Dallas drops Redskins 27 - 10

Update [2006-9-17 23:53:32 by Grizz]: Reports are that Terrell Owens has a broken ring finger and will need surgery. Initial estimates are he's out 2-4 weeks. That's a bummer on a successful evening. Turns out the bye week actually comes at a good time as far as that injury is concerned. [END UPDATE]

Despite playing a sloppy game with penalties and dropped passes, the Dallas Cowboys were simply too much for the Washington Redskins, winning 27-10. Drew Bledsoe shook off a week one disaster and threw 2 touchdowns, one to Patrick Crayton and one to Terry Glenn, but more importantly he didn't turn the ball over. Bledsoe's night could've been that much better, but by Bill Parcells count the Cowboys dropped 8 passes in he first half alone. As it was, Bledsoe was 19 of 38 for 237 yds. Terell Owens and Jason Witten were among the culprits on the dropped passes. Terry Glenn finshed the night as the main receiver, 6 catches for 94 yards with 1 TD.

While the Dallas offense was having its ups-and-downs, the Dallas defense was solid all night long. The Redskins only scored 3 points against the defense - the other 7 points came on a kickoff return - and Terence Newman made Santana Moss disappear. Dallas managed to get some pressure this week against Mark Brunell, finishing the night with 6 sacks distributed among 6 different players. But the real difference was the shut-down work turned in by the Dallas secondary. Washington only managed to get a couple of sustained drives in the 4th quarter after Dallas had a 27-10 lead. Roy Williams had an interception for the second week in a row.

The offensive line was stellar tonight, giving Drew Bledsoe plenty of time to make his throws and only surrendered one sack. Julius Jones made the running game effective enough to keep the Redskins defense honest. He finished with 20 carries for 94 yards, but he did have 1 fumble. Marion Barber contributed 65 combined yards and 1 rushing TD.

The Cowboys should feel better about themselves this week, the defense played up to their capabilites and Drew Bledsoe was cooly efficient. The dropped passes are of some concern as are the penalties, and Terrell Owens injured his hand, although it's unclear how badly.

This was a game Dallas needed badly, and they got it. Going into the bye week, Dallas is back as a contender.

Waiting to hear about Owens
Listening to the post-game and one of the first thing Greg "The Hammer" Williams said was "T.O. with a fractured hand, but that's the least of their worries...." and then he started talking about how T.O. is bound to blow up.  What the hell is wrong with these media people?  He casually reports FALSE information (Parcells said seconds later they don't know what's wrong with T.O. yet) and then starts bashing the guy.  That does it for me and the "Hardline," and the half-assed Hammer.  You would think we live in Philly to listen to these guys.

Parcells said he feels sick :)
And he told his team that.

TO said he has a broken hand
Needs surgery. Not sure when he will be back. Guessed maybe 2 - 4 weeks.

Bummer
Could be out 2-4 weeks. Did it on second play of the game.

That is why he was dropping passes.

I hope he's back for the
Eagles game..

We can beat Tennessee without him.

WR's
Sam Hurd and Jamaica Rector will need to step up.

Broken ring finger on right hand.

We won't miss him
with the passes he dropped tonight! I think he was too busy thinking about running to the Star instead of catching that perfect pass from Drew in the back of the end zone!

Dropped Passes
He most likely dropped the passes because of the broken finger! He said it happened the second or third play of the game.

He does draw double coverage consistently.....

Don't kid yourself, we'll miss him
Did you see how much they were rolling coverage his way? We won't have that for a few weeks. Yeah, he had a sloppy night, but we are going to miss him, without a doubt.

Not sure why
Parcells feels sick - Eldorado's injury? The not-so-special teams giving up a TD?

by lee3022 on Sep 17, 2006 11:26 PM CDT reply actions

BP feels sick because of 2 things
#1 giving up a 100 yd TD on the KO return

#2 the massive amount of penalties, unacceptable

Williams and Watkins
led the team with 6 tackles each. Good balance.

4-6 weeks
DFW Star Telegram reporting T.O. will be out 4-6 weeks.

T.O. says 2-4 weeks.

Total bummer if it ends up being something that keeps him out for awhile. Let's hope he heals quick!!

This is a time to rejoice
We let the Deadskins hang around too long due to penalties dropped passes and biggest of all the KO return. But overall, we ran very well against their front seven, our secondary played lights out, our front seven brought a lot of pressure and our blitzes looked good for a change, Bledsoe didn't throw INT's, we kept the pocket fairly clean, and our kickers looked good, especially McB.

Top performers - Newman, Williams, Ware, Ellis Fergie, Spears, McBriar, Flozell, Crayton, MBIII, Fasano.

I think if MB3 is cured of fumblitis, he should be elevated to #1 RB. He just looks so much better than JJ. As much as I hate to admit it, he gives us more big plays consistantly.

I'm not too worried about TO's finger. We have the bye week, then TEN (we won't need him to beat them) and there is NO WAY he will miss the return to Philly. So its a non factor, although I'm sure it will be the lead story in every NFL media coverage.

by APerfectStar on Sep 18, 2006 12:48 AM CDT reply actions

I still don't understand why people think
MB3 is playing better or more consistent than JJ. The numbers just don't show that.

JJ averaged 4.7 yards per carry and MB3 averaged 4.9 yards per carry. And JJ achieved his average with twice as many carries. MB3 had a one 26 yard pass catch and JJ had an even longer one called back.

There's no reason to displace JJ as the #1 back considering he's averaged over 4 yards a carry in two games against two good run defenses. JJ is doing a fine job so far.

Agreed Grizz
JJ had a great game yesterday. He was taking advantage of wholes that weren't terribly large and was really driving without losing his elusiveness. I am not able to see a lot of Cowboys games, but this is the first time I've seen JJ look like a complete back against a really good front seven. MB3 is a nice backup to have, but doesn't have JJ's talent. It looked to me, Grizz you can check this on the tape if you like, that MB3 had much larger holes open in front of him than JJ did. That being said, MB3s pass blocking was nothing short of fantastic.

As long as JJ keeps avg over 4.0
its fine to let him stay #1. But I'd like to see Barber get more touches. You have to admit he runs with more power and determination than JJ. And he's a better receiver coming out of the backfield. I still think JJ has more potential, but he needs to play with more passion, like he did in the games where he went off for 140 plus performances.

by APerfectStar on Sep 18, 2006 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions

JJ did well in both games
just compare him in Jacksonville to Sammy Parker and the Steelers Monday night. Washington has a good run defense and only Philadelphia on our schedule will be as good as these two. If JJ stays healthy he may average 100 yards per game. Right now he is at 83. I liked the way Coach pounded MB3 at the goal line Sunday. Both runners are good assets.

I'm not happy
with the team's performance at all. The Redskins were horrible and should have blown them out by halftime. Way too many penalties and dropped passes and that kickoff return was unacceptable.

I hear you
but this is a rivalry game and the history of such games is that only the wins count. Most of these games (rivalry games) provide much to be unhappy with. We will correct some of the errors by Tennessee. And I am not convinced Washington is too bad. Watch them nail Houston next week. If they lose to Houston then they are baaaaaad.
