Cowboys vs. Giants gameday open thread (part II) 11/11/07

Open Thread for the rest of the Cowboys/Giants game.
Update [2007-11-11 19:15:35 by Dave Halprin (Grizz)]: Use this thread as a celebration thread for the Cowboys 31-20 victory over the Giants. I’ll have a recap up later tonight, but post your thoughts and comments here. Tony Romo and Terrell Owens just ate up New York in the second half.
We are 8-1 and we just beat our closest competitor in the NFC East and swept the season series from them. Frankly, we’re just kicking booty right now.
Go Cowboys!

Apparently the Giants thought
the best way to win was copy what we were doing in the first half, and that was take as many penalties as you can and dont control the clock or convert on third downs. Here a hint G-men, it doesn't work that way!!!!!!!

coverage
or, what the hell was that?
they bumped him wtih two different people and then just let him run free. was that really the plan? cause thats not how you cover the best receiver in the conference.

witten
Witten was a decoy for TO. If Witten catches few but draws the coverage, he still made a great contribution.
In an earlier game the role was reversed.

jones
still think it should have been him on that series. i think there is another series that mb3 could have come in on, but a JJ screen would have been a good call. don't know why they are married to not switching out RB's within a series
by ab03 on Nov 11, 2007 5:58 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
It's a tricky thing
when you're using 2 RB's - if they swap out in the middle of a series, that could be a clear indication that they intend to run it...

Game balls!!!
one to the Giants for wearing the red Jerseys, I mentioned the other day that would be a guaranteed win for us.
The Giants defense for deciding to follow our defensive example in the first half and take as many key penalties as possible to help us out in the second half.
and third and not least, Flozell Adams, for not getting a false start penalty the whole game, and because I haven't heard Umenyiora's name called all game.

Actually...
...it's a 2.4 game lead. End of the year tiebreakers don't come into play if both teams have the same number of wins but one team has one fewer loss thanks to a tie game...

NFC
the other two teams that were supposed to be up and coming in the NFC were New Orleans and Detroit, and both of them got creamed today. The only other team that is even close in the conference is the Packers. So we'll see about that in 3 weeks. But right now I'd say a Dallas-New England matchup in the superbowl is a pretty decent bet.

by Terry on Nov 11, 2007 6:29 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
In an odd twist
I found myself rooting for the Eagles. What a strange place the NFC has become.
In years past if the Cowboys got a chance to cement their standin gin the NFC, they squandered it. Today they jump all over it. This is a different beast we're watching, guys.

Best win of the season so far...
The Giants got big days from Jacobs and Shockey and still couldn't pull it out at home in front of a jacked crowd.
Personally, I'd rather not see them a third time, but I can't say I'd be too worried either.
Awfully nice of them to give all those stupid penalties back in the second half.
by Big D Bam Bam on Nov 11, 2007 6:37 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I hope the MSM finally...
...gives Romo and the Cowboys their props, but I doubt it.
Here are some of the things that the BSPN talking sh**heads will say to make excuses for why the New York Giants lost the game (and of course without spending as much time to give Dallas as much credit):
- Plaxico Burress was playing with a bad ankle, and that was a primary reason NY lost (Rebuttal: Burress played with the same bad ankle in Week 1 that he's struggled all TC with and he killed our secondary in their 45-35 loss).
- Starting OT Kareem McKenzie got hurt and left the game (Rebuttal: our D-line and OLBs kept continued pressure up front to keep Eli's feet happy as the game wore on anyway).
- The Cowboys didn't beat the Giants, the Giants gave the game away in the second half with all of their penalties (Rebuttal: Dallas committed just as many penalties in the first half and still managed to win the game, so it's possible to overcome self-destructive acts and still come out victorious).
- The Cowboys were lucky that Eli Manning and the G-Men beat themselves with those delay of game penalties (Rebuttal: The NY Giants were lucky that Dallas didn't lead by more in the first half if the Cowboys didn't commit so many penalties before halftime).
I'm waiting with baited breath to see how the mediots spin this without giving our Cowboys respect...

by Deke on Nov 11, 2007 7:07 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
so are you predicting a loss to green bay?
it will be the toughest game left in the schedule, but I still give the boys the edge with a more balanced offense (even though they showed surprising run success against a good run defense today). I figure we have a better than even chance to go 15-1.
by scottmaui on Nov 11, 2007 7:10 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs

yeah, but its the deadskins, they stink
by Terry on Nov 11, 2007 7:16 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well
the Cowboys almost lost to Buffalo and struggled a few other times. They'll lose again because most teams do - drop their intensity on a day when the other team doesn't.
The good news is that they are likely to stay on their toes for the Skins and the Packers.
by dunkman on Nov 11, 2007 7:16 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs

even New England could lose at some point. But I still think the 'boys have the edge to win the rest of their games.

favre is romo's hero
the other cool thing about the packers game will be to see the matchup between favre and romo, who is of course compared to favre and idolized him growing up in Wis. That will obviously be the big story going into that game (aside from the NFC showdown of possible 10-1 teams), and will make it interesting to see the old and young generation going head to head.
by scottmaui on Nov 11, 2007 7:16 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i thought...
and that pass rush was going to rush Romo into mistakes?
how come we had five sacks?
and Manning had two picks?
by Tuna Helper on Nov 11, 2007 7:15 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
the combination of our dominant O-line
and Romo's legs neutralized their supposedly dangerous pass rush.
by scottmaui on Nov 11, 2007 7:17 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
on the other side of the ball
our D-line got good pressure, but several of his sacks were coverage sacks I think. He had lots of time but didn't get rid of the ball and ended up getting sacked. So despite the fact that they picked on Williams with Shockey and took some good advantage of that matchup, the D-backs generally did a good job not giving him targets on those plays where he got sacked.
by scottmaui on Nov 11, 2007 7:46 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
True
Makes me wonder why they didn't try more plays out of the package with Shockey split out. Roy was giving him a 12 yard cushion.
But overall coverage was pretty good and led to at least a couple of those sacks.

I dunno. Something to remember: Even though you're the better team, it doesn't mean you always win. But there are a few games that should be over by half time.

Ah sweet victory
I am in total bliss. What a great win. Good job to all the Boys. I even forgive Burnett, who came back strong in the second half.
Life is good right now, and I'm going to be savoring this win for the whole week.
PS I don't think the Gint's defense wiped that smile off Romo's face. He looked really happy in the post game interviews :)

This Dallas team might be the best of the best!
Romo will be as good, if not better than Troy.
T.O. is becoming equal if not superior to
Michael Irvin.
Although, we don't have an Emmmitt Smith, we have JJ and MB3. Combined, their ability is close enough.
When Glenn is back and everyone is healthy, bring on New England!
***********GO COWBOYS**********
by Wharter on Nov 11, 2007 7:43 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
well, I even wouldn't go that far
but they are definitely good enough to win the SB if they play well in all phases against NE
by Terry on Nov 11, 2007 7:47 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Not one of those statements are close
to being right.
by Deke on Nov 11, 2007 7:50 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
here's why
Romo is not close to having the ability of Troy Aikman, Aikman has a stronger arm, much more accurate arm, big game player, he was a surgeon, slice and diced defenses at the start of games in his prime. very underated as a quarterback.
Micheal Irvin was a team leader on the field, made bigtime catches, T.O drops more passes than I can count, Irvin made the catches in double coverage, never was a head case in the locker room, didn't destroy teams, changed the game in his era, being a big physical receiever, went across the middle, always wanted the ball when the game was on the line.
Emmitt is alot better than JJ and barber put together, all time leading rusher, won a last game of the season in 1993 against the Giants by himself, sealed games in the fourth quarter. All you have to do is watch the drive in the superbowl, the second time against the Bill when he carried the ball to start the second half all but one time for the game changing drive of the game. He's a hall of famer, he's tha same guy that som many cowboy fans wanted replaced with Troy Hambrick.
Chances of Terry Glenn ever coming back this year, or ever is becoming slimmer and slimmer every day. You never hear anything about him even getting close, Wade Phillips know nothing about how Terry is coming along.
by Deke on Nov 11, 2007 8:10 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
HaHa!
Yeah DEKE, we may be drinking the kool-aid but i'm sticking by my 14-2 prediction
by TrueBlue24 on Nov 11, 2007 7:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I dunno...
Aikman was very good, but Romo has a chance to be very good also. There's potential, but a lot of guys have had "potetial" (see: Caulpepper, Daunte).
I think that if TO had the same attitude he has now earlier in his career, stuck with one team, etc etc, things might be different. He's real good now, but on the downside of his career.
JJ and MB3 are not in the realm of No.22.
But I do agree with the last post. I posted a diary about it a week ago. If Terry Glenn comes back healthy, and the rest of the team stays healthy, it can compete with NE for 4 quarters (instead of 3 like last time).

Hell, he's only in his 1st full season as a starter.
by Wharter on Nov 11, 2007 8:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
thats true
but QBs are judged by SB wins. Troy's the best until Romo gets at least 3 rings
by Terry on Nov 11, 2007 8:05 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
yes he may and probably will
have better stats than aikman this year.but aikmans best years came with a team loaded at EVERY position and a defense that could overpower opponents.right now we're merely outscoring everybody although, our defense gets better every game!
by TrueBlue24 on Nov 11, 2007 8:07 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
states doesn't mean everything
Troy Aikman never needed big passing games to win, he sliced and diced defenses early in games, the cowobys got up early, then handed the ball to Emmitt with Moose lead the way and said, here you go team, we run three running plays, now try to stop it. They couldn't.
If you want to see how good Troy Aikman actualy was, go put in the 1994 NFC championship game tape on between the boys and San Francisco, that was a great QB show by troy Aikman, a game when we got down big early, but if a clear pass interferrence call was made on Deion on Irvin, I'm sure That would of went down as one the greatest comeback of all time. Aikman was great in a loss.
by Deke on Nov 11, 2007 8:20 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Owens close to Irvin???
I don't see how Cowboy fans put Smith and Aikman above Irvin as far as importance to the team. Stats have to be put to the side when you talk about a team leader and inspirational leader on the field like Irvin. He was a true winner.
by Chris Hanes on Nov 11, 2007 8:05 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
What???
So only Irvin's 2nd and 3rd seasons count? Plus the fact he had a rookie QB throwing to him.
No, I didn't go to the games but I didn't realize that going to the games made one an expert.

You're sure as hell not an expert!
by Wharter on Nov 11, 2007 8:04 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
No I'm not.
You are. You went to the games.
Look, just because Romo puts up better stats (and he surely will if he stays healthy over his career) does not automatically mean that he's better than Aikman. Aikman was in a totally different situation and could have no doubt thrown for 300 yards each game if that would have been asked of him, but it wasn't. I am a huge Romo fan and was calling for him to start at the beginning of last season If you would like to research posts from the beginning of last season feel free, but to compare him to Aikman on pure stats is a bit unfair to Aikman I think.
Smith, while I was never a huge fan (I just think he's too fake and I think that if Barry Sanders would not have retired early then Emmitt would have retired probably 3 or 4 years earlier than he did knowing that he would never catch what would have been Barry's rushing record) is waaaaay better than even the duo of Jones and Barber but that's just because I think Jones stinks so much.
Irvin is the best receiver of my time that the Cowboys has had. I can't speak of Hayes. But I think it would be real hard for the Cowboys to ever find another Irvin.

Chris, I respect your opinion,
I got a little too excited at the win over the Giants. This team could be the very best with some refinement and additional talent at certain positions.
No disrespect meant.

how much talent did Dallis have in his
second and third season, none!! The rebuilding process was just starting

Romo has greater intangibles
But TO is not Michael. His hands are still stone. But who knows what could happen.

the 2nd best team in the league.

this is a freaky game
2 kick returns for touchdowns, and did you see that interception? a crazy endzone pick, and then the colts got robbed of a 94 yard interception return to the 6 by an inadvertent whistle.

I thought they had a good chance to lose
but I didn't think SD would blow them out.

I just thought the Chargers would be alittle
p#%@&off after last weeks loss to AP in minnesota and the yards they got torched by and that Indy would have a letdown after the loss to the patriots

I Can Mention It Now
Without fear of jinxing the team, but the Cowboys have won eight straight road games in the regular season. That is the second longest winning streak in franchise history; the longest is 10 straight during 1968-69.
Last road loss in the regular season was the crazy game in Washington over a year ago.
The really great teams play well on the road, so this is a good sign. Our next road game will be in Detroit, which is legendary Temple of Doom for the Cowboys. More on that when we get closer to the game.

where is that alltime leading kicker
by Deke on Nov 11, 2007 8:58 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Let Us All Bask In Romosexuality
He doesn't have the cannon Troy had, he's not quite Roger the Dodger, but the man has an intangibility that few quarterbacks could have.
The Cowboys are still not on the level that New England is, but who knows what will happen, should all things go well, what could happen on a given Super Bowl Sunday. We're far and away from that, but the chance exists.

absolutely
there have been many memorable upsets in SB history

I was at work so I missed the game
Another sweet victory. Although the team shouldn't enjoy it too much since we gave the Giants 10 points thanks to penalties. We've got to fix that.
But you know what? We're 8-1! At this point last season, we were 5-4. I'd say that's an improvement, don't you? :D
We should sweep the rest of our division games. The Redskins are thoroughly mediocre and the Eagles are fading, so we should beat them both. They'll play us hard and give us some trouble, but we should win our first division crown since Realignment this season. It's ours to lose.

San Diego can't handle success
Moments ago they had Indy ready for the fork-sticking, now the Colts are only down by 2.
Peyton Manning might become the second QB this season to throw 5 picks in a game and still win.

SD
if they can't put the colts away (which i don't think they can) i imagine they will run norv turner out of town.
Funny, I don't hear the DMN types clamoring for their old buddy Norv anymore.
The local Cowboys writers are pitiful. They couldn't see what was painfully obvious to all of the fans, that Norv was not what the Cowboys needed. All they wanted was the insides access to the locker room. Thank god Phillips is good for a lively press conference or they might just have kept on calling Phillips Mr. Fix-It.

Colts

thats ridiculous
unless you think the colts will be forever injury ridden. colts are way better than the packers and the steelers. the cowboys probably, because i think they match up well with the colts (as evidenced by last year) and I think they would beat the colts more times than not in a series.
by ab03 on Nov 11, 2007 10:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
last year was last year
Both teams have different personel today than last year. Thats the way I have them stacked up right now, could be different next week, kind of like the NCAA top 25.
