Which would you rather do?
Since it’s the silly season let’s have a little fun. We’ll play a game of "Which rumor do you like best?" Below is a poll of the five "most-likely" rumors I’ve heard about involving the Cowboys and trades. Granted, some are more likely than others. If you believe the smoke=fire philosophy, the Pacman rumor seems to be the most likely one to happen. Even Nick Eatman says why not take a chance on the embattled corner. But for the purpose of this exercise, I’m polling you on which rumor you’d rather have happen, not the most likely. Of the five possible scenarios below, which one would you rather the Cowboys make a reality? I’ve taken the liberty of giving some loose parameters about what it might cost to do the deals and tried to look up some contract numbers. Of course, the Cowboys might be able to pull off more than one of these possibilities, but for this poll, say they can only do one. Which one makes your heart flutter?
Here we go:
Pacman Jones: Let’s set the trade compensation at a 4th-round pick in this year’s draft. Pacman is due $1.25 million in base salary this year, but any trade would likely involve a renegotiation on an incentive-laden contract. So say Pacman agrees to a contract that protects the Cowboys in the case of bad behavior.
Chad Johnson: In the case of Chad, and the other two high-profile receivers listed below, I’m assuming it would take a 1st-round pick. Our 2nd-round pick is pretty far back (#61) and the talent-level for these guys is pretty high. Any team looking to trade with us is going to see those two 1st-round picks and want one of them. For this exercise, let’s assume it will take our #28 pick. Chad’s current contract is for $3 million (for 2008), $4.5 million (2009), $5 million (2010) and $6 million (2011). Now Chad has said it’s not about money, but I don’t believe it. So we’ll say we have to renegotiate a contract that puts him at the top-tier of WR’s. Larry Fitzgerald just got $10 million a year, but we’ll assume Chad will sign for something less because he really wants out of Cincy.
Roy Williams: Again, it will take our #28 pick. Roy is due $3.7245 million in base pay for 2008. But he is a free agent after 2008 so the Cowboys would have to negotiate a new contract because there’s no way we trade a 1st-round pick for a player who we’d only have for one year. So expect a renegotiation that pays Roy big money. This means the Cowboys would have to restructure some of their own contracts and/or cut some players to create cap space. Roy wants to be back in Texas so he doesn't demand Fitzgerald-type money, but something that pays him very well.
Anquan Boldin: The Cowboys give up their #28 pick. Boldin is scheduled to make $2.5 million in base salary this season, $2.75 million in base salary in 2009 and $3 million in base salary in 2010. But assume that Boldin is getting out of Arizona because he is underpaid compared to what Fitzgerald just got. So the Cowboys need to renegotiate a deal that puts him more towards the upper-echelon. Again, this would cause Dallas to restructure some contracts or make some cuts to accommodate Boldin.
Darren McFadden: The Cowboys trade both 1st-round picks and possibly some players/later-round picks to jump up into the top five to get McFadden. Besides the picks, the Cowboys rookie-payment structure would jump up immensely and we’d probably have to clear some cap space to get this done. Although if we traded some players in the deal it could help.
These are just rough parameters and something I’m throwing out there to give some context to the possible trades. Don’t get too hung up on that part of it, just assume Dallas will have to make some sacrifices to get most of these done (except the Pacman deal).
Given all that, which deal would you most like to see Dallas do? Vote in the poll and tell us your thoughts in the comments.

I vote for none of the above
I'd rather invest our money in draft picks and our own players.

Man...
I'd love nothing more than to have Ocho in Big D wearing the star but it just doesn't seem like it's possible. My vote is for the Pac. He'll come at a good price and help solidify 2 of our most dire needs at corner and return man. Just don't be a jackass Pac!

Pacman is the way to go
Our secondary needs help and he can provide that without giving up any first round picks.
On another note, any idea when BTB will be upgraded to sportsnation 2.0? I'm a frequent visitor to Lonestarball and the new layout/features are pretty sweet!

It should happen within the next month or so
I don't yet have an exact schedule, SB Nation is moving all the baseball blogs first, then I think it will be the NFL blogs. I wish I could tell you something more exact but I just don't know right now.
But I agree, the new layout and features are going to be awesome.

I like the Pacman idea.
I think its the most realistic and feasible to happen. The cowboys would get someone who can start right away at two different positions that the cowboys need help at. It wouldnt cost alot of money to sign him because any chance is better then no chance. Plus the cowboys would lose a second day pick and can focus the two first rounders on WR/RB/? whatever. They could even feel better about trading out of the draft kind of like last year. IDK im not expert just my two cents haha.

no to Roy Williams
With our current salary cap situation we would be hard pressed to resign him after next season. Chad Johnson would be better because he is locked up long term.

None
I'm like Terry in that I would prefer none of these rumors to come true. However, if I have to pick one, I'm going with Pacman. He has the lowest cost but the most upside. It doesn't make sense to release players to make room for a wide receiver right now.
Maybe if we traded an under performing former first round pick (or two) we could afford another high priced WR and get something back. Of course trading causes a cap escalation and so the 'boys capologists would have to do some creative things just to make it work if it could work at all (and I'm skeptical about that).
Either Pac comes here or nothing happens. I just don't see any other reasonable scenario. It's fun to speculate, though.

Pacman
He's the only one that addresses our biggest need, which is CB. WR isn't a pressing need this year, and while it may be next year, what's the rush? If Roy Williams really wants to be a Cowboy, let's worry about signing him then as a free agent once we've renegotiated Romo's deal and figured out what is going to happen with Canty, Barber, Newman, TO, etc etc. If Jerry can perform the cap acrobatics required to bring in one of these WRs, then fine, but I'm not creative enough to see how it's done without hurting the team overall. As for McFadden, no thanks for that price. The WRs would cost the same in salary and less in draft picks, and all things considered, I'd rather have MB3 and CJ/RW/AB than DMac.

Holy cow!
How could the top two vote getters not be Roy Williams and Anquan Boldin ???
Seems to me that people are just picking Pacman because the story has been bashing them in the head for like a week now.
Two young non trouble making super star WR's who can play at a high level for at least the next five years are on the board and yet a trouble making, may not even be playing come September because of suspension young CB is winning the vote right now.
This reminds me of Britney Spears. Because TMZ follows her around every one wants to talk about her. Yet there are other talented artists out there like Christina Aguilera who actually have talent and she gets only half the publicity.
That's America, all about quantity and less about quality.
by DCFanatic on Mar 24, 2008 11:30 AM CDT 0 recs
Exactly
I went with Boldin because of Roy's injury issues, but both of these players could be our long-term #1 WR. CJ is great, but I don't see him leaving Cincinnati this year.
As far as Pacman goes, I would definitely take him, but it definitely isn't what I want most.
We need a RB, 2 CBs and a WR THIS year, and WR is the weakest position of the 3 this year so trading for one makes more sense.

WR is our weakest position ????????? huh ????????
what roster have you been looking at ?
the fact that we NEED TWO CB's and TWO RB's , puts WR a distant last in order of priority...
then to top it off.....any of those WR's will be commanding 9 million/per contracts....then you got TO in his last year of a contract....I don't think so...
As much as I'd love anyone of those WR's....don't think signing them will come without major pitfalls, in cap space, roster spots, and possible grumblings for more balls thrown around.
Sign Roy Williams next spring free agent signing period...

I think PACMAN is the number 1
choice because of low risk high reward kind of thing. I mean a 5th round pick and low salary vs losing higher picks and gaining even high salary.

I agree Terry
It's the money issue. If your team is loaded with talent already, it's hard to see how cutting good players to make room for a top salaried WR would benefit Dallas in the long run.
That being said, I picked Boldin since this is kind of for fantasy anyway. I don't want to trade up to the top 5 for DMac, nor do I really want Pacman on the team. I don't think Chad Johnson would be a good fit plus he'd cost the most of the WR's.
That leaves Roy Williams and Boldin, and if the salaries are equal, I'll take Boldin because he's proven he can be a #1 WR already and Roy W. hasn't due to his inability to stay healthy.

I like both Boldin and RW
But it's not like Boldin has been healthy every year either. He's only played in 16 games in 2 of his 5 seasons so far. Willisams has one so in 1 out of his 4 seasons.
Neither of them are that durable, but I'd certainly take either if we can do so without hemmoraghing players next year for salary cap reasons (and I don't see how that is possible). Boldin could work if he'll play out his contract, but the chances of that don't seem so strong if he gets traded.

I said Roy
It is a tough choice between Williams and Boldin, but i think i would take Williams. He would be a good compliment to T.O., he would not cost us an arm and a leg, and he is not a 'risk'. He is a solid proven player.

exactly
and Roy has said that he wants to come back to Texas. I think he'd be willing to sign a nice cap-accomadating contract should he come to Big D

PacMan too unreliable for me
Just my worthless opinion here, but with Mr Wocka-Wocka's EXTENSIVE track - err criminal - record... how could any head coach/teammates trust this talented player to stay out of trouble?
I understand the minimal cost issue, but how do we not know one of this year's first round corners aren't gonna turn out special?
Before somebody digs up research showing how many late first round corners ended up being minimum-impact CBs in the NFL, also look up how many MULTIPLE-OFFENDER players ended up letting down their respective teams.
With Tank - legal problems and all - you had his head coach and teammates going to bat for him.
With TO - there were no off-the-field criminal issues...
With PacMan - sooooo many law-breaking charges to form an impressive anti-resume.
That's right, let's say we're 6-2 at the halfway point of the season, and the Rain Man decides to go stir up some thunderclouds at a local strip club and commit a crime, per se.
BAM!
Headline News. Adam Jones in the slammer. We've lost a valuable corner and return man. Our defense weakens against the pass. Our chances of winning it all lessen. And a boatload of fans and a roster full of teammates and coaches are let down.
PacMan would be the ultimate tease.
And for da King... it would be the most dangerous personnel move he'd have made in a very long time.
No thanks.
by kcbrett5 on Mar 24, 2008 12:27 PM CDT 0 recs
Pacman is the most likely to happen.
I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole!!!
Jerry is always willing to take a gamble on questionable character players, but when you trade for Pacman, you'll be playing russian roulette with five bullets in the cylinder... the guy just doesn't get it, this wont be his second chance, this will be his tenth..
Personally, I would wait and see how the draft plays out and if there isn't a couple of players there that the cowboys covet at 22, mainly a top cover corner or one of the three elite running backs, trade down a few spots or place a call to detroit to see the availability of Roy williams, atleast you'll be getting a receiver that has developed and wants out of detroit if Philly hasn't beat you to it at when they're on the board at 19.
I wouldn't draft a receiver in the first round of this draft, I like desean Jackson but I worry about his smallish size and we can get caldwell or a dexter Jackson later.

I voted for Boldin
Of the fantasy options mentioned, CB is the biggest need I would try to fill first, then I would prefer to get a WR, and lastly an RB. I passed on Pac-Man because even though it's a low risk / high reward scenario, he hasn't shown any ability to stay out of trouble and a single incident could see him out of football for another year or more. I passed on McFadden because it's a lot to give up for an unproven player. I passed on Chad Johnson because he's getting up there in age (30ish?), he seems selfish, and I think we only want one headcase at receiver on the team. I passed on Roy Williams because word from Detroit is that he was lazy and Martz was exasperated with what he had to do to get him going. I don't see our current group of coaches getting the most from a player like that.
That leaves me with Anquan Boldin. The downsides are that we'd have to pay him a big contract, he has a bit of an injury history (missed 7 games the past 3 seasons), and I don't believe he's an explosive downfield threat. But on the plus side, he's consistent, supposedly a good blocker, young (will turn 28 during the season), a 2-time Pro Bowler, and not a head case. I'd say that's more than a fair price for a late first round pick and would give us a nice move-the-chains option to TO and Witten's ability to get up the field, would let us put Crayton in the slot, and gives us good blocking on the outside (Chad Johnson on his blocking skill: "It sucks, I'm not going to lie to you.")
Would you really take an unknown player at 28 knowing you don't have a great chance to hit the jackpot but can take a receiver who's ready to step in and get you 1100 yards (his career avg.)? I'm going to dream about this fantasy, please don't wake me up unless it comes true.
by Jamie on Mar 24, 2008 2:02 PM CDT 0 recs
I voted for Boldin too
But, if we can afford both Pacman and Boldin, that'd be the bomb... I like Boldin over the other receivers.....

Easy Choice - Trade for Jones
This seems like a no brainer to me - each case other than trading for Pacman Jones requires trading away a 1st round pick (or combination of 1st round picks and players). Trading for Jones does not require trading a first day pick, does not require any signing bonus money, and would not require a large cap hit (assuming a reasonable incentive-laden contract was drafted up).
All of the other scenarios require paying a huge signing bonus to a wide receiver - after giving multimillion dollar bonuses to Crayton and Glenn in the past two years. It does not seem possible to me that another top flight receiver can fit under the cap without completely undermining the talent base that is already in place (making a bunch of cuts).
It would be difficult enough to add the contracts of 2 more first rounders under the cap, but that sure will leave a more feasible cap scenario next offseason when more money will need to be freed up to re-sign some good players (Newman, Ware, Owens, Hamlin, Columbo, Barber, Canty). I suspect that a trade down might occur with the 2nd pick (No. 28).
As much as I would love to see a WR like Boldin, Johnson or Williams added, I would hate to see it cost more down the line (remember Joey Galloway when discussing paying a ransom in both picks and cash).
As far as the notion of being a good citizen to play for a team, I've always been a fan of the name on the front of the uniform, not necessarily the name on the back of it - give the guy a chance, then get rid of him if he screws up. Trading for a reinstated Jones allows for more flexibility on draft day to move around and get the best value for the picks. We all remember how many Cowboys have been in trouble over the years, both during their playing days as well as after they were through...
by CowboysFanJoe on Mar 24, 2008 3:10 PM CDT 0 recs
problem is he won't be reinstated until July
so we would actually be trading for a suspended player hoping he would be reinstated. I know Jones' agent wants to push Goodell for an earlier reinstatment, but that won't happen as Goodell isn't going to be pushed around by an agent.
So you're essentially giving up a 5th or 6th rd pick for a player who might not play next season. Seems like a waste to me.
OBW, it wouldn't be giving PacMan a chance, it would be his 7th chance, at least in the NFL. If you're counting college, try his 12th chance. With some guys, you come to a point where you just have to lock them up and throw away the key if you know what I mean.

Could be a waste
But for a 5th rounder, it's worth the roll of the dice. Gooddell can't keep him suspended forever unless he commits another crime (entirely possible), especially since he's already treated him much more harshly (fair or not) than anyone else.
One thing is for sure: it will be giving Pacman his final chance to have a NFL career.

c' mon guys...we'll still be drafting the best CB
who cares if he screws up and gets banned forever...I don't think he will...but either way...We still will be relying on our first round rookie CB anyways...Adams Jones would just be an added bonus for the lousy cost of a 4th-6th ropund pick....THIS IS A COMPLETE NO BRAINER...If Adam Jones turns choir boy...we'll have the best defense in the league...if he fails...we'll still have our drafted rookie...like nothing happened....so what seems to be the problem here ?????????
I say we trade for PacMan...and trade both our #1's or one this year and next year's...to get DRC....that covers everything...gives us the TWO CB's that we need.
we do not NEED a WR...especially a top 10 WR...which all three of those guys are...maybe not Roy Williams......but we can wait and sign him next spring without giving up anything.....

I disagree boyz
I don't see that scenario playing out at all. If PacMan is signed and reinstated, he automatically becomes our 2nd best CB over any 1st rd CB we draft. That 1st rd CB will not see the field as much unless one of the CBs gets hurt because Newman, Henry and Jones would get most of the playing time. Jones also becomes our best punt returner.
So now you have the scenario where Jones is taking the majority of playing time from our CB rookie and all the punt returns. Right before playoffs, he gets busted again and Goodell suspends him for the remainder of the year (actually would probably be a lifetime ban).
So now we're heading into our first playoff game having to throw our first rd rookie CB into our nickel with not that much PT and Crayton back in at returning punts. You don't see that as a problem?? I see it that as a major problem!
I don't like the fact that Jones would be taking away value playing experience from a rookie when there is a great chance Pacman will end up suspended at some point this season and that rookie who shouldn't really be a rookie by the end of the season when it really matters, is now, really a rookie because lack of playing time.
