Mock drafting

Snooze. Waiting on the Tuna has sure slowed the news to a crawl out of Valley Ranch. So there's only one thing to do, and that's to look at some mock drafts. Woo hoo! Is there anything more fun than mock drafts in the offseason?

I only looked at a few, so feel free to add other ones that you find in the comments. I know we don't know who our coach will be, and free agency will radically alter draft plans because needs are no longer needs. But who's got time to wait on all that?

Without further ado:

Scouts, Inc. at ESPN Insider:

22. Dallas (9-7)

Projected pick: +Reggie Nelson, S, Florida
Nelson, a speedy center fielder with excellent ball skills, would provide an ideal complement next to hard-hitting S Roy Williams.

NFL Draft Countdown:

Update [2007-1-18 14:28:35 by Grizz]: As noted by Parl in the comments, NFL Draft Countdown has updated their mock draft since I checked them for this post. They think S Reggie Nelson will be off the board, so they got us taking a lineman now.

Here's the updated pick:

Justin Blalock OG/OT Texas
The Cowboys have two clearly defined needs at offensive guard and free safety so with LaRon Landry and Reggie Nelson both off the board here this decision becomes relatively easy. Marco Rivera is just about finished due to a back injury and while it might not be a sexy or popular selection in round one the Cowboys need to find a suitable replacement. Justin Blalock played right tackle for the most part in college but will probably move inside to guard at the next level and he could be a real all-around force there. If either Landry or Nelson were available they'd be hard to pass up but word has it that Anthony Henry might move to safety and if that happens the need will shift from free safety to cornerback so that could be an option as well. With things as they are Blalock probably makes the most sense at this point and his addition would go a long way towards improving what has been a pretty average offensive line for quite some time now.
Below was the reasoning for Reggie Nelson, which I'll leave up for the record.
REGGIE NELSON [S, Florida]

The Cowboys have two clearly defined needs at offensive line and free safety but with there not being an o-lineman worthy of this pick on the board their decision becomes easy, although I'm not so sure they would take a Levi Brown over Reggie Nelson anyway. For years now the safety spot opposite Roy Williams has been a problem area for this team and in all honestly they haven't made much of an effort to address it via free agency or the draft. After yet another long season of seeing Williams get burnt in coverage something tells me that is going to change sooner rather than later though. It's really not Williams' fault as he's more suited to be an in-the-box type and by expecting him to cover wideouts deep you are simply asking for trouble. Nelson only has a couple of years of Division I experience but he has made the most of them and was one of the true impact defensive backs in the college game this past season. A ballhawk and playmaker in the secondary, some feel Nelson could even project to cornerback at the next level but in Dallas he'd be a perfect fit at safety and his coverage skills would finally provide an ideal compliment to Williams and help eliminate some of the big breakdowns that have haunted them.

Consensus Draft Service:

PICK #22 The Cowboys Pick:
Levi Brown (OT, Penn State) It's been an up-and-down year for Dallas, but making the playoffs is an accomplishment. The Cowboys couldn't hide protection problems with the statue-like Drew Bledsoe standing in the pocket, but they have been able to mask problems up front with the mobile Tony Romo at QB. Levi Brown is a solid OT prospect from Penn State, who has been a senior leader on the offensive line for the Nittany Lions. Beyond offensive line, they might want to add another pass-rushing OLB, because they were not the same defense after Greg Ellis went down. Oh, and they could probably also use a holder...

Two for a safety and one for an offensive tackle.

Anybody got some others?

Nope
I am good with the safety!! We need a good ball hawking, speedy free safety....

I think a ball hawking safety
who can effectively play the cover 1 would cure all our defensive woes.
In Romo we Trust

Except the pass rush
gotta deal with that weakness as well. And maybe before we deal with safety given that Watkins is not bad and may get better.

I'd rather get a FS in FA
I don't know who is available, but trusting a rookie to revamp our D is not what I would like to see.

NFL Draft Countdown has been updated.
They now think Reggie Nelson would be off the table for our pick and have us taking JUSTIN BLALOCK, OG out of Texas.

I have a friend at UF who says that one of the things UF fans joke about is that they were pissed Ohio State didn't go deep against their secondary, so no one could see how good Reggie Nelson really is.

Mel Kiper Jr.
According to "The Hair", Nelson is #7 on his Big Board.  If that is the case I doubt we will see him slide to us at 22.  Of course, a lot can happen between now and then.

I don't see us picking a Guard in round 1.  It's not an impact position.  A Guard may be our first pick, but that's because I expect us to trade down into the second round.  We still have depth concerns at LB and I expect the extra picks will be used to shore that up.

All in all, we do need major improvement on the O-Line.  The last time we were a dominant team we had a dominant O-Line.  We will not achieve dominance without starting up front.

I agree
in part because it's rare for a rookie O lineman to be really god in his first season. We'd do better picking up Rivera's replacement in FA and going after developmental players in the later rounds.

I think we might get a cornerback
cuz we have two aging cbs and we might want to move Henry to FS.

Traditionally
The Cowboys don't draft an O-lineman in the first round.

If we follow the theme of the last few years, we can address needs via free agency so we can just draft the best players available in the draft.

Here are some other views of Cowboys pick:
Footballminds.com

Quinn Pitcock - 12/13/06 - 2006 AP All-American First Team: DT Quinn Pitcock, a 295-pound senior from Piqua, Ohio, has eight sacks for the undefeated and No. 1-ranked Buckeyes. "In 30 years of coaching defensive linemen, I have never had a better player," said Ohio State Defensive Coordinator Jim Heacock. "He always maintains humility and always puts team before self." (From NFL Draft Scout)

NFLDraftForecast.com:

Jeff Smardzija -12/13/06 - 2006 AP All-American Second Team: WR Jeff Samardzija, already named first team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America, was the first Irish player to earn first team All-America status in consecutive seasons since Bobby Taylor in 1993 and 1994. Samardzija has completely re-written the Irish receiving record book. A Walter Camp second team All-American and Biletnikoff finalist in 2006, he leads Notre Dame with 70 catches and 958 yards. Samardzija has also grabbed 11 touchdown passes. He owns the school record for career receptions (171), career receiving touchdowns (26) and career receiving yards (2,534). (From NFL Draft Scout)

DraftAce.com:

Robert Meachem - 12/13/06 - 2006 AP All-American Third Team: WR Robert Meachem set a Tennessee season record this year with 1,265 receiving yards on 67 catches thus far and hauled in 11 touchdown passes. The Tulsa, Okla., junior leads the SEC and is third nationally with a 105.4-yard receiving average. (From NFL Draft Scout)

HeardsFootballReport.com:

BRANDON MERIWEATHER - 11/27/06 - Prospects on the Decline: Like Florida defensive tackle Marcus Thomas mentioned previously, Miami free safety Brandon Meriweather is a standout on the field. A second team ACC selection last year when he led the team with 115 tackles, chipping in 13 tackles for loss, 7 PBUs, and 3 INTs. Despite missing action this season, he leads the team again in tackles (76 tackles through 10 games). Athletic and intelligent, Larry Coker's staff elected to move Meriweather to cornerback when injuries depleted the position. At 6-0, 190 pounds and running in the 4.4s, Meriweather faired well at the new position and is among the country's best at his usual free safety spot. Blessed with legitimate cover skills, as well as the physicality and toughness to be a force against the run, Meriweather entered his senior campaign as a possible first round pick. Pro scouts were concerned with Meriweather's decisions off the field when he pulled a gun from his pants and shot three times at an assailant. Though local law enforcement found that Meriweather acted legally, Meriweather's propensity for questionable behavior reared again when he was seen trying to stomp on several Florida International players during the now infamous brawl that erupted between the two teams earlier this year.

Well first
we don't need to shore up our LB and whatever we do need can be found in the free agency. Next, if we replace rivera in free agency than we can wait till later rounds in the draft for that.

I beleive that if we draft a ball-hawking center fielder, than yes, it will help our D, but not as much as I think the fastest best cover CB would and move Henry to FS. He's got just enough speed and good height for the postion, besides he has experience at it. I just think that would help Roy out alot with someone that can cover.

If you remember he had his best season when he had Darren Woodson back there, and to comment on one of the other comments. Why not draft a corner and have hgim start, they did it to Newman and he's not old, and other teams do it all the time.
