Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Kornheiser impressed with Cowboys

Check out this article written by Tony Kornheiser who is one of the new guys in the MNF booth for ESPN. After covering the game for ESPN Monday, here's his take on our 'Boys.

And I don't want to get too sportsy on you, but those Dallas Cowboys looked awfully good. They've got a No. 1 running back in Julius Jones. Terry Glenn, she can play. She had a touchdown catch that was Randy Moss highlight worthy. Drew Bledsoe looked really good and behind him Tony Romo looked really good. And that's a stunner because I thought all Tony Romo did was ribs! And their defense smothered the Saints, who with Drew Brees and Reggie Bush were supposed to be so suddenly dynamic on offense. The Saints certainly are everyone's feel-good team this year, but the Cowboys trifled with them. At this point Redskins fans have to be hoping that when T.O. finally actually plays for the Cowboys he somehow detonates them. Because if T.O. plays like he can, without incident, those Cowboys can be massive.

It looks like Kornheiser is going to be another comedian in the booth like Dennis Miller, and we all know how that experiment turned out.

I like Kornheiser
but clearly the ESPN brass must of told tony to cool it down abit after the first week in the booth, Theisman probably complained to the Brass that he wasn't getting enough to bitch and complaining on air.

I like Kornheiser on PTI
But that's a short-format program and I really don't expect in-depth analysis. I watch for the sarcasm and the bear bounicng on the trampoline. But I can't see this working for 3-hours evey Monday. And Theismann is a nightmare. I might just hit the mute button during MNF.

His weekly column in the Washington Post is usually pretty good, and I personally liked him when he had his own 3h radio show.

I think Korny is tolerable in short bursts
especially when he's abusing Wilbon, but I agree, he really stared grating on my nerves in the 2nd half of the Saints game. And, of course, Joey T is a speak 1st think 2nd kinda of idiot (or just a plain idiot). The only guy I like is Tirico, even tho he kept calling Terrance Copper by the wrong name LOL.

The more I read mainstream sites like ESPN and CNNSI, the less respect I have for mainstream sportswriters.  They're boring, they're gimmicky, and they rarely offer any real analysis.  Hell, half of Peter King's columns are about his rectal exams, coffee, or other random subjects.  I read his columns to read about one thing: football; not baseball, not girls softball, not the war in Iraq, not about his travel stories.

Don't even get me started on the web designs or marketing schemes, e.g. having to click 50 times to get to an article on SI.com or having every other article be "Insider" on ESPN.

Sure, there's quality stuff out there, but it's hard to find.  That's why I love this site so much and check it multiple times a day at work.  Simple web layout, straightforward content, good writing, no gimmicks, and great analysis.

Unfortunately, my attitude about mainstream sportswriters extends to most commentators and broadcasts.  Shut up with the lame jokes and corny graphics, just let us watch some freakin' football.

John Clayton
I did think this was interesting way of looking at things from John Clayton:

Offensive line is probably the biggest concern throughout the league. Can the Chiefs survive without Willie Roaf on the left side of their line? The organization still is trying to talk him out of retirement. Most stops along my training camp tour this summer had concerns here. The Cowboys, Cardinals, Raiders, Chargers, Ravens, Bucs and a number of other teams could see their playoff hopes answered or dashed by the play of their offensive lines. The Packers are hoping to keep Brett Favre upright with two rookie guards -- Tony Moll and Jason Spitz. The thought going around the league is that just having an average offensive line would put you in the top 10 in the NFL. It's a big concern.

Kornholio
I liked Tony K as a sportswriter, a host on PTI, and when he used to have his show on ESPN Radio.

But he's an annoying nuisance and a literal third wheel on ESPN's football coverage.  It genuinely drives me crazy whenever he says something during the game because 80 percent of the time it irritates me.

I can't tell you how many times I've said "shut up Tony" while watching the Raiders-Eagles & Cowboys-Saints preseason games over the last two weeks.

It got to the point where my wife would yell, "who's Tony... and why do you keep telling him to shut up?"

Kan Kornheiser.

Tell Tony to stay out of the booth... he's out of his element.

I like Tony...
I like Wilbon more, but together I'm an avid fan. PTI is a must.

They don't seem to have an agenda like Cold Pizza (god I hate Skip Bayless) and they seem to genuine like each other (unlike Woody and Skip). I don't think MNF will ever get the cast right cause they keep changing the players. Dennis Miller sucked and was not funny. Rush Limbaugh would've been disasterous. He needs to stick to what he's good at: making an ass of himself.

I was cool with Dan Dierdorf, Al Michaels, John Madden, Frank Gifford (went to my high school!) and the assorted types. I kinda like my MNF a little snooty. I go to Sportscenter for all the cool, hip phrasing (even though that's getting old..just show the highlights dude), but I want my MNF a little old-school.

Don't know if Tony can provide that. But I like him. That's a start.
