As teams around the league pare down their rosters to 53 total guys, every front office will take this time to sort through other teams' trash, looking for treasure. The Dallas defense could definitely use a few diamonds in the rough, so let's go prospecting! Here are five guys who didn't make the cut with their previous team, but might just be worth flying in to Arlington for a look-see:
1. Michael Sam, DE, cut by St. Louis
Dallas should definitely put in a waiver claim for Sam. 100%. Sam proved this preseason that he can get to the passer, and the Cowboys have exactly zero of those players right now.
2. Howard Jones, LB, cut by Pittsburgh
Jones is another undrafted rookie that showed very well in the preseason. He's raw, but made splash plays in multiple games. He's a freakish athlete at a position of sore need.
3. Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, cut by Seattle
This is a popular name thrown around for Dallas, and I'm all for it. Dallas has had ample opportunity to give him a shot, however, and has never seemed interested. Given his position and pedigree, I hope they bring him in.
4. Robert Lester, S, cut by Carolina
Lester started four games and played in twelve for the #2 defense in the league last year. Opposing QB's had a 49.6 QB rating when they threw his direction last year. I personally like J.J. Wilcox, but Lester would make a good addition to a position that is by no means set in stone.
5. Max Bullough, ILB, cut by Texans
Bullough rounds out this list of former UDFA's. The former Michigan State Spartan had an impressive preseason with the Texans but didn't make it through the final cut down to 53. Given Dallas' uncertainty at MLB not only this year but going forward, adding a young player with promise at the position (and on the cheap) has to be appealing.
Who'd I miss?
