More on the Cowboys search for a head coach

Both media front-runners for the Cowboys head coaching position are both at the Senior Bowl. The DMN blog talked to Norv Turner's current boss, Mike Nolan.

49ers head coach Mike Nolan just said the Cowboys have not asked for permission to speak with Turner (right). However, I got the impression Turner would be allowed to speak.

Wade Phillips hasn't spoken with the Cowboys as of yet.

Also, Phillips, whose dad lives on a big ranch near Victoria, Texas, hasn't spoken with anyone associated with the Cowboys.

Here's a good read on Wade Phillips, his work in San Diego, and his approach to defense.

"The system is to try to get the players that are on the field to utilize their talent," [Wade] Phillips said. "They say 3-4, but the guys that can rush we try to rush `em ---- you saw (Steve) Foley last year and (Shawne) Merriman this year ---- and players that do things, whatever it is they do well, we try to get them (there). Whether it's playing man-to-man, play zone or whatever it is."

Nowhere is that more apparent than in the linebacking corps. Because of injuries, Phillips has had to mix and match to patch holes.

Alongside the venerable Donnie Edwards ---- the unit's only constant ---- have been run stuffers Randall Godfrey, Stephen Cooper, Ben Leber and Matt Wilhelm, and pass rushers Foley, Merriman and Shaun Phillips.

Despite constant shuffling, the unit's effectiveness has stayed constant.

"We've had three and four starters out the last few games and we've played well," Phillips said. "We've got a lot of good linebackers, but you have to.

"(Management has) done a good job of getting us strengthened at areas."

Good stuff.

Dan Reeves wants his chance at the Cowboys head coaching position.

Dan Reeves, who appeared in nine Super Bowls as player or coach during a 37-year NFL career, wants to talk to the Dallas Cowboys about the coaching vacancy left by Bill Parcells' retirement.

Speaking yesterday from his vacation home at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in north Georgia, Reeves said he phoned the Cowboys on Monday to express interest in the job.

Oh yeah, there's that Senior Bowl thing going on, where a lot of our potential coaches are, and where the Cowboys' scouts are. Jeff Ireland discusses his philosophy in this article.

It was in the Parcells' regime that Ireland was elevated to the franchise's top scout two years ago. In the two drafts that he ran for the Cowboys, the ratings and evaluations were based on the prototypical "Parcells Players." It was a prototype that Ireland mostly agreed with, as did Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones.

Although Ireland's tastes run in similar patterns to that of Parcells, he is a man who insists that whatever the preference of the new coach, he will find the players that fit.

There is one potential catch: Ireland does not know he will be returning in the same title under the new head coach. It's presumed he will.

"Jerry sent word to me. He knows I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing," Ireland said. "The Jones's are going to lean on me more than ever. I accept that. It drives me even harder to find the right person if that's what they want me to do."

With speculation buzzing in Mobile about who will coach the Dallas Cowboys in '07, the scouting staff spends its days rating players according to the same parameters they used previously. They interviewed some of college footballs more distinguished seniors using the same questions as before.

If Ireland has a question for Parcells, he has the number.

"He's a friend. I don't know if I'll consult with him," he said. "I'll ask him, as a friend, what his opinion is. We have that type of relationship."

I brought this up from the other thread
I just cannot see this happening. Unless Jerry think Garrett can be a stooge like Campo and Jerry can control things and do everything his way again.

Anway, apparently Garrett and Jones are talking about more than the Offensive Coordinator position:

IRVING - Not only is Jason Garrett talking to the Cowboys on Wednesday about possibly becoming the team's offensive coordinator but also its next head coach, according to director of public relations Rich Dalrymple.

Reeves
is an interesting possibility. He's a Tom Landry disciple and has a wealth of football knowledge. Class act who would be a great face of the franchise.

That being said, I'm really starting to like the idea of Garrett becoming OC and eventual HC. The guy is extremely intelligent and could really do great things for our offense. I'm really pulling for the Phillips/Garrett combo.

Or Turner-Garrett
In either case, the idea of prepping the future sounds like great strategic thinking...

If it ends up being
Turner and Garret, I sure as hell hope we find a very good defensive coordinator. We really need one, in my opinion. I really like the Phillips-Garrett combo though.

Absolutely

If we do bring in Turner/Garrett
Then Singletary as DC would be a good get. Turner is on staff in SF where Singletary is listed as linebackers coach/asst. head coach. Norv would be familiar enough with Singletary to recommend him to JJ if he thought it would be a good fit.

On a side note-
I read on the 49ers.com website that they are interviewing Dave Campo for the DC position. That could mean they are already preparing for this situation.

by APerfectStar on Jan 24, 2007 7:00 PM CST up reply actions

SF recently fired their DC from last season
His name was Billy Davis.  He was fired about three weeks ago.

The Niners also looked at Donnie Henderson recently, who got axed by Detroit at the end of the regular season.

If Campo gets hired as the Frisco D Coordinator, that would make Larry Allen, Antonio Bryant, Norv Turner and Dave Campo as ex-Cowboys on that San Francisco roster.

What's up with that?

ESPNews and Ed Werder
The report is now that Garrett is the TOP candidate for HC.

I'm torn on this.  He's very young, but he's smart and he's a winner.

I'm not sure
that he can go from qb coach to head coach.  I have no doubt that in time he could become a good head coach but he needs more seasoning.

Coaching by Committee
They need one guy - not a combination, to lead this team.  I would be thrilled to see Garrett, really, but then he needs a solid OC and a solid DC, to make it work right.  Just my 2 cents.

by King Man on Jan 24, 2007 8:48 PM CST reply actions

Either he's the next Payton...
Or this is a bad move.  I think there are any number of 3-4 D assistants out there that could be hired as the DC.  And maybe Sparano becomes the official OC.

I don't like it
The guy hasn't even called any offensive plays before and he is going to become the head coach???!!! Seems he should cut his teeth as a coordinator first.

Not sure how much credence to give this report, but I don't see anything in making him a head coach that bodes well for the team. It smacks of Jerry getting back in and meddling again. God help us!

by Philosopher on Jan 24, 2007 9:16 PM CST up reply actions

I agree
It's going to be easier to get a DC with 3-4 expertise.

It's strange to think Garrett would jump from QB coach with 3 years NFL tenure for a team with bad QB play (although, to be fair, they had very limited talent at the position) to head coach of the premier franchise in the NFL.

by APerfectStar on Jan 24, 2007 9:21 PM CST up reply actions

Its being reported
That Dallas has asked and received permission to talk to Wade Phillips, no date for the interview has been given as of yet, but Phillips is flying back to San Diego.

by Deke on Jan 24, 2007 9:15 PM CST reply actions

I hope so!!
I wouldn't mind Phillips being the HC and Garrett being the OC. I just don't like the idea of Garrett jumping right to HC.

Ed Werder just reported
That JG will be hired tomorrow in some capacity.  It remains to be seen if he will be our next HC.

Guys, don't worry
Garrett is an extremely bright guy, he's going to be a great coach in this league someday. I think he's an excellent fit for the Cowboys right now.

I was wondering what your take would be
Can JG being hired be the equivalent of Romo taking over?

by Poke @ Blogging The Boys on Jan 24, 2007 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

I think Garrett
would accelerate Romo's development termendously. He's one of these really bright young guys who will be around for a while. Jones is very smart to hire him at least as OC right now and groom him to be the future HC.

by Terry on Jan 24, 2007 9:40 PM CST up reply actions

Garrett as a qb
lacked great physical ability, but I remember when he played, he always knew where to go with the ball, knew the offense inside and out. He just lacked a great arm, mobility and athletic ability.

Players like that who lack the physical gifts to be great players usually end up being great coaches because to survive in the league they had to make up for their lack of physical talent with intelligence and film work.

Question about interviewing?
on espn about garret and how it is almost a done deal that he wil be hired in some capacity....

question, he can't just be hired to be head coach immediately becuase I think the rules in the NFL state that each team must interview a minority candidate and I donm't think the cowboys have as of yet......but he could be hired as OC and then elevated to head coach later.

In fact, per the miami dolphins Garret has to be hired in some capacity or the cowboys can longer talk to him....has to be done by this Thursday..t.he next few days will be interesting.

what about Pete Carroll?
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2741773

This article above discusses the issues with reggie Bush and USC...another question...is it possible that if these allegations develop quickly enough and that it appears that USC will be sanctioned on a go-forward basis that Pete Carroll looks towards the NFL as a way out and thatmaybe he and Jerry get together for a position here...

I would like a Pete Carroll/Jason Garrett Combo.

by simbaa on Jan 24, 2007 10:03 PM CST reply actions

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Pete Carroll was a complete failure in his two head coaching jobs in New York and New England, he's a college coach, period!!!

by Deke on Jan 24, 2007 10:28 PM CST up reply actions

Plus, King Jerry wouldn't cede total control
And that's what Carroll's gonna want -- full GM/HC authority.

It's been succesful elsehwere
This is what I've been thinking about since I heard the news about JG being the Fav Candidate for HC.

Of course Avery had a lot more experience (as a player coach) than Garrett has, but it worked wonders for the Mavs.
