Last season, 2,893 plays were run in the fourth quarter with the offensive team trailing by at least two possessions. A pass was called on 84 percent of those plays. Conversely, 1,816 plays were run in the final frame when the offense was up by two or more possessions. Teams called pass 30 percent of the time on those plays. The above is an extreme example of the importance of considering game situation when evaluating a team’s play-calling.
