Cowboys wide recievers sure can make the 'news'

It’s time to talk about Dallas Cowboys wide receivers. Why not, everyone else is. Three Cowboys receivers, two current and one ex, are in the news today, and only one of them for the right reason. So we’ll start with the quietest of the bunch and frankly one of the quietest wide receivers to ever play the game, Terry Glenn.

T.G. went through a practice today, not a full practice but an individual workout, in his next step towards returning to the field for the Cowboys this year. We all know about the two knee surgeries he underwent before the season and how Dallas has kept a spot on the roster open for him all season. Now they’re hoping that faith will pay off as they try to ease Glenn back onto the gameday roster. Wade Phillips said it’s very unlikely he could play this week, but barring any setbacks, he could see the field next week against the Panthers. What a nice Christmas gift that would be for the organization and the fans.

We’ll have to wait to see how he responds to activity over the next few days and then see if he can go through full practices next week. I think the Cowboys will bring him along slowly, letting him settle in as the third receiver and keep as much pressure off that knee as possible. I could end up being wrong, maybe Wade throws him into the fire right away but that doesn’t really seem to be Wade’s style.  Either way, if Glenn can provide another serious option in the passing game, the Cowboys offense could start to rival the offense in New England.

Well, so much for the serious football news about our wide receivers. The other two Cowboys-affiliated receivers in the news are having a little spat that is as absurd as it is petty. I loathe giving it my attention here, but I can’t just ignore it like it’s not news. Although I grant you term ‘news’ is used very loosely here.

We might as well start at the beginning to unfold this messy pile of doo-doo. And that description is just about what it feels like I’m doing here, but here goes. It all started when Jerry Jones decided to sign Terrell Owens – a great decision as it turns out – and brought him to Dallas without any enthusiastic approval from Bill Parcells. We’ll never know exactly how that played out behind doors, but it became obvious Parcells wasn’t thrilled with it. He probably could have brought it to a stop or thrown a major monkey-wrench into the works but he didn’t. The upshot was that Keyshawn, T.O. and Terry Glenn were not going to all be on the same roster and the guy who had to go was Keyshawn. Technically, Keyshawn was released prior to the Owens signing, but it was obvious what was going on. So here we have Owens basically taking Keyshawn’s job and playing for a coach who loves Keyshawn and wasn’t enamored with Owens. Gee, any wonder there are a few testy feelings between this trio.

For most of Parcells one year with Owens, their relationship veered between casual indifference to simmering bitterness. If never boiled up over the surface but all the underlying tensions were there. Now, that season with Parcells is also the basis of the current kiddie-spat. It’s true that Parcells never utilized Owens as the central cog of the offense and that they could have done a lot more to feature him if they wanted to. They rarely moved him around to get better matchups and they didn’t run a lot of the patterns that are his specialties. It’s equally true they didn’t ignore him, he had 1,000 yards and led the league in TD catches. Equally culpable for not having a bigger year was T.O.’s penchant for dropping balls last year, sometimes on big plays. We also must remember that Drew Bledsoe was the QB for the opening five games and he would throw to Terry Glenn no matter what. So there were other things that kept T.O. from having this kind of year last year besides Parcells coaching. He also had the hurt finger for much of the season. So basically, both guys, Parcells and T.O. had issues that limited T.O.’s performance and they were just never going to be in sync.

Move on to this year and T.O. is having a fantastic season, he’s having no issues with the press and the Cowboys are 12-1 with the roster that Parcells basically built but it took Wade – and Jason Garrett – to finally unleash its total potential. All year the press – more specifically ESPN – picked and picked at T.O. to try and get him to say something about Parcells or about last year, basically they just wanted a story and T.O. wouldn’t give it to them. He deflected those questions by talking about this year’s coaching staff and this year’s team. But I guess it took Keyshawn’s big mouth to finally break T.O.’s will. He finally succumbed and unleashed a verbal assault back at Keyshawn. Here we are today, with Keyshawn admonishing T.O. to quit talking about Parcells and T.O. telling Keyshawn just where he sits on the WR pecking order, which isn’t nearly as high as Keyshawn thinks it is. And here I sit writing about a couple of knuckleheads polluting the airwaves.

Let me go to Keyshawn first, since he matters nothing to me relative to the Cowboys of ’07. I liked Keysahwn when he played in Dallas, he would block for the run, he would make big 3rd-down catches and he wasn’t afraid to go over the middle. He was a tough receiver and I loved it. Still, I wasn’t confused that he was an elite receiver. His reputation was bigger than he was and his own ego was bigger than his reputation. He just didn’t have the physical skills that an Owens, Moss, Harrison, or Holt possessed. He just wasn’t as good as the elite. And that’s just on the playing field. His hypocrisy at ESPN is so blinding that I recommend sunglasses and a good B.S. detector when watching him. His lecturing receivers on the correct way to act is like getting parenting advice from Britney Spears. Just stop it, Keyshawn. You’re not fooling anybody. We know you were divisive, a diva, had an ego that outweighed your talents, and basically no coach could stand you except for Parcells. It’s no wonder that you go to extremes to protect him; he’s the only guy who will talk about you in terms of greatness. On a side-note, I don’t think there was anything particularly wrong with what Keyshawn said about T.O., that he should just ignore the Parcells questions. I agree, who cares about that anyway. Not the 12-1 Cowboys. But I understand the frustration of being lectured by a huge hypocrite.

Over to T.O., everything he’s been saying about Parcells, Wade and even what he said about Keyshawn today was mostly true. And nothing about it was very controversial. But this is the exact kind of stuff he needs to stay away from. T.O.’s focus on football and his team has paid off big dividends this year. I would hate to see him get distracted by trivial stuff like this incident. The second thing is once you give them a little they are going to come back for a lot. In that I mean the press - a juicy quote from T.O. is like chum in the water for ESPN. It’s a network that isn’t interested in discussing football; you should watch the NFL Network’s AFC/NFC Playbook show for stuff like that. ESPN is interested in personalities and controversies. To them, the old T.O. is the goose that laid the golden egg and they will do anything to get that going again. Don’t let them T.O., ignore their constant Parcells questions, just keep on praising Wade and Romo and let your play on the field do the talking. Get back in the pod, T.O. At least until the season is over.

T.O. probably should have ignored the questions

However it is easy for us to judge.

Last year he had a coach who showed him very little respect to the point that he wouldn't even call T.O. by his name, or even be present at his contract signing (sort of childish on Parcells part).

Fast foward to this year.  T.O. is the model citizen has done everything right on and off the field, and is the big reason for our current success.  But you have people to continue to criticize T.O. every time he takes a doody.

Grizz something you forgot to mention is how T.O. lavished praise on Wade Phillips.  T.O. has obviously grown very fond of Wade, and in his own sort of way he tries to defend him against the brain dead media who tries to portray Wade as an average puppet of a coach who has stumbled on a pot gold, and everything that is going right this year has very little to do with what he has done.

So with all of that what you saw today was T.O.'s frustration boil over.  And I don't think any of us can blame him for that.  He is only human, and definitely not a pod-person. ;)

While we're on the subject

I find it very ironic that many of the members of the media that minimize Wade's accomplishments and praise Parcells for constructing this roster also picked teams such as Philly and New York to win the AFC East and say things like "the Packers are still the best team in the NFC."  Which is it, guys?

You know what?  Nevermind.  Keep hating, sports media.  It helps us.

I am copying this from the diary about TO vs Key

The nature of being a fan is to be in the here and now.  Key was a good reciever for us, owens is great.  Parcells was a great talent scout and a good head coach, Phillips is a great one.  They both deserve their place in cowboys history but what ruffled Owens feathers so much was the percieved disrespect towards Phillips saying that he is just gravy training off of Parcells' awesome moves and I agree.  I also agree that TO was under utilized last year and Parcells is to blame for that.  Burt, though I may not go as far as you saying "Parcells is scum" - I feel where you are coming from.  I understand he did great things but I am so sick of hearing about his Hall of Fameness (just invented that) when the truth is, his team underachieved so much that it became painful to watch and all his "hilarious" sarcasm in the press conferences just pissed me off.

TO has been a jerk in a lot of his stops along the way but there is no way we are where we are today without him and that - if you are a true Dallas Cowboy fan - is what matters.  People who try to attack player's character are full of doody.  I don't want TO to teach my kid ethics, just catch a bunch of touchdowns and give me smack talking rights to my friends.

I don't even like TO, and I agree with him on

this!

I don't like him, ever since the "Star" incident; I didn't want him on the team, I'll never "like" him, and when he leaves, I'll breathe a sigh of relief.

He's an arrogant, self-centered, egotisical modern day athelete, in fact he epitomizes it, if he didn't help invent it!

That said, I agree with TO on this issue.

Keyshawn is everything TO is, and maybe worse, becuase Keshawan, unlike TO, rarely, if EVER, backed his BS up on the field!

That's the ultimate sin of the modern day athelete prima donna!

The Michael Vick's, to a certain extent Reggie Bush, the Keyshawn's, the John Kitna's, stupid, likker'ed up kickers like Vander-jag-off, etc...

Talk BS and crap, act like 13 year old spoiled idiots, all hype, never back it up!

TO, despite all his many and numerous and in-you-face faults, at least can play!

As for Parcells, the HAPPIEST day I've ever had a as a 40-year-Dallas Cowboy's fan, was the day Parcells left!

Game over, Parcells the idiot is gone, Keyshawn the idiot is gone, Bledsoe the idiot is gone, and we've got Wade and TO and Romo, and we're a BETTER team for it!

Parcells and Keyshawn can pound sand....

Sorta..

Irvin was, and is an "ass"!

No doubt!

I was in Dallas during those years, and Irvin was univerally disliked by people that were around the Club, but not "insiders".

He was universally called an "ass"!

That said, you know what, he was a performer, and though completely idiotic and self-destructive, he was NOT in the mold of Randy Moss & TO, and was a Team and Team-mate Destroyer!

Everyone who ever played with him, has said he was the natural, firey leader of that team, who worked his butt off like no other, set the tone and led by example on the field, in practice, etc.

So, "like" Irvin; no, not really!

But I draw a clear, Clintonesque "line" between the way Irvin was, than team-renderers, me-me-me types like TO, Vick, Moss, etc.

Irvin was all about "team" on the field, in and practice, of that there is no doubt.

A bunch of these "modern" clowns, not even close!

This is my deal with T.O.

I genuinely think he is a good person.  He has never been in trouble with the law (like a certain other 81) and despite his antics throughout the years he has been a model citizen.  T.O. used to be very immature, but I think he has grown up.

I want to see a

play with T.O. and Austin on one side with Glenn and Crayton on the other side. That would be a nightmare for defense to cover. Two home run threats with two physical receivers. That would be a great play and just for fun throw in Sam Hurd in there.

Does anyone realize?

Bill Parcells hasn't been on a championship team in 17 years ?..... and even that was a lucky "Wide Right" victory, as the Bills were a far better team.......I'm not going to get deep into this..cuz what has been done is done...and it kills me to think of it...I , for one, was not in favor of having Tuna as our coach. He was never creative, always hated his belittling coaching tactics, and his need of having his own persona being the face of the team.

He is only known for turning teams from from mediocre, to contenders....NOT champions.....Thanks for holding the fort Tuna, we have established a team of unity here and we don't need you. IMO , you have failed in your quest here, and Wade is more than capable to guiding us to the promised land. As long as Parcells was coach of our team, we would not of been in this position...I truely believe that..

And for that washed up bum Meshawn..shut your mouth, you might as well crawl under the table on the ESPN set, and unzip Papa Tuna's trousers.

Does anyone else go nuts and crack a big smile when you see Wade on the sidelines rootin' his boys on, and flallin his arms with excitement?????.....I LOVE that....He's the guy I'd go to war for.

True Cowboys diehard since 1975.

I think the people in New York

would tell you that Parcells turned a couple of teams into champions. I guess some people know him for that. And did you realize that Tom Landry didn't win a championship in his first 11 years or his last 11 years? I'm just saying.

But I get you didn't like his persona, some people didn't.

Say what you will about Parcells

But he was clearly the best coach this team had, before Wade, since Jimmy Johnson.  If you want to talk about circumstantial evidence (as is being discussed in the diary), how about the fact that we had a long playoff absence and weak drafts every year until Parcells arrived.  He didn't take us all the way, but he sure as hell helped turn this organization around out of its downward spiral.  Or maybe it was just a total coincidence that we started bringing in real players at that point.  And, while I don't like to make these kinds of arguments and have tried my best to forget about this, he had us pretty close to winning a playoff game last year.

Wade is a far better coach for this team right now, but at least Parcells helped "buy the groceries", so to speak.  That's more than can be said for his predecessors.

I liked Parcells more as a talent evaluator of defensive players... not as a game-day head coach.

That is why

he will do good in a GM position.  As a coach, in his own words, you are what your record says you are.  Our record said we were an OK team, so he is an OK coach.  I too was thrilled when he left town.

Parcells would make a great GM

But I wonder if he could get along with his head coach, he seemed like he wanted to control EVERYTHING, and that would put his HC in an uncomfortable position.

Thanks not saying much,...

look at his competition:

Switzer (Buffoon)...
Chan Gailey (fired by Ga Tech, nuff said..)
Dave Campo (midget puppet clown)

Then Parcells?

Silver said it; decent evaluator of talent; terrible "modern" day HC and terrible Game Day Coach!

IF Parcells is still HC this year, even WITH Jason Garrett, they're lucky to be 8 - 5!

by Dale in Atlanta on Dec 12, 2007 9:49 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

slight modification

terrible game day coach and not so great at drawing up plays, but great intangibles coach.  I think the guy understood football way better than any of the previous guys we had and therefore, he knew how to take a young inexperienced team and give them confidence through discipline.  I get the feeling that before parcells, this team didn't practice situations, like 2 minute drills, at all.

Campo

I was laughing about your description, but at the same time I felt bad about it. He was coach of some of the worst Cowboy teams ever partly because of the salary cap hell we ended up in.

i agree with everything you said

but one thing is T.O. is who he is - he's going to need to speak out.  I have to say that in work situations, I'm kind of the same way.  So, while this toes the line a bit, I don't mind that the crux of the message he is sending is give Wade credit.  But you're right, leave all that other stuff out of it.

STOP CALLING T.O. OUT

This is a great blog, but I think you would be very annoying if you kept calling me a pod person. I dont think Owens enjoys it either. Maybe he reads, maybe he doesnt, but the media already piles it on the guy, whats up with you calling him a pod. As for Keyshawn, what a loser he is, and he is probably doing it for some suit at espn. We should all be behind Owens, since he is the one who will lead us to the promise land. Yeah, Parcells built this team, but the most important part as of now is Owens and Romo, and he kept sorry ass bledsoe in there forever and he didnt even want Owens. He drafted spears and carpenter who both blow. He paid rivera, who sucked ass. Wade was here and embraced owens, an got leonard davis, and let romo throw the damn ball and took witten out of blocking and got him open. Go wade, go owens! I am a die hard cowboys fan, and these guys are who I am a fan of. Key and Tuna can blow me!

The pod person remarks

are just a playful way of commenting upon what a mature team player TO has become in the past year.  It's actually a compliment on what a positive transformation he has made.  It's clear that he needed to be in a supportive environment and be surrounded by coaches who can keep him involved and engaged.  While that might sound a lot like coddling, he's demonstrated that he's worth it, and I think that philosophy has boosted the morale of other players on this team, too.

TO's response to Keyshawn's comments is proof of this.  He sounded like he was ready to throw down because someone didn't give his coaches enough credit.  You gotta admit, before this year, he would have been unrecognizable doing such a thing.

Sad so many 13 year olds were up then

Dale in atlanta and the rest of the whiny types.

BP taught Jerrah what it means to really evaluate talent and not jump at shiny new faces.

He got rid of Lacewell and put Ireland in place.

He took a team of losers and into the playoffs his first year- WITH Q AND HAMBONE.
THINK about that.
HOW many players are left from that team?
Hotel, Roy, Gurode, Ellis.

I could go on but why bother.

Ok Cowboys fans

You fans like Dale in Atlanta.  Ok, you may not have liked Parcells.  However, I'll point this out.  I found this link with the players who played during 2002.  That's the roster Bill Parcells inherited.

http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/ro...

For giggles, here's the 2003 roster.  Parcells made some tweaks but most are what he started with.

http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/ro...

Take a look at that roster & then play a game of how many are even still in the league.  Shall we name such gems as Quincy Carter?  Troy Hambrick?  Pete Hunter?  Eric Bickerstaff?  Remember all those who bitched & moaned when Parcells sent Antonio Bryant away?  Then Jerry brought in Drew Henson?  Any of those names strike bells?

So I respectfully submit this link.  2007's roster.

http://www.dallascowboys.com/team_ro...

Let's look at some of the names on that roster, put there by Bill Parcells.  Chris Canty.  Marion Barber.  Patrick Crayton.  DeMarcus Ware.  Jason Witten.  Not to mention his showing Greg Ellis that he could, indeed, play a different position.  Oh yes.  And one other fellow Parcells (yes, dispute it all you want--it was Parcells who brought him & kept him, despite many calls from fans & blogs & local sports reporters to trade him) brought in.  Fellow named Tony Romo.  Ever heard of him?  The QB that Parcells kept pushing, ignoring all the screaming to start Drew Henson, the screams to trade away Romo & make room for someone else.  The same fellow who's now considered one of the best QBs in the league.

You may not like the guy, but if you're at all a rational fan, you have to admit he put together a pretty good set of groceries for your team.  Or to use another metaphor, he was handed a Pinto & turned it into a Ferrari.  Like it or not, Wade Phillips was handed the keys to a Ferrari.  To his credit, he's got it running nicely at the front of the (NFC) pack.  But it was PARCELLS who put that Ferrari together--driven by Tony Romo.  That's the simple fact.  Parcells put this team together.  Dungy put together Gruden's Super Bowl team.  Jimmy Johnson put together Switzer's Super Bowl team.  Those are the facts.  And that's what Key pointed out.  (You ask yourself, deep down, whether Wade Phillips would have put together the same team had he inherited that 2002 team.)

And, just as an FYI & because it gets brought up so often--Parcells NEVER showed at any player's introduction.  He didn't show at the PC introducing Drew Bledsoe, FYI.  He ALSO referred to Bledsoe as "The Player" when talking about him.  I realize that Parcells haters always like to overlook those little tidbits, because it makes it so much easier to bash him, but that's the way he operated.  He didn't show at players' PCs because he wanted it to be Jerry's show & because he didn't want players to get swelled heads.  (You may pooh pooh that, but then you might want to repeat the name "Michael Vick" to yourself a couple of times as a reminder of what happens when players get overly coddled.  Maybe it's not a bad thing for a coach not to kiss ass all the time.)

And I'll say one more thing.  Everything is hunky dory this year with TO.  All is love & sweetness & wonderfulness & "I'm so happy to be here."  He's happy & his QB is throwing him lots of balls.  He's on Sports Center every week with lots of catches.  Just like it was in Philadelphia in year one.  And this is, in effect, year one for TO, under a new coach.  Plus, in his mind, he "won" in a power struggle with Parcells.  To his way of thinking, Jerry took his side & brought in a coach whose primary job is to placate him.  So far it's working.  But just remember that the Eagles also bent over backwards to keep him happy.  The QB threw lots of balls to him.  They had a great season.  Coasted to the Super Bowl.  All was love & wonderfulness & happiness.

Just keep that in the back of your minds.  Maybe things will be different this time.  Maybe.  It's always easy to convince yourselves when it's your team.  Maybe Bobby Petrino will stay with the Razorbacks for his full contract.  Maybe.

Quick correction

I realize that THIS is the link I needed to post.  The 2006 roster.  Most of whom are on the 2007 roster.

The cold hard fact remains that Parcells created the majority of your winning roster--including your QB.  Deal with it.  Again, he may not have had the success you wanted, but he put that roster in place.  And I defy you to name me another coach (including Wade Phillips) who would have had the same results.

He didn't have results
that was the problem...same team as last year...wade trumps him with the same talent.

Bill parcells was a .500 coach. I don't care how much talent he amassed,he was too ignorant to use it in a way the conveyed success!

Parcells early success with a weak roster

That set him back 2 years while he was here. He decided to see what he had in year one, and somehow we make the playoffs. Then he's kind of stuck, well they were good enough to make the post season, can't just blow the team up. Next season their true colors show and they bottom out at 6-10. 2 years he could have been into the rebuilding process, wasted.

Then he blows up the roster and loads it up with most of our current players. His biggest mistake was not sitting Bledsoe sooner and handing the team over to Romo last season. That is a perfect example of his inflexibility that also wore down our defense and caused the late season slide.

It was just a combination of circumstances that led to him not getting the Boys closer to the SB, which ironically they are this season. So here's to Bill for buying the groceries and teaching the players how to do things the right way.
