Meet the Redskins

I asked Skin Patrol, who runs Hogs Haven, the SB Nation blog for the Redskins, to give us a look at the Deadskins this year. He graciously agreed and sent me this anlysis. Nothing better than getting a scouting report directly from the enemy. So enjoy, and visit Hogs Haven for some cross-blog trash-talk. My review of the Cowboys on his blog can be found here.

Skin Patrol's Redskins Review

Redskins against Cowboys is an epic matchup worthy of unreasonable plethoric hype. It is not so much a mere Football match between two football teams as it is a transcendental battle royal between Good and Evil, Right and Wrong, Art Monk and Michael Irvin, Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones (or is that evil vs. evil?). So on and so forth.

This also happens to be my favorite part of the year. With that in mind, let's take a look at where I think the Redskins are strongest and weakest:

Strength: Perhaps this is peppered most by what I perceive as the Cowboys greatest weakness, but I cannot wait to see the front 4 face off against the turbid Cowboys o-line. Cornelius Griffin is the better player in our interior; he had an interception against the Cowboys the last time the two teams played. Joe Salave'a is a very capable defensive tackle and takes up space well (he's a large guy). On the ends are Phillip Daniels and Andre Carter. Phillip Daniels also had a huge game last year, torching the Cowboys o-line for 4 sacks. He is backed up by Demetric Evans who was good for the only sack against crafty Brad Johnson last week (in a losing effort, I should note). Andre Carter was brought in to improve the Redskins pash rush and has failed to do anything impressive in that role. That said, former starter Renaldo Wynn returns and could very easily replace Carter. Depending on how the game plays out, having fresh legs on the field could turn into a gamebreaking scenario against a Cowboys offensive line that has underpreformed.

I also like our receiving unit which has improved significantly since last year. We've brought in a new coach who knows how to utilize offensive players more as well as some key receiving personnel in Antwaan Randle-El and Brandon Lloyd. And although the latter was silent last week, and the former is probably more useful on punt returns, they are both upgrades from last year's backups Thrash and Patten.

And this unit might not have needed improvement to succeed against the Cowboys. Santana Moss, essentially, single-handedly snatched a victory from the Cowboys in last year's first matchup. Chris Cooley showed up the second game and had 6 receptions -- half of them for touchdowns. If Brunell has time (which is not necessarily a given) then the Cowboys could find themselves in a heap of trouble.

Weakness: There is one big weakness on the Redskins defense that is cause for concern (and limits our entire defense in suspect ways). Shawn Springs is doubtful as of right now and will likely miss the Cowboys game. With Springs out, the Redskins are forced to rely on Carlos Rogers and, unfortunately, Mike Rumph/Kenny Wright. I don't have particular faith in either of these players as reliable starters in the NFL, and it doesn't help that they will be forced to matchup against the likes of Terry Glenn, Jason Witten, and Terrell Owens (whose inevitable meltdown could not come soon enough). There's no two ways around it; this matchup does not favor the Washington Redskins.

And really there's no satisfactory solution. You can try playing more conservatively (which is not Williams' style) and sacrifice safety blitzes for deep help. But this runs the risk of giving Bledsoe too much time to find the open man elsewhere on the field. Alternatively we could maintain our blitz heavy gameplan which runs the risk of putting Glenn or Owens 1-on-1 vs. Mike Rumph -- that's a touchdown.

The front four will have to get some push on the QB without blitz help for us to neutralize this missmatch. If Bledsoe has the time, he has the receivers, and that's going to result in some points on the board.

By the way, we better win or I have to write a kiss-butt diary on Hogs Haven praising the Deadskins win. Ugh!

looks like...
according to your analysis that if the Redskins don't get to Bledsoe, you guys will get torched pretty bad. On the flip side, our corners better cover than they did last week or we could be looking at a high scoring game, just the opposite as last year.

I'm comfortable with that overview
I think it is clear to both staffs where the biggest miss matches exist based off of injuries and the relative strengths of each team. Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn are very good wide receivers. Mike Rumph is not a very good cornerback, and Carlos Rogers is likely being asked to do more than he (currently) is capable of.

The O-Line is the oft repeated question mark on Dallas, so getting pressure on Bledsoe and disrupting his rhtyhm, sacking him, or causing turnovers would be paramount in winning this game.

I always look forward to high scoring affairs, just as long as we're the ones doing all the scoring.

Pretty fair analysis
We need our OT's to step it up for this game. Especially Flo. And we better be able to pick up the blitz.
Last week if Troy Williamson could catch, he would have been receiver of the week. I feel pretty good about our WR's vs the Skins secondary.
On defense I just hope our CB's play up to their ability, especially Henry. And I hope we get a lot of pressure on Brunell. Come on Ware!!!!!

Let's hope that the same level of noise is
generated in Texas Stadium as Foreskin fans did in RFK last Monday night.Plus they had Tom Cruise!

love that WR are their strength
This guy's review is nowhere close to as good as the Jags review.  I'd love to think that the Skin's WR are their strength, since they are at best an average unit-- Moss is a definite WR1, but all the others are really WR3s (but Cooley is legit).  I do agree that their DL is a strength -- definitely top 10 unit. Their other strength is probably their OL.  Portis is frequently not touched until he's passed the line of scrimmage.  Our lines are definitely going to be tested.

All that said, I think he nailed the key to the game.  Can the DL beat our OL quickly enough to prevent Bledsoe from getting rid of the ball (hopefully as bledsoe from last year/preseason).

Well done on your break down of the cowboys -- if I were a Skins fan, I think I would have found your piece very useful.

I would've thought...
that a Dallas Cowboys' fan, more than any other fan, could appreciate how our receiving unit is quite decent with Santana Moss and no one else. Especially considering we destroyed you in the final minutes of a Football game at Texas Stadium last year with exactly one receiver.

I included Cooley in my receiving unit evaluation, though I thought that point was clear. If I were a Cowboy, I'd include Witten as he is an extremely talented TE and clearly an active part of the Dallas receiving unit.

If you think ARE and Lloyd are bums, that's fine. So were Patten and Thrash last year and we still came out with two Ws. I believe ARE and Lloyd are upgrades, and I feel that the Dallas Cowboys had no answer for the Washington Redskins last year. Ergo, I think that an improved Redskins receiving unit is a strength to be exploited against the Cowboys... again.

RE: Grizz's breakdown of the Cowboys... I am a Redskins fan, and I find Grizz's breakdown of the Cowboys, or anything for that matter, of keen interest since Grizz is such an intelligent person and so skilled at his craft. This site is lucky to have him and I have nothing but respect for my Blogging rival since he consistently provides quality content that is virtually unmatched in the NFL blogosphere. Grizz and Terry know the game of Football as well as anyone, and I am always listening to their input/insight.

That said, the Redskins will win this Sunday. Cheers.

ahhhh....
Deadskin validation...nothing like it...

some good analysis on this blog too...but still not the quality of Grizz...

that being said we're going to beat the ethic stereotype off the redskins...so much so, joe gibbs is going to be running down the street naked and incoherent screaming "Tom Cruise! Use you're witchcraft to get the fire off me!"

Brandon Lloyd
Although you mentioned the signing of Brandon this winter perhaps you missed that Lloyd played against the Cowboys last year in San Francisco. Anthony Henry (he of last week's struggles to pass defend) gave up 4 catches for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns to LLoyd last year. Perhaps the one game most responsible for the Redskins signing him this year.

That said, Henry bounced back the following week last year and had a solid season except for injuries. I expect he will do so again this week, Lloyd or no Lloyd.

Now Randel-El.......
