Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Dallas snatches defeat from the jaws of victory

Seattle 21 - Dallas 20

The Dallas Cowboys gave away a playoff game. They had multiple opportunities to win this game, with the biggest coming on a FG in the last minute from point blank range. But Tony Romo fumbled the snap, was caught from behind before getting the first down or a TD, and the Dallas season was officially dead. But Dallas wasn't content to lose it once, they lost it multiple times. They had a 3rd and 1 at the Seattle 10 in the fourth quarter, and instead of calling a simple QB sneak, they tried to hand it off, and they failed. Instead of a first down inside the 10, and the chance for a huge TD, they had to kick a FG. The defense then did its job and stopped the Seahawks at the 2-yard line on an amazing goal line stand. But in a bizarre play where Terry Glenn fumbled, the ball bounced out of the endzone for a safety.

Three huge plays in the 4th quarter, and Dallas failed on all three. Now they have a long offseason to take a look at what is wrong with this team. Why can't they handle the pressure? Why did they collapse down the stretch run of the season, and why did they collapse in the 4th quarter of the playoff game?

Heart-broken and angry, that's the only way to describe it. The offseason has officially begun and I wasn't prepared for it all. Early in that 4th quarter, I really believed we would win this game. But it wasn't to be, and now we have nothing but questions and anguish. This one was a bitter pill; it might take a while to get over it.

You write really well and capture a lot of what I am feeling.  Gut wrenching.

Although, Romo was down by contact and the ground popped that ball out.  Why didn't they review the spot on that fumble after the snap?  They may have explained it on TV as I turned the TV off.

Was wondering the same thing...
He could have very well made it.

Not a lot of calls went our way anyway.  It's just as well.

my digital
picture shows the ball came down with the point an inch from the yellow line before Romo fumbled. The ball is more than an inch wider at the center so there is a chance the ref gives us a spot but is was not meant to be.

by lee3022 on Jan 6, 2007 10:45 PM CST up reply actions

He used his left hand to prop himself
as he went to ground and then came down on his shoulder right on the yellow line as the ball is also right before the line with his butt still up in the air.

Parcells
Needs a young play caller. I think he is still good as a grand wizard, but he's missing too much.

by King Man on Jan 6, 2007 10:34 PM CST reply actions

I'm a Duke fan.
I have seen my share of overrated players and teams. This team is full of them. Starting with Roy "Game Changer" Williams. Then there's Terrell "Drops" Owens. Throw in Tony "Debutant" Romo. Don't forget Julius "Piles" Jones. Even Bill "Why am I getting consistently outcoached" Parcells. I'm not saying any of these guys are BAD. I'm just saying they're not the superstars that we NEED them to be. They're not the LEADERS we NEED them to be. To some extent, Romo masked that and a lot of us, me included, at the cheese. Now, it's obvious. The team as a whole is overhyped. Our "quality" wins, in retrospect, aren't as great as we thought. I don't want to crunch the numbers, but we aren't as good as our record shows. We have flash, but we don't have substance. We have the names, but we don't have the heart.

by Parl on Jan 6, 2007 10:36 PM CST reply actions

Before the potential field-goal
with a 4th and 1 on the 2 yard line with a minute left, behind by 1... We should've went for the touchdown. Especially since the pass coverage has been horrible for the past month. Even if we would have made the field goal, the Seahawks still had a minute to go down field and kick one for themselves.

In summation: The Cowboys should've went for the TD with 1 minute left rather than the FG.

thats a tough argument to make
the defense played their first good game in a while, its not fair to give romo that much credit

good player, bad game

anyway you cut it, if he didn't screw up the snap we win.

by 325424 on Jan 6, 2007 10:59 PM CST up reply actions

If we made the field goal
There would've been a minute left for the Seahawks to go 30 or so yards to get into field goal range for themselves and end the game. What I'm saying is that if the Cowboys would've went for the touchdown, made it and a 2 point conversion then the Seahawks would've had to marched the length of the field to tie the game in under a minute with no timeouts left. Going for the TD in that situation makes sense... to me atleast.

This game was much better to watch than NO, Philly
This game was much better to watch than NO, Philly or the Lions. They looked like a football team. Not a great one, but at least a professional one.

Romo showed his rookieness. But he also showed he has a future as the Dallas Cowboy QB.

For me, next year looks good for some Cowboy football. Plug the OL and the FS position.

First time in LONG time we actually had a shot at the playoffs.

by Deke on Jan 7, 2007 12:11 PM CST up reply actions

Yes but
the Bears defense isn't even close to resembling the Raven defense of that year. And Dilfer did an okay job on the offense. He wasn't turnover prone like Grossman is.

by Philosopher on Jan 7, 2007 12:36 PM CST up reply actions

The Grossman Haters
Umm...you do realize that Tony Romo was marginally better than Grossman, right? You take away a 5 TD game vs. the Bucs (who aren't even an NFL team) and he has been up and down all season, just like Grossman. They both started hot and then cooled off when defenses paid them a little more attention.

by lopey986 on Jan 7, 2007 6:59 PM CST up reply actions

Well
in all his games, Romo NEVER had a game as bad as Grossman did against the Vikings or against the Packers in that last game. He never had a game with a passer rating of under 10! How many of those did Grossman have this year? Two at least that I know of. It was your QB that was benched at halftime for completing 5 passes in a half, 3 of them to the other team!

If Chicago fans want to defend their Quarterback, more power to them. He's their quarterback.

P.S. Your dissing the Bucs when they came very close to beating you in your stadium? LOL!

by Philosopher on Jan 7, 2007 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

you're on drugs
Romo was clearly much better than Grossman. I don't ever remember at any point fans saying he should be benched for poor play.
In Romo we Trust

The Ravens had Jamal Lewis behind Dilfer
I don't think the Bears have anything close to that kind of running game.
And I would rate Dilfer as better than Grossman, at least you knew what to expect from Dilfer.

college -- not nfl
In college the play is dead once things like knee or ball hits the ground.  In the NFL, play is only dead when a defender stops you (on the ground they have to touch you indicating they could have hit you).  That's why you sometimes see WRs dive for a catch, then get up and continue running.

I thought we'd get a touchback since a Seattle player was the last to touch the ball in the end zone. But, I think it's based on possession.

The biggest problem is we Have the best
receiver in football and we don't use him.  We should make plays centered around him and we just try to force him in our system.

This is on the coaches for not using our best offensive weapon.  T.O. will have a right to complain after the game

by Parl on Jan 6, 2007 10:54 PM CST up reply actions

the Glenn play
That's not correct. The call on the Glenn fumble was right - his knee was never down, he had possession, and the fumble was caused when he tried to move forward after securing the ball.

As comforting as it'd be to be able to blame the refs for this loss, I don't think we can. The Newman call was correct, took - he'd hooked the receiver's arm. And they probably made the right call on Witten - it didn't LOOK like he made the one yard line. My quibble there is whether or not the evidence was conclusive. If the ref was looking at the same replay we saw on tv, that view was from a slight angle, which makes it harder to judge where the ball actually was. I'm not saying it was a wrong call - just that I didn't see conclusive evidence. But it was probably right.

And damn...god, I hate to say this but fumbling the snap on that FG just can't happen. A game's worth of plays equal the outcome, not one. But Tony's got to get that ball down. This has got to be the most gut-wrenching loss I've ever seen.

I do, however, think Romo's the guy as our QB going forward. It was an unbelievable gaffe to mishandle that snap - but it doesn't reflect on his play as a QB.

am not saying the refs lost the game however I am saying they made an error on a call that would have totally changed the result of the game(hell it might have been worse). I am sure that no matter my team would have still crushed my heart no matter, it was destiny. But that call was wrong im my opinion.

by jbratch on Jan 6, 2007 11:18 PM CST up reply actions

down by contact
"Ball hits the ground it is down."

No -- the player needs to be down by contact.  The player has to be touched by a defender either initiating the fall, or while he's down.  Over the holidays there was a M. Jones-Drew play (v Patriots) that really showed this.  He ran into his line, fell down (about 2 yrds behind LOS), got up, and ran 74 yrds for a TD. He was only touched by his own players before falling, and wasn't touched until after he got up by the defenders.

In college, the rules are quite different-- the play is dead as soon as the player/ball is down.

by mlibbey on Jan 7, 2007 10:35 AM CST up reply actions

Romo has had a bad month
and his hold cost us the game, but there is times he shows alot of promise. He's got to start games better and he's got to settle in the pocket, he has got a serious case of happy feet in there.

if you have a chance, watch Brady tomorrow and how he sets up in the pocket, Romo should be watching him.

Roy Williams allowed two Td's again in a game, but what else is new. He is so average and is a complete liabilty out there.

Unearned Points...
  1. He wasn't touched...so he wasn't down by contact.  The ball is live unless they rule it an imcompletion.
  2. Regardless, he picked it up on his own and tried to run with it...an incomplete pass call was our only hope.

At least Romo admits it, even if the homers don't:
"I cost the Dallas Cowboys a playoff game. That will be with me a long time." Tonight, Romo played like a career backup. You can't argue that. Luckily, our D and special teams kept us in the game and gave us a shot at the end. But Romo messed up his backup duties. Somewhat ironic really.

If the Cowboys were a Used Car
I'm not so sure I'm buying 'As Is'

Too many dings and dents on the O-line. The Defense doesn't make for very trustworth brakes. What about the Wheels in TO,Jones,Witten and Glenn? Are their better spares in the trunk or do you buy a couple new ones now and hope the other two hold up a while?

What about the motor? Is Romo the engine that'll do more than just get you around or will it break your heart, leaving you on the side of the road one day with nothing to show for than a rusty paintjob and few bald tires?  The shiniest new engines might race down the stretch only to vapor lock at the finish.

Romo probably had all the possible bad things that could happen running through his head as that snap reached his hands - then he saw them actually happen. Tonight Romo threw a rod on a routine play. Maybe we still lose the game regardless of that FG but clutch players make clutch plays.

Next Year right? Why not, we've waited this long. Let's just hope this car only needs a few parts and tune-up.

A. His girlfriend dumped a potential starting QB for the Cowboys

B. Simpson decides she wants nothing to do with him after he schmoozes her dad with tickets.

Throw a pass from the 2 line to a Parcell's trusted guy...Terry Glenn...and he fumbles, no one even mentions that it might not have been a catch in the first place as the ball moved in his hands when it hit the ground!  Up by 7...how about 3 QB sneaks and a punt...its obvious McBriar is our best player...and when we get beat deep again to tie the game at least we get to try to run one back.  How do you give up a safety and a touchdown in less than 2 minutes when you are up by 7?????????????  I want to hurl!

Also, no one mentioned...NO SACKS!!!! NO SACKS!!! We just let the QB stand back there all day...three man rush and drop into coverage and STILL GET BEAT DEEP!

I was surprised the annoucers didn't even talk about it really...I wasn't sure he ever had control of the ball even though he tried to move forward.  Just a bad play call regardless if you ask me...too much can go wrong.  Witten and Crayton seemed to be open all night...if your going to throw (which I didn't like at all).

Forward Lateral No-Call
On the play where Glenn fumbles at our own 2-yd line, Seattle LB-Lofa Tatupu should have been called for a forward lateral.

The refs and the announcers missed that.

think you need posession for that
'Tatupu should have been called for a forward lateral'

I think you need possession to do a lateral. If he had possession in the end zone, the play is over and its a TD.  During the game I thought it would be a touchback for similar reasons (seattle being the last team to touch the ball, but I think its similar -- its the last team to have possession.

True, you would need possession, but...
it wouldn't have been a TD because the forward lateral would've made it illegal... and a penalty.

Seattle Game
Just sickening, and yet did you expect anything different considering the last month. Make that 4 out of 5 sloppie games.

Stats don't win games but if you checked them it would give you a different picture. Except for penalties.

Why are we still playing around with Roy Williams, that's all he's got folks, he's at the peak of his career now. It's not going toget better, only worse. Cut Him. Take the salary cap
hit.

Romo's Bobble was big, but Roy's to 14 points to the tightend was the gamekiller. Romo just had the last say, but this game was lost by the secondary.

Who called that insert cuss word here beginswith S and ends with Y play on our own goal line where Glenn fumbled for a safety. I could go on for an hour about that insert cuss worg here that begins with F.   UP.

Forgot...
Wanted to give props to Bobby Carpenter...he played his best game as a Cowboy in the biggest game, wish I could say that for more of our players.  Good job Bobby!!

Carpenter
Really excited about him next year. Get him in the weight room, with a season behind him now and some experience, he will be a beast next year.

Roy Blows
We did see some players bring it tonight.

Bradie Akin Canty Ware Julius Austin Henry

Not enough to offset the skunk in the wood pile

               ROY WILLIAMS.

Pro Bowl here he comes.  Being a cover boy for EA Sports doesn't make him a playmaker. You video game junkies take some of the blame for his over hype. The guy SUCKS BIGTIME

Passing game...
We all have to be extremely disappointed in our ability to move the ball through the air with them having castoffs (Pete Hunter) from the couch on the field.  Julius Jones showed some heart tonight finally!

How about the Witten fumble!!...no way he should fumble that ball on a big third down catch....we could have set the tone with an early score, instead he gave their D some confidence.  He got hit pretty good in the back...but thats what happens to tight ends...he should be ready for that!

The majority of the team plays to not make mistakes...instead of playing to make plays.

i still do not agree with the glenn call
I am beating a dead horse but if the ball touches the ground it is down. I do not care if you try to run after or not down by contact or not if it hits the ground it is down. It does not matter where his feet were the ball touched the ground.....DOWN. Incomplete, Maybe. Completion it was still down where the ball hit the ground. Maybe I am wrong!!!

by jbratch on Jan 6, 2007 11:54 PM CST reply actions

The ground doesn't finish the play...
if he caught it, he could touch the ball to the ground as much as he wanted, until a Seahawk player touched him down.

This is why if someone catches the ball and rolls on the ground after the catch, they can get up and run after the catch if they were never touched by the other team.

by Marked Hoosier on Jan 7, 2007 12:13 AM CST up reply actions

How then
can the ground not cause a fumble? A guy hitting the ground with the ball in his hands is totally different than the ball hitting the ground.

Ok you are just nuts...
I try to explain the play you asked about, and you go off on a tangent...

how bout you just realize that the refs know more than you do, ok?

by Marked Hoosier on Jan 7, 2007 2:01 AM CST up reply actions

I like Parcells
I think he is the reason we have so much talent on this team, but some one who is so stubborn not to use our best playmaker effectively, T.O., is better off not coming back.  Parcells was probably the best choice to rebuild our team but now we need someone else who is more innovative to coach the team.

Also I have defended Roy in the past.  But he is really not worth keeping.  We need a safety who has got some decent speed and can cover.  He really is a better fit as a LB  in a 4-3.  He is a good football player he just doesnt fit into our system and is not worth the money we pay him.

I'll amend the previous statement
go back to 4-3, Carpenter and Ayodele at OLB, Roy dub at MLB, D-Ware and Hatcher/Ellis at the ends and Canty and Ferguson at DT.  Draft a SS and trade Bradie James.

hmmm
i am back on forth on roy.

i really understand your frustration.  Still, he is a guy who makes a lot of game changing plays.

my question with roy is this -- how can the pats lose the best cb in the game and play in a superbowl with street free agents at cb, how can the seahawks manage to contain to and glenn with pete hunter and our coaches cant scheme so that newman, henry, glenn, and watkins can compensate for williams??

by 325424 on Jan 7, 2007 12:01 AM CST up reply actions

Apparently not
Probably because we also have to compensate for Bradie James.  And on that Stevens play James and Roy both screwed up.  But I think Roy can still be useful to us look above.

Bears Fan Here
A fan of Tony Romo calling anything else overrated? That is absurd.

by lopey986 on Jan 7, 2007 12:52 AM CST reply actions

My thoughts on the game
First of all, the Bears are overated.  The Eagles will prove that next week.

But about the Cowboys.  I for one am starting to look at tonights loss as a good thing.  A loss like that can galvanize a team for the next season.  That image of Romo on the carpet speaks volumes.  If I were him, I'd hang that photo on my wall by my front door -- that way, every time I went outside, I'd be reminded of how it felt to lose like that.

But I have to take some fault for the Cowboys losing tonight.  And I am ashamed of my behaviour.

Really?
The Eagles are going to prove this? How...by playing in New Orleans against a team who isn't the Chicago Bears?

That will really show those Bears!!!

by lopey986 on Jan 7, 2007 6:56 PM CST up reply actions

New Thoughts.
After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, I have decided that this loss cannot be blamed on Tony Romo.  This loss isn't Bill Parcells fault.  Not even Roy Williams is responsible for this.

So who's the goat?

Mike Vanderjagt.

Here are the facts.

If you look at the replay, Gramatica valiantly tried to black Babineaux, but failed miserably.

Here are some numbers for thought:

  1.  Martin Gramatica 5'8, 170 (soaking wet)
  2.  Jordan Babineaux 6'0, 200
  3.  Mike Vanderjagt 6'5, 218
THUS, if Vanderjagt hadn't been so bad as to force Parcells to cut him, he would have been taking that field goal and he would've blocked Babineaux with his big body, thus letting Romo get the go ahead TD.

THANKS A LOT FOR NOTHING VANDERSHANK, YOU FAIL AGAIN!

wow...
that analysis is very close to insanity.  Just so you know...

by Marked Hoosier on Jan 7, 2007 1:57 AM CST up reply actions

If it wasn't for Romo
there wouldn't even be a playoff game. This kid is our future whether you like it or not. Bashing him isn't going to help the pain of this loss.

We'll be better next year, thats for sure. The team played with a lot of heart which told me everything i needed to know.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Jan 7, 2007 2:37 AM CST reply actions

I agree
I hope that Tony can get this in his rear view very fast, this was not his fault, in fact this game was pretty well played, the boys all seemed to put their hearts and souls into this one, but it just seemed to be their fate since so many tiny things went against them, including balls being just short by inches, i can't remember the last time Whitten made 2 mistakes in a ballgame, the guy is darn near perfection every time he touches the ball, but he fumbles for the first time in 2 years, then he makes his turn inches IN FRONT of the first down, rather than behind it, and Terry Glynn fumbles for a safety, then there were the T.O. drops and also the fact that T.O. and the other skills players did not get enough balls thrown to them, what could go wrong did., and none of that was Tony's fault., I believe that a large part of the downfall this season has been in the coaching staff, especially with offensive play calling, not so much the players (other than the defensive secondary and maybe one of 2 offensive linemen) the main problem is they did not make ajustments in the offensive play calling.

in the long run I hope that Romo can shake this off and get ready for what I think will be a much better 2007 if a few changes are made.

Tony should know this loss was not his fault and his team mates should tell him this, he needs to get his head straight before next season.
