Players on the Hot Seat
Every Cowboy fan knows that the 2006 roster is the most talented its been since the mid 90's. After a few drafts and free agent signings over the past few years, Parcells has taken a mediocre team and built it into a very talented team in his own image which should definitely compete for the NFC championship this season at the very least. The vast majority of the positions are occupied by seasoned vets who we know will get their job done (Bledsoe, T.O., Glenn, Witten, Adams, Rivera, Ayodele, Williams, Henry, Vanderjagt) as well as young studs on the verge of stardom (Jones, Barber, Ware, Canty, Spears, James and Newman) However, there are 6 positions that still worry me, and will probably determine how good the Cowboys can really be this year.
CENTER - In my opinion, Johnson has to step up and play like a second round pick. If our line is going to be good this year, there shouldn't be any competition in camp, Johnson should win it easily. If not, we could be in trouble. You know what Madden says about qb's, and to me the same applies to centers, if you have two guys, you really don't have any.
KOSIER - This guy has to come in and play solid, not necessarily spectacular, but solid. I know he is more athletic than LA, but he has to prove to me he's strong enough to handle the bull rushes up the middle to protect Bledsoe. If he does that, I'll be happy.
RIGHT TACKLE - Whoever wins this job, Fabini or Petitti has to be better than Petitti was last year if the Cowboys are going to be really good. Parcells mentioned that Fabini wouldn't give up 15 sacks if he lined up backward, so I'm giving the nod to Fabini and hopefully Petitti improved enough to play if the vet goes down with an injury.
FERGUSON - This guy just simply has to play much better this year, no question. NT in a 3-4 defense is vitally important, and most people don't realize how good of a job Glover did last year playing the nose. This year, we only have two very young guys backing him up. Time for Jason to step up.
FREE SAFETY - I don't who is going to win this job, I'm hoping Watkins, but whoever does, must give Williams and the corners more help on the deep balls. If Coleman or Watkins can be the ball hawk this defense needs, our secondary will be the best in football, by far.
CARPENTER - Old Bobby has to at least play as well as Ware did last year for our defense to dominate. I'm hoping the kid is the real deal and if he is, look out, our defense will be awesome.
I think if at least 4 out of the 6 positons above come through with solid play, that elusive 6th title just could be within our grasp boys.
It all starts in a month, are you psyched or what?!
