Are You Smarter than Calvin Watkins Results

Back in Late April and Early May, ESPN Dallas writers (And I use that term loosely because he is considered a hack), Calvin Watkins and Todd Archer did a series of posts on players that the Cowboys could consider when it comes to the NFL Draft. Many of us scoffed at the prospect of Calvin knowing about possible drafted players especially since his selections had something to be desired. Thankfully the results are in, and I am happy to announce that we are all smarter than Calvin.

I am doing this post for Aggie Fan because he has been forgetting to get the post finished, and he failed to enter his own contest. However, we had 10 entries including yours truly and one embarrassed ESPN Dallas writer.

SCORING: I basically kept the scoring intact as far as Aggie Fan devised in the first place. Every pick that is off by one round got two points while every correct pick saw a loss of two points. With that said, we all earned bragging rights and the right to tweet Calvin about how much smarter we are then him.

To wit, here is the link to the fanpost, which includes Calvin's picks and it isn't good because he and Todd restricted themselves to no 1st round picks. But they could have made better selections, and there is the feeling that this was an assignment from higher up. With that said, here are the answers as determined by the 2014 NFL Draft:

Running Backs:
Bishop Sankey (Washington) 2nd Round
Jeremy Hill (LSU) 2nd Round
Lache Seastrunk (Baylor) 6th Round
Charles Sims (West Virginia) 3rd Round
Tim Flanders (Sam Houston State) Undrafted
Silas Redd (USC) Undrafted

Tight Ends:
Jace Amaro (Texas Tech) 2nd Round
C.J. Fiedorowicz (Iowa) 3rd Round
Arthur Lynch (Georgia) 5th Round
Jake Murphy (Utah) Undrafted
A.C. Leonard (Tennessee State) Undrafted
Jordan Najvar (Baylor) Undrafted

Inside Linebackers:
Chris Borland (Wisconsin) 3rd Round
Shayne Skov (Stanford) Undrafted
Yawin Smallwood (Connecticut) 7th Round
Max Bullough (Michigan State) Undrafted
Brock Coyle (Montana) Undrafted
Avery Williamson (Kentucky) 5th Round

Cornerbacks:
Kyle Fuller (Virginia Tech) 1st Round
Bradley Roby (Ohio State) 1st Round
Stan Jean-Baptiste (Nebraska) 2nd Round
Jason Verrett (TCU) 1st Round
Lamarcus Joyner (Florida State) 2nd Round
Pierre Desire (Lindenwood) 4th Round

Defensive Ends:
Dee Ford (Auburn) 1st Round
Chris Smith (Arkansas) 5th Round
Demarcus Lawrence (Boise State) 2nd Round
Kareem Martin (North Carolina) 3rd Round
Jackson Jeffcoat (Texas) Undrafted
Marcus Smith (Louisville) 1st Round

Some major trends with the contest reveal massive trouble with the linebackers. Many of us were so sure of the draftability of Shayne Skov that we had him going in the 3rd round while CowboyNeal had him in the 2nd. But he went undrafted as did Max Bullough, and Brock Coyle. In addition, Jackson Jeffcoat had a late 2nd day and third day grade on him, but he went undrafted as well. Jeffcoat's case is well documented because his non-selection ended a long streak of Texas Longhorns players getting drafted.

Let's put this issue in perspective. The NFL Draft started in 1936 and 1938 was the last draft until 2014 without a Longhorns player. During the streak, the Longhorns had to wait until the 11th round of the 1965 draft for their first pick. Then in 1983, the Longhorns had only two players selected, but had a record 17 selected the following draft in 1984. Finally, all Hendricks Award winners since 2002 were drafted and there was very little reason why Jackson Jeffcoat wouldn't break that streak. Calvin had him in the 6th round while our winner had him in the 3rd.

So, who is our winner?

ginge159 with only 16 points. If you believe him, he used science to make his picks and made positive scores with the Tight ends. Like all of us, he had missed on the Inside Linebackers, but Cornerbacks and Defensive ends redeemed him. Among the other players, it should be noted that nicksmithosu had DeMarcus Lawrence listed as a 1st rounder just like the Cowboys. Finally one minor head of shame for jayrosser27, he scored 66 because he forgot one defensive end. It was Stan Jean-Baptiste and it added 14 points to his score.

Scores

ginge159: 16

CowboyNeal: 28

dabomb1227: 64

With that said, there are only a few more pieces of business. First KD, can you please make sure that ginge159's name is added to the 10 for 10 hall of fame under special events.
