I want to start off by saying I think this kid has a better chance of making the 53 than 7th round pick Will Smith. He is 6'1 and 230lbs which makes him small for an OLB or ILB. In the Cowboys 4-3 scheme I see him playing the weak side linebacker, because he can fly to the ball and lay a lick.
Keith Smith- This kid has great instincts and is not afraid of contact. When I watched him play, I was reminded of Kiko Alonso last year, in the sense of how they both fly to and around the ball. Obviously Alonso is the better athlete, but Smith makes up for his small stature with instincts and physicality. The knock on him is his weight at 230, but he is not afraid to blow up a 300lb guard in the hole. So many times did I see him read a play and set the edge or attack a gap and because of the lack of talent around him, the play was never made. I don't think I have watched a player in this years draft that is consistently around the ball as much as him, not just standing around, but on the ground assisting in the tackle. One of the things I really like about him that I hate about Anthony Hitchens is that Smith is always moving forward, where Hitchens likes to move laterally too much. I also see Hitchens give up ground when he scraps which is AWFUL for a LB. I think Smith needs a lot of work when dropping into zone coverage, but he does however have some experience in man.
This kid is going to make the final 53 on special teams. He shows no fear and flies to the ball. If Danny McCray can be a Cowboy for 3 years playing special teams, this kid definitely has a chance
