the war room. They really hoped the Giants would take Martin. When they took the wide receiver that many teams had been coveting that destroyed the best trade back options that offered the maximum value. When Shazier went off the board it was another blow to their fallback plans. And we were left deciding between an obvious safe pick in Martin or trading down with less than traditional value being offered. So again:

  1. Demarcus Lawrence
  2. Timmy Jurnigan
  3. Billy Turner
  4. Trai Turner

Or reality:

  1. Zack Martin
  2. Demarcus Lawrence

I'm excited about the rest of the draft and hope we get some great players.
