WSJ on PFF
In 2009, the site came to the attention of the Giants' Mr. Berger, an executive of the team since the early 1980s. As director of information, Mr. Berger is the team's official wonk, entering every play by every NFL team into a database in search of trends and tendencies that might be useful for Giants coaches.
It was while "messing around on Google" that Mr. Berger came across Pro Football Focus, and one statistic in particular struck him: player participation. The site listed the number of times each player in the NFL participated in a play during a game. That is a statistic the NFL tracks and releases only to teams—never to the public.
Doubtful about the accuracy of Mr. Hornsby's data, Mr. Berger checked it against the NFL data set and found Pro Football Focus was nearly perfect. Impressed, Mr. Berger sent Mr. Hornsby a congratulatory note.
this sounds cool until you actually think about it.
He was impressed that PFF was able to keep track of whether a player was on the field or not? Really.
C'mon football. Step into the present. Google's got a car that drives itself. If you're tracking whether a player is on the field I would expect very high accuracy.
To be clear, I'm not knocking PFF. I'm knocking the low expectations of NFL front offices.
Not Cowboys-related, but worth checking out.
Interesting article about a member of Patriots staff. This is the sort of person I only see in movies.
iPhone App
Man, maybe I just have an old phone (3GS), but the app does not work on my phone. Maybe every 4th time, if I wait long enough, it will load. I added BTB to my home screen and access it that way. Works fine, but the app, when it works, is much easier to read comments, etc.
Anyone else have any information? The app store feedback section is weak, to say the least.
More Thursday Night Games
I'm not sure how I feel about this. I love football but I don't want this to get too out of control.
I like having football on Sundays...with one monday night game.
===================
The NFL is increasing the number of Thursday night games so more of its teams can play in prime time.
Commissioner Roger Goodell said that there will be Thursday night games on the NFL Network from the second to the 15th week of the season, giving all of the league's teams a chance to appear in prime time on some outlet.
Those games will be in addition to the usual Sunday night and Monday night games, which tend to feature teams coming off good seasons.
O-Line Calls
Something to consider while rebuilding the O-Line... I remember a knock on Gurode was that he couldn't make the line calls so Kosier was making all the adjustments. I don't know if Costa did it this past year or if Kosier kept that responsibility. This makes me lean towards acquiring a veteran C rather than drafting someone like Konz. Yeah?
Draft Positions Success Rate by Position and Round Selected
With draft time near and all the draft talk and mock drafting going on, I thought this article, although a little dated (2006), would be very resourceful. The author talks about the success rate of draft picks and breaks it down by position and draft round. Have to admit, although I like the idea of DeCastro at 14, I think we should address D-line or DB with the 1st pick more so now after reading this. Hope you guys find it as informative as I have.
Harvey Martin versus Charles Haley
Harvey Martin versus Charles Haley
I saw an article that says Charles Haley ought to be in the HOF
I would not disagree.
But Harvey Martin was the better player and he is not in the HOF.
He ought to get in first
The Cowboys and the Red Zone woes
Clearly this was a problem for the Boys.Adding the fact that L. Robinson scored 7 of the 11 Tds there.Sure we should be able to get more rushing TDs next year.Better O line play is also an answer. If we had another TE,onelike the Pats have, that would also improve our scoreing down there.Another thing is we got lots of penalties which cost us opportunties to go for a TD instead of a FG.I know everyone says our D must improve but if we fix this RZ problem we should have been 10 - 6 and maybe it's us not the Giants in the Super Bowl. The Cowboys' red zone touchdown efficiency dropped from 59.6 percent in 2010 (ranked 9th) to 49.0 percent in 2011 (ranked 20th). What changed? Well, the Cowboys only had five rushing touchdowns this season -- the lowest total in franchise history -- including only four from running backs. It's much harder to throw inside the 20 because teams can zone you and keep the ball in front of them
2012 Compensatory pick projections
Projecting one compensatory pick for the Cowboys, a 4th rounder for losing Stephen Bowen.
