Cowboys vs. Packers: More stuff
The Cowboys gameplan on defense consisted of pressuring Brett Favre and making sure tackles on the receivers.
"You've got to make him throw the ball quick or he's going to throw the ball downfield," Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart said. "You've got to pick your poison. What we wanted to do was make him throw quick and try to tackle the throw, and that's what we did."
"We knew we had to come and pressure the quarterback defensively," defensive end Chris Canty said. "We were able to put enough pressure on the quarterbacks and disrupt the passing game."
And it wasn't just the sacks, either. Starting quarterback Brett Favre – who wasn't sacked – threw two interceptions as a result of the Cowboys' pressure.
Later, they had problems with Aaron Rodgers. I’ll have more about that in the film review this weekend. But they did get three sacks in the game, including a big one from Ware, who moved to double-digit sacks on the year with 10. But his partner in crime – Greg Ellis – got two and is now sitting at 10.5 sacks. I’m telling you, Ellis is playing some of the best ball of his career.

Here’s the odd stat of the year.
Like clockwork, the problem arises every three games. After playing two fairly clean contests, the Cowboys were assessed 10 penalties against the Packers. They also reached double digits three games ago against the Giants, six games ago against the Patriots and nine games ago against the Bears.
I guess every third week Wade should pass out one of those penalty pledges for all to sign.

Speaking of the Coach, the Cowboys are hoping that Wade’s approach this year keeps the team from any late-season collapses.
Wade Phillips' approach has been different. The Cowboys have practiced in pads less this year, especially lately while playing three games in 12 days. Phillips has rested players going all the way back to training camp, but that didn't mean the workload lessened. In some ways, in fact, Phillips' camps were just as demanding because he had more meetings than Parcells.
"We've got to see what we can do," James said. "Our preparation has to be more mental than physical."
Wade sure has this team playing well, it’s hard to imagine that they would collapse. But we have been cursed in December recently. Witten says they need to be aware of the possibility.
"We've got to address the issue," Witten said. "We're probably a little more fresh and all of things that go with that this year, but you've got to put an emphasis on it just because it's gone down the wrong way in the past."

OK, if anybody is doing a better job of covering the Cowboys right now than the Breerman, I haven’t found them. Go read his whole chat.

Don Banks on the Cowboys/Packers game. Banks highlights a play that has been truly underrated in that game.
The play of the game in my book? That 35-yard Tony Romo to Patrick Crayton pass on third-and-19 from the Dallas 11 late in the third quarter. Absolutely everything was going Green Bay's way in the previous quarter-plus before that momentum turner.

You know, Tony Romo broke the Cowboys single-season passing record for TD’s in the Packers game, and I didn’t even post about it. That’s partly because he’s going to obliterate the record by the end of the year. But anyway, a belated congrats to our resident playboy.

Ray Sherman – The T.O. Whisperer.
Cowboys receiver coach Ray Sherman — Phenomenal job of not only keeping Terrell Owens in check and feeling loved, but in helping Owens' consistency. Remember, just one year ago we were all wondering why this guy had so many drops. Sherman, a former long-time offensive coordinator, has Owens tearing up the league at a furious pace and, at the same time, propelling Patrick Crayton into a solid and dangerous option for Tony Romo. Sherman has long been respected by players, which was probably why Wade Phillips knew he'd be the perfect guy to keep Owens from repeating his soap operas of years past.
Maybe it wasn’t aliens after all.

Little T.O. is all growns up!
I am guessing he's got good people around him, giving him good advice, finally. He must have realized his career is winding down, or at least in the final stage when guys solidify their cases for the HOF, and perhaps a good chance for a SB ring.
I was 100% against his signing, but I have to say, even I've come around to see what a great player he is and that team cancer stuff is in his past (knock on wood).
Everyone is praising Moss and how he has found the right situation and he's a team player, but hey, everybody, there's a case to be made for our very own reformed wideout down in Big D.
I was right with you Tom...
And the beauty of Moss and the Pats getting all the attention is that it only serves to reinforce the simplest of messages: we can always get better.
At 11-1, it is a miracle that the media isn't spending every moment pumping up the players. Instead, it's more often "but they're not in the same league with the Patriots." This refrain was getting under my nerves until I realized it was a case of "be careful what you wish for" ... the reality is that media over-hype often undermines a team's focus.
Here's hoping the Cowboys get disrespected right up until game-time in Arizona. It would be just like 2002, when the over-hyped Rams were stunned by the up-and-coming Patriots.
man
I (like many others here) completely hated his guts while he was in Philadelphia. When he got here, I wasn't totally against it, but I had my doubts.
I'm glad to say those doubts are gone.
I think T.O. recognizes what he has around him. Truth be told, he's never had it this good. The 2004 Eagles were great, but not as good at the 2007 Cowboys.
The best part is....this team hasn't even peaked yet. :D

Speaking of Crayton...
Do you think he reads these blogs? Because I can't help but remember this question that Grizz was asked by Acme Packing Company during the "5 Questions" exchange...
WR Patrick Crayton missed last week, but apparently he will be starting on Thursday. Did the team miss him at all or do they only need him when they play St. Louis?
Open mouth, insert foot.
the difference in the 2007 Cowboys from 2006
Cowboys is really one thing and thats the coaching staff. I know this seems like I'm throwing Parcells under the bus, but it needs to be said that the job Phillips, Garrett, Stewart has done with this team is simply incredible, not to mention Ray Sherman handling T.O.
Romo's maturation has obviously helped and is a difference as well, but a lot of what Tony has been able to accomplish, as well as T.O. is because of Garrett.
Jones hiring Phillips and Garrett was a truly brilliant move and one that just might get him that elusive 4th SB title.
Couldn't agree more
They are all doing an amazing job. Let's not forget Sparano either, who has that offensive line playing great. Jerry found a great mix of coaches and personalities that seem to have unlocked the potential of many of our players. I don't think any of us drew it up this way after "the bobble," but that and the Parcells era feel like ancient history to me now.
The Third and nineteen
is one of those situations only a select few QBs can convert and we now have one. Pretty amazing.
you're absolutely correct
thats what makes Romo truly special, he just gets it done.
It reminds me of the quote from Jeef Goldblum in Jurassic Park, when they breed all the dinosaurs female so they couldn't reproduce and he says, "nature finds a way".
Thats like Tony, when we're up against it, and it doesn't look good, almost impossible, like in Buffalo, or that 3rd and 19, Romo always finds a way to get us downfield to score or put us in a position to score.
This kid is really special, I'm glad people are starting to finally realize that now.
Play of the game (3rd and 19)
If the 'Boys don't make that, I'm not sure they win the game.... any thoughts?
That's quite possible
because after the punt the Pack would have had excellent field position and momentum in their favor. Instead, the Dallas D stayed off the field, the Packers' defense stayed on, and the offense was able to start wearing them down.
The only thing I'd say against that theory is that Romo's offense seems remarkably immune to buckling under late game pressure. They still might have pulled out a win.
Didn't GB also suffer a meltdown vs Philly...
... in da playoffs a few years ago late in the 4th QTR?
I think McFlabb converted a 4th and like 25 yds and they completed a 29 yd pass play to Freddie Mitchell.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong?
That's right
There was a key 4th and very long that they converted. I think this was the year Philly went to the SB, but it could have been the year before.
Breerman has been excellent
since day one. He has little rhetoric and seems to do an excellent job of staying objective (which is the same reason I like Gizz's work). Football really is a lot more interesting when your not reading a circle jerk or a hatefest (I still can't stand the sight of Skip Bayless). The game is more interesting and the wins are also more satisfying.
I must say though that I would prefer Breerman to be an objective fan of the Cowboys as opposed to just an objective sportswriter.
Someone more like .... GRIZZ. Hooyah!

penalties
besides the rule of three, I see something else those games have in common.
Makes sense that in the big games, the cowboys get a little antsy. Also, pretty amazing that the cowboys have had to play big games every third game this year. each one of those games had top billing as a clash of the titans game. lots of regular season tests for a team...should help for the playoffs
