A Post Sean Lee guess at the 53 man roster

QB (2):

Tony Romo

Brandon Weeden

If Kyle Orton genuinely does not want to play football I don't see the upside of asking him to step in if Romo is hurt. The US armed services are voluntary for good reason. Let him go, and let the signing bonus go with him.

RB (4):

DeMarco Murray

Lance Dunbar

Joseph Randle

Tyler Clutts (FB)

The injuries on defense are bad news for the undrafted skill players like Malena and Washington. Ryan Williams will push Joseph Randle, but I'm hoping the injury bug causes Randle to get the nod. Clutts gets the nod over a fourth tight end. Copeland will push him, but I see him as a PS guy until he gets his weight down.

TE (3):

Jason Witten

Gavin Escobar

James Hanna

I think this is going to be a strong unit this year. No need for a fourth.

WR (5):

Dez Bryant

Terrance Williams

Cole Beasley

Dwayne Harris PR/KR

Devin Street (R)

Another light position to account for defensive depth. Hopefully Street can be the Bernadeau of the backups; able to play all three spots.

OL (8):

Tyron Smith OT

Ronald Leary OG

Travis Frederick C/OG

Zack Martin (R) OG/OT

Doug Free OT

Mackenzy Bernadeau OG/C

Jeremy Parnell OT

Darrion Weems OT

Cowboys beat writers seem pretty confident that Leary starts over Bernie, and also that the team really likes Weems.

DE (5):

George Selvie DE

Jeremy Mincey DE

Tyrone Crawford DE/DT

DeMarcus Lawrence (R) DE

Ben Gardner (R) DE/DT

I think Spencer starts the season on PUP.

DT (5):

Henry Melton DT

Amobi Okoye DT

Terrell McClain DT

Ben Bass DT

Ken Bishop (R) DT

The biggest limb I'm going out on: No Nick Hayden. This assumes Okoye is ready to play, and Bishop is worthy of a spot.

LB (7):

Bruce Carter OLB

Justin Durant OLB/MLB

DeVonte Holloman OLB/MLB

Kyle Wilber OLB/DE

Orie Lemon MLB

Anthony Hitchens (R) MLB

Will Smith (R) OLB

Orie Lemon sticks around for depth and a special teams role. I think Holloman ends up starting in the middle, with the learning curve a little too much for rookie Hitchens. Lee's injury indirectly throws a monkey wrench in the Wilber/Holloman SLB battle. I don't think we can afford to have Durant as an off the bench guy with Carter's struggles, and Holloman's lack of experience.

CB (6):

Brandon Carr

Morris Claiborne

Orlando Scandrick

Sterling Moore CB/FS

BW Webb

Terrance Mitchell (R)

Patmon gets a PS spot. He was a tryout guy, and I don't see him being poached. Mitchell has impressed in minicamp so far. Would like to only have five, but Moore has value at safety, and I don't see them cutting ties with Webb so soon.

S (5):

Barry Church FS

JJ Wilcox SS

Matt Johnson FS

Jeff Heath SS

Ahmad Dixon (R) SS

Matt Johnson is our only shot at a back up with range. Barring injury, Heath should be a special teams player in the vain of McCray. Dixon lucks out as Church will be needed as a nickel LB in some situations.

The three special teams spots are obvious.

This is my first, so I hope this is the appropriate length for a fanpost. I was looking over the possibilities last night and thought this was a very possible scenario without Sean Lee. I'm interested to see how serious they are about going heavy defensive depth with a complete lack of high level players on that unit.

Let me know how wrong I am.
