Parcells press conference 10/9/06

No serious injuries.

Last night was a testament to the fact you can't do certain things and win. We gave up three big plays on defense that basically made their 3 TD's, we had a special teams turnover and two offensive turnovers. We ran more plays, had more running yards, we had a chance to tie the game at the end, but the play was covered and we threw an INT. I've looked at the game carefully on film.

The INT at the end was covered. It's a play we always run, and there was no place to go with the ball, we should've thrown it away. It's not an option route, Witten ran the route and it was covered. Terry might've opened up if we held the ball but it was a longshot.

A lot of the pressure we got was due to some mental errors on protection. They've run the same blitzes for year years and we had prepared for it. We had communication problems and several mental errors where the guy just ran through and tackled the QB and the inside player on the rush should never be allowed to do that.

Bledsoe was under duress last night, the easy sacks were the result of mental errors.

Gurode was solid, it wasn't bad calls from him. It was recognition problems.

At this moment I'm not thinking about changing QB's. I don't think changing QB's is the answer right this minute.

We had a lot of good things that were offset by more than 1 or 2 negative plays. A lot of the things that were doing weren't a factor because we gave plays away.

The LJ Smith pass wasn't Roy Williams fault. (ed note - I guess I got that one wrong, but he didn't say whose fault it was).

I don't know anything about T.O.'s comments after the game. We had trouble getting him involved early; they took him out of the game. They had two guys on him pretty regularly. I didn't notice him chirping on the sidelines.

I think there are some things he's still trying to gain an understanding of in our offense in respect to the routes. I don't comment on player's efforts, I won't talk about that stuff here.

Watkins needs to get it going. We have an exemption for Coleman coming back this week. I'm hopeful he will come in and help. Don't know about starting Keith Davis yet. Watkins had a few more mistakes than I would've expected last night. He has a tendency to not to see the ball in the air and jump the receivers first move. You have to see the ball thrown first.

We should have been in good shape on the flea-flicker but we didn't make the play. We weren't really fooled.

There's 12 weeks to go, we can't dwell on this. The team we're playing this week had two weeks to prepare for us. They are coming off a win.

I think we can protect Drew. We had some communication problems last night.

There was one guy who didn't block on the empty sets, it's a recognition problem, everybody blocked but one person.

2 of Drew's sacks were from coverage, he could've thrown the ball away, but we turned guys loose 3 or 4 times giving him no shot. On film you see a guy coming full-speed and Bledsoe's not even finished his drop yet, he can't even get in his stance. His arm was hit on the first INT.

We did have one play where we could have elected to run JJ at the end or audible to a pass, but you risk the clock expiring if you run it. If you run on 2nd down then you have to clock it on 3rd down.

We talked about celebration penalties in camp, I talked to him about that. I didn't see it and it wasn't on the film. But the second guy that comes in to celebrate, they will call that.

Last night it was one player on defense. That's unfortunate.

We had a couple of problems on the offensive line. 2 or 3 guys played pretty strong last night. Those things we did last night were a surprise. We had a lot of mental mistakes and it has nothing to do with the complexity of the blitzes. The majority of problems were centered on the offensive line. We had a back make a couple of mistakes, also.

The environment had nothing to do with it, you're looking right at the guys, they are right in front of you. They only have 11 guys on the field.

It centered around 1 or 2 guys on the line, it was the same problem over and over.

We have to make protecting the football our number 1 priority. We're scoring points, we're running, moving the ball, converting 3rd downs. We won't be any good until we protect the ball.

The turnovers and big plays are what mean something, not the stats. We gave up big plays, gave it up on our own 12-yard line. They were only 2 for 12 on 3rd down conversions.

Kicking situation not clear yet. Suisham didn't do what we hoped last night.

Carpenter worked outside and inside this week. I needed him in both spots.

Julius ran pretty well.

Our front seven on defense was average across the board. They (Philly) didn't run the ball well on us. But we needed more pressure, they missed on that big play (Ellis missing the sack on the 87-yard TD).

Parcells comments about benching Bledsoe
"I don't think changing the qb's is the answer RIGHT THIS MINUTE"

He's not completely ruling out the possibity, thats a good sign.

Whatever he does...
he ain't doing it this week...so I'mma try to quit chirping about it....if he plays bad against houston, man, that romo bandwagon is going to get pretty thick...

but it seems the national media has honed in on this story and everybody and their mama is blaming this loss on Bledsoe...

wouldn't go that far, but, like I said, he needs to play better....

parcells has said he wants to play romo at sometime this season....so, it's coming people...just don't know when....i figure sooner than later if bledsoe keeps playing like this...

good to see parcells harping on turnovers....that was really the key to the game, of some many keys...we don't fumble the punt, we don't throw interceptions, we don't fumble.....they don't get any gimme points....

if we have no turnovers in both the jax and philly games, we win those games...easily...of course, the main culprit is bledsoe, so....

another key, which I tried to point out before the game, was pressure. Our lack of it and the continuous pressure we got from the Iggles. I'm glad Parcells called our front seven out. What happens if we get similar pressure on McNabb? He fumbled once and threw a couple that should have been picked off. We pressure him like we did last year and we get the W.

Wow. The statement about Watkins was crazy. I'm glad I put the diary up about Coleman a few weeks ago. Seems like the general sentiment back then was he was going to be cut. Now he's in the mix again. Crazy.

Coleman
I think Parcells is sending a message to Watkins to test his mettle.

Me too
I won't be happy until Bledsoe is gone. I want to see what Romo has and whether or not he is our future franchise QB. I want that NOW. Bledsoe will cost us 3 or 4 more guaranteed and that is a conservative estimate.

BUT...Bill says he is still the guy and so there is no use in me harping about it anymore. I am not going to change Bill's mind.

So, on to the Texans.

one more really bad game by Bledsoe
and Parcells will pull the trigger. Most coaches who are totally behind their qb always dismiss thoughts of benching the starter to the media, but Parcells hasn't really done that with his "not at this time" qualifiers.

One more 2 or 3 INT game and the Tony Romo era will begin.

Bledsoe
Bledsoe probably feels this lose more keenly than anyone.  He played is heart out and sacrificed his body several times to try and get things done.  Drew Bledsoe is a very good quarterback. (here come the but)  However, (OK, fancy but) is not going to take a team to the next level.  Parcells plays it straight and allows his players to make up the difference.  This works if you have the 'playmakers', Drew is not that kind of player.  He is a leader and under most circumstances will make the throws and win the game.  I am not interested in  a great regular season; get into the playoffs then win it all.  I honestly don't know if Romo is that guy, but I do know Bledsoe is not.

Parcells is going to stick with Drew, so here's hoping I'm wrong.

Just think the Cowboys could have had Bruce Gradkowski instead of Montavious Stanley.

Parcells never laid any of the blame on Bledsoe.
It was always one or two guys on the offensive line that he faulted for the sacks or rushed throws.
Has he adopted Bledsoe or something?

Having made the decision
that Drew stays as the started Coach has to take the media pressure down a peg so Drew can stay focused.

Good news is
No injuries! Thats the most important stat. Aside from winning.

Too many turnovers will kill us especially against good teams.

If we had protected DB better, we wouldn't have been in the pickle we were at the end of the game. He was clearly rattled by then, and made some very poor throws. DB is the starter, so they need to work on pass protection. I think they need to work on screens and moving the pocket, because every team we face from here on out will be using Philly's plan of attack on defense on us.

Philly gained its yards in big chunks. They gambled and won. I thought our secondary was better than that, but not in this game. They need to work on that.

It sounded like BP intends to keep M Coleman and probably cut Suisham to make a roster spot.

As much as I hate it
I think some of the credit has to go to McNabb, a few of those throws were remarkable.

No doubt
McNabb had a great game. He is very good at throwing the long ball. But we should've expected that going into this game.

by APerfectStar on Oct 9, 2006 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

i hear ya tom
I am more dissappointd in the secondary than bledsoe.  We know Drew will make some idiotic plays, but I thought the defense would be better than 3 long td passes.  Having listened to the press conference it sounds like BP says it was all Watkins fault.  Ugh.

yeah
I thought Watkins would be the answer to our FS problems, and someday he might be, but as rookie he's going to make some mistakes.

Hopefully by the end of the year, he'll be playing better.

Re: LJ Smith Pass
"The LJ Smith pass wasn't Roy Williams fault. (ed note - I guess I got that one wrong, but he didn't say whose fault it was)."

On the LJ Smith pass, Ellis blitzed; it was Roy's responsibility to cover for him. Watkins was supposed to rotate to a cover one but was late. They called the perfect play, and neither safety was in position to cover.

by hdc on Oct 9, 2006 5:17 PM CDT reply actions

when was the last time we called the perfect play?
Zimmer sends the corner and they get a long TD.
Johnson sends everyone all the time and ex a late PI call, nothing happens...

is it b/c they were doubling the wr's and bledsoe was calling the max protection audible and keeping in the very guys who would have been open?

was it the wr's inability to get open?

was it bledsoe's inability to make the read?

was it bledsoe's inability to buy time?

was the line's inability to block?

how can they not have stallworth, barely play westbrook and have all these huge plays?

i have not been so frustrated by a team since danny white was qb and gibbs wr's would do their damn teepee celebration. (by the way which db broke that up? downs?)

Changing My Mind
After allowing this to sink in for 24 hours, I am now inclined to say that Bledsoe deserves at least 4 more games as the starter, not 2.  There's a few reasons for this:
  1.  The season is only a quarter of the way into it and the playoffs are still very much possible in this division.  Way, way too early to put in an unproven quarterback.  The only reason the Titans and Cardinals went with rookies is because they were 0-4, and had high 1st round multi-million dollar quarterbacks waiting on the bench.  They were essenially throwing up the white flag for this season and opting to rebuild.  Tampa Bay was a health emergency, or else Simms wouldn't have been replaced yet, and they were also 0-4, and he played worse than Bledsoe.
  2.  If (when) Parcells benches Bledsoe in favor of Romo, that's it for Drew.  He is not a hired gun in the pinch like Testeverde was for us in 2004.  Bledsoe is a lot like Kurt Warner, he has lost his job twice in the last 5 years to a younger guy (Brady worked out, Loseman sure hasn't).  Put him on the bench and he's done.  At that point Romo has to work out, because going back to Drew won't really be an option.  To do that after week 4 is almost as risky as blitzing a cornerback on 3rd and long, while leaving a rookie safety on an island.
  3.  I say 4 games because I don't think it is wise or fair to throw Romo into the flames for such a crucial 4 game stretch with a huge Monday night primetime game against the Giants, then two tough road games against Carolina and at the Redskins.  If the team has a losing record with Bledsoe after that stretch, then the playoffs will be out of reach anyway and bringing Romo in will not put as much pressure on him (or the rest of the team at that point), so he will be able to build his confidence up without so much stress riding on the rest of the season.
It is better to find out if Romo is truly the quarterback of the future for us once the postseason is out of reach and the pressure is off.  If that doesn't happen, then that will have meant that Bledsoe got his act together and is leading us to some big wins.  Either way, it's better to give it 4 more games.

Personally I hope Vick plays the season of his life this year so we can snatch Matt Schaub from Atlanta in the offseason since he will be an Unrestricted Free Agent this Spring.

Or...
is the Tuna waiting to see if the line will allow Bledsoe to be this year's playoff QB? I think it's a little of both. He probably wanted Tony ready if the line couldn't hang and neither could Drew. We'll see Romo by season's end because the answer will be what you've all really said... the line is OK against OK teams, but can't/won't get it done against better teams.

Parcells
is just kidding himself if he thinks the line will actually improve against good defenses because they won't.

The Time
for this offensive line to improve was last off-season.  Through free agency.

Now the rest of the NFL has the template for how to beat our pass protection.

Maybe playing Romo would at least keep defenses honest since he can scramble better.

So we can hope
that Parcells is ready to play Romo when that time comes. My fear is that he'll stay in character and stick with Drew until the bitter end.

Grizz - as always I appreciate your careful
analysis. Romo still makes sense to me against Houston as a chance to get up to speed and still win before the gauntlet (especially New York). Nov 23rd will be the next opportunity for Romo to start and by then we will have plenty of film on the o-line and Drew to solidify the decision.
