The Dallas Cowboys have been looking for their next franchise running back since the days of legendary Emmitt Smith. This team has gone through Troy Hambrick, Eddie George, Julius Jones, Marion Barber, Felix Jones and now DeMarco Murray. Murray unlike the others has proven he can be the feature back but much some of their other young budding stars comes his durability issues.

Murray’s injury history didn’t start in Dallas but during his time at the University of Oklahoma. While a member of the Sooners’ football team, Murray missed two whole seasons before he ever put on the blue and silver. Through his first three seasons, he has yet to complete a full season. Missing three games in 2011, six in 2012 and two more last season, is it time for the Cowboys to look elsewhere?

2014 is the last year on his contract and Jerry Jones has a big decision to make. Do they look to invest in Murray long term or try and find his heir in next year’s draft? Despite missing two games last year, Murray had his best season to date. Averaging 5.2 yards per carry which was above his average and accumulating 1,121 yards on the ground. Murray is also no slouch in the passing game adding another 350 yards. There is no question that he is talented but can Murray make it through a season unscathed.

What is most concerning is about Murray is not only the injuries but where they happen. A majority of them are leg injuries which for a running back the legs are usually the first thing to go. I don’t envy the Jones family with the decision they have to make but for the fan base’s sake let’s hope he doesn’t get a big contract then go down with an injury long-term.
