Cowboys win a hard-fought game over Panthers 20-13, T.O. injured
I’m satisfied with that win. It wasn’t the offensive juggernaut for the whole game that I hoped for, although when Terrell Owens was playing we moved the ball and put 17 points on the board. We also ran the ball well. Going on the road in the NFL is never easy and coming away with a win after losing your star receiver is a show of character. We had a few bad patches on offense where we left points on the board but the big problem was the loss of T.O.
Hot topics:
Tony Romo’s thumb – It looks like he’s OK with the thumb. He threw the ball well and was pretty accurate. It didn’t look like he was having any problems to me, so I’m putting that one to bed unless something pops up this week.
Terrell Owens’ ankle – Yikes. We really, really need the Bears to beat the Packers this week so we don’t have to worry about it next weekend. If we need a win next week and have to go without T.O., I am worried. One good thing, T.O. is a fast healer with his super-duper hyperbolic chamber and all. We need him full-strength for the playoffs.
MB3 – What a great game. The Cowboys need to quit messing around and give MB3 the ball. He was a man on a mission and he performed like a Pro-Bowler.
The defense – Except for some problems handling Steve Smith, they played well. We had issues getting pressure early but turned it on in the second half. Our front seven dominated their line.
Offensive line – Romo wasn’t sacked. MB3 went over 100 yards. That says it all. Nice job for Cory Procter, too. Besides the penalty, he did a good job.

That can't be because he does so much on the
field and he makes so many game changing plays he is surely missed whenever he is not on the field.

Keith Davis missed the tackle on Smith's bomb
and had at least three other missed tackles on plays in the game. He had a good pass breakup at the end that was huge, and had another pass breakup earlier in the game. He only had one tackle from the strong safety position. I think he had a good game for a backup, but nothing to make me not want Roy back in.

our front seven did a good job
so there weren't a whole lot of tackles to be made in the run game. But yeah I think Roy may have done just as a good a job, although I am not sure he would have made that crucial pass break up.

Our front seven was really good
Tank Johnson came to life in this game.

Yeah, on the sack of Moore (da penalty one)...
...did you see the combo of quick feet and power to get around/past the Carolina center?
I hope he becomes a constant force, for it would only add to an already strong front seven. I'm salivating of the thought of Tank in the middle with Rat and Canty at the ends on certain passing situations...

hopefully those will be our starters at those
respective positions next year after we trade away Spears.

he would have definitely played better than Davis

and just looking at Roy's stats
he has had at most 1 PD in a game, and has had 5 PD's all year. So if Keith Davis had two in one game, I think he put forth an admirable effort.

I did!
I like Davis OK, but Roy is the guy leading the team in tackles, and making another Probowl. Steve Smith still went over 100 yds (at least no one can blame that one on Roy)

Nope
He's just an Achilles heal that needs to be cut as soon as possible.

Depends on who blew the coverage and backup
on Smith's big reception.

I'm just talking about missing a tackle
Not the coverage, you have to make that tackle.

Matt Moore did OK.
The guy has a rocket. I really thought that he would be rattled, but he threw only one INT and didn't fumble when sacked.
It's only his second game, and he didn't go to training camp with Carolina. You've got to like the kid. Too bad we let him go.

I am puzzled by JJ
and finally ready to proclaim him gone after this year. You have to wonder about the way he has been used if some of that isn't about the contract but at his point, unless he pulls a Seattle in the 1st playoff game, I would rather have another back to depend upon. JJ just does not throw his body into the fray like MB3. We should use up most running backs in 4-5 years and I do not want us to go to a featured back system again. The platooning produces better results and less risk imo.

Agreed, but
I for the life of me can't figure out what happened to Tyson Thompson.
I for one would have gotten the kid more reps than he's received up to this point. But that's coming from a guy who doesn't see a need to keep JJ around next year and therefore would have wanted to get more of a look-see at TT.
Just my opinion, but I think TT can average 3 ypc like JJ...

He would havce gotten Romo killed. His blitz pick-up was terrible. It' one the things that kept him off the field under the Tuna and I think probably under this regime as well.
by dunkman on Dec 23, 2007 7:19 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I wasnt thinking about
blitz pick up when I posted that comment last night but TT's blitz pick up skills are bad. He might have improved from last year but we haven't seen much of him so he is kind of a mystery at this point.

There was another criticism
of him as well, but I can't recall it. I believe it has to do with reading the defense and running to the right place.

And in The Breerman Blog...
... the excerpts below reflect the humble character of the stud wearing #24:
"The O-line played well, the team played together, I’m glad we came out on top," Barber said. "Now, we got to go get the last one."
No lie, Barber was asked about his personal performance four times. Each answers started with "The O-line played well." The only question that wasn't answered that when he talked about the team's character in bouncing back.
"Great guys, great group of guys," Barber said. "We all work hard and I think it’s all gonna pay off."
The ultimate warrior is also the ultimate team player...

Speaking of Romo (needed segue, see Grizz above)
I just read a true, but funny little anecdote by Matt Mosley over at ESPN.com's Hashmarks.
Check it out (here's a snippet... the rest of the blog post can be found at the link -- http://myespn.go.com/profile/hashmar...
At one point last night, Cowboys kicker Nick Folk, punter Mat McBriar, linebacker Bobby Carpenter, quarterback Tony Romo, tight end Jason Witten and quarterback Vinny Testaverde were all dining at Capital Grille in downtown Charlotte.
According to an eyewitness report, a waitress walked over to a table and said, "Isn't that Nick Folk?"
You have to respect any waitress that is more excited about meeting Folk than Romo.
Man, is that "Folked" up or what?!?!

crazy thoughts...
ok here goes..lets say parcells grabs sprarono which i dont think he'll do but well just say he does. jeff ireland loves the cowboys and who would you rather work for a screemer/ dont talk to me on mondays kind of guy or a chillaxed wade and jerry jones..and if parcelles is crazy enough to fire cam cameron we could grap the yin to wades yang..so if garrett is dumb enough to leave and we get the chanch to snatch up cameron were stoked.. even if parcells fires cam and we keep garrett and sparono i think the move of the future is to snag cam...same stile as norv/zampezey/garrett..we are in so many ways to win here it just keeps getten better....

Anyone nte the "TO Effect"?
As soon as he was out, it was a lot more 8 in the box. We'll see a bunch of that until Owens is on the field... unless Glenn can actually stage a comeback.

Bitter irony
If TG can start next week then his first game back will be the first game TO misses. Oh cruel fate, how you mock us..

Which Was Worse Saturday Night?
Watching TO limp off the field and into the X-ray room or the top-to-bottom piss poor NFL Network coverage - from the borderline retarded Bryant Gumbel to cutaway interviews that overlapped gameplay?
The NFL Network needs to fire everyone from top to bottom and start all over. Rich Eisen, Deon Sanders, and all the idiots on the sidelines were almost as lousy as Gumbel.

The coverage definetely sucked
On the first play of the game, they were focused on Patrick Crayton when the ball was snapped, so we completely missed the fumbled snap. Who decided on that shot to open the game?

Haha yes
From the first play, one could tell that it was going to be the usual lackluster NFLNetwork effort.
Observations:
We've given up big running games to four teams in a row, after holding everyone-even AP- to very limited numbers. This is especially worrisome considering that we might have to play the Bucs, Giants, Packers... even next week, the Skins.
It's tough to make plays when you're missing TWO 1000 yard receivers. Tony's terrific, but he's not superman.
There is absolutely no reason to bring JJ back next year. In fact, I don't know if I'd condone spending a first rounder on a running back-MB is good enough that he could comfortably eat up 70-80% of the carries this team needs and produce like he is now. Jamaal CHarles would be a perfect fit here... quick, elusive, and a projected 2nd or 3rd rounder. Too bad he's staying at UT.
This defense has really stepped it up during the last two weeks. Remember how everyone kept saying that what made GB better than us was the fact that their defense could keep them in games when their offense faltered, whilst ours could not?
So much for that notion. They're now listed as an average defensive team, we've held teams to 23 points in the last two weeks while piling up close to 10 sacks.
Ratliff is a beast. When did this transformation occur?
The Tank Johnson signing was a terrific move. That roughing the passer call was BS, he was just hyped up and hit Moore harder than he should have. That wasn't a deliberate attempt to cripple or destroy.
I'd like to see more deep plays to Austin. I realize that the two passes in GB were both pass interferences, but there was a reason the defender got called for em. He realized that Austin had a very good chance of making the play and acted rashly. The dude's got speed, we need to harness it when we're missing playmakers like TO and TG.
Here's a name to watch on our draft board next year: Kenny Phillips. Let's just say I didn't really feel Roy's absence. If we can dump him, we should do so in a heartbeat.

Another quick note
With Newman healthy, there's no way Smith burns us like he did. If you recall the period of time not too long ago when he was terrorizing everyone and anyone... we faced off against the Panthers, and he went out purring as opposed to roaring and dancing in the endzone. T-New is his counter, his weakness, his kryptonite, his Dwyade.
SOrry if people missed the Mavs reference, but GOD I HATE THE HEAT AND THE FACT THAT THEY'RE NOW TERRIBLE MAKES ME SO PLEASED.
They have the trophy...

Cowboys are just a good team without T.O.
Romo and T.O. make this team special, enabling us to compete with any team in the league and the v ery best in the NFC. Without either one, this team will struggle against even bad teams.
I think that was evident against the Panthers. Glenn will help when he gets back, but nobody draws double teams like T.O. We will really struggle next week to beat the Skins without T.O. If he doesn't get hurt, we would have blown out the Panthers easily, by at least 3 TDs, but without him, we looked like a very ordinary offense and we'll continue to do so until he comes back.

I agree with Terry
TO is THAT good.
by Longhorn on Dec 23, 2007 11:06 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
It takes an excellent receiver to demand a double almost every snap, and TO does more than just open up the rest of the field. Even when he's the focus he has the ability to break a game open. The team needs him back for the playoffs if they are going anywhere but home.

Does anyone else hate it when...
...Crayton hesitates on returns after he catches it, then barely gets three yards on the play?
What about after Carolina's final three points of the game when he fielded the punt at about the 10 yd line and just stood there with the ball for like two seconds before moving, and he got tackled at like the 13 yard line?
Why the heck is he a returner? Crayton pisses the hell out of me some times.
I hope next year we draft a decent corner who can also return punts. I absolutely detest Patrick Crayton returning anything.

romo..
i saw him overlook some wide open people, i think T.O. being out will help him because he'll have to look around the field a little more, and they can get the younger guys more involved...by the time the playoffs come around he might be even more complete..and our o-line might actually get to run block for more of the game....
by hashishkabob on Dec 23, 2007 6:14 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
thats not true
T.O. isn't Tony's first option every pass, he always does a great job of going through his reads and progressions.

true...but...
i think he's used to t.o.s speed so if he can get the timing down with the other guys he'd be better off...but it doesnt matter because he'll sit against the redskins ...so doesn't matter...but i still think it will make him better because he's like one of those monkeys, just keeps going until he gets it right... our #9 silverback..feed him bits of cheese and he's happy....
