Why I'm A Fan Of The Dallas Cowboys - Phantom's Story

I was eight years old when I started taking an interest in professional sports. I lived in central California and my fandom originated towards the teams that were mostly shown on television, which in most cases were local teams. But when it came to the NFL, that wasn't the case. Fortunately for me, the San Francisco 49ers had not become great just yet so they weren't on TV very much. But can you guess who was? Thankfully, the love of America's Team had infiltrated the west coast and I was exposed to the Dallas Cowboys almost every Sunday. There were a lot of things that captivated me about the Cowboys - the star on the helmet, the colors of the jersey, the beautiful sight of Texas Stadium, and the calm, cool demeanor of the man in charge. The cheerleaders were also nice on the eyes, but I was too young to fully appreciate that just yet. And the Cowboys quarterback, Roger Staubach, had such a cool sounding name that it seemed like he belonged in the Star Wars movies. Love them or hate them, the Cowboys were always the talk of the town and it was fun to be a part of the scuttlebutt. Of course, I loved them and that love has grown stronger every year.

"The Catch" made me cry

First off, while the great majority of sports fans refer to the 1982 NFC Championship game as "The Catch" game, it will be forever known to me as "The Tackle" as in the game saving horse-collar tackle made on Drew Pearson that would have otherwise rendered "The Catch" non-existent. Sure, Dwight Clark made a great play, but the Cowboys still had time for a comeback of their own. Following that go-ahead touchdown, Danny White hit Pearson on a deep slant on the very first play from scrimmage. Pearson would have been off to the races had it not been for "The Tackle."

That game devastated me. I was so disgusted that I couldn't eat dinner that evening. My mother thought I was ill. She was right. My heart was broken.

I love the blue jerseys

Don't get me wrong, I love the snazzy teal green pants and white jerseys. But I also like a little variety from time to time. Whenever the Cowboys are wearing the blue jerseys, it feels like a treat. I don't believe one bit in a silly curse, and Tex Schramm was a genius in allowing his fans to see other teams dark colors so fans would get to see something different from week to week. I wish more teams would do that.

Speed Round

Barry Switzer - Can't stand him. He was like one of those parents that let their kids run wild all over the grocery store.

Terrell Owens - I'm one of the few fans that love me some TO. He trained hard and helped make several games exciting.

Jessica Simpson - Thought she and Tony made a good couple at the time. Oops.

Antonio Bryant - Didn't care for him, but if anyone wants to unload any of his Cowboys jerseys at a discounted price, look me up.

Eagles/Giants/Redskins - If I notice a car with a bumper sticker of one of those teams, I immediately become susceptible to road rage.
