Dallas Cowboys crushed by Washington Redskins, 27-6
Well, there’s not much need of a recap for this one. Let me sum it up this way – Dallas was awful, the Redskins were dominant.
We got our bootays handed to us. Time to put this one in the trash compactor and move on to the serious business of the playoffs. Feel free to blow off some steam if you need to in this thread but try to keep your heads. Wait until the playoffs before jumping off the bandwagon. Sure, we’ve been playing mediocre ball over the last few weeks, but I’m keeping the faith. Once the playoffs begin, you never know how teams will play.
Yeah, I wanted us to play better. I don’t like watching us play like that but the playoffs are a different thing altogether. We had nothing to play for and we didn’t have some of our better players in the game. Washington had everything to play for and they were at home, so I expected them to play well. And they did, very well.
I’m concerned, but I still believe we will play well in the playoffs.

So...
Is this an invitation to vent?
I'm very, very disappointed.
- Our intensity was non-apparent.
- We got owned on both O-line and D-line.
- Receivers could not get open.
- Our secondary was porous.
Since this is becoming a trend, I am very concerned about us in the playoffs.
Can anyone convince me not to be concerned? (please)

Adding to Luther's list...
- Did we set a record for "three-and-outs" in a game?
- Jacques Reeves sucks.
- How many passes did our receivers drop?
- Jacques Reeves sucks.
- How many passes were thrown poorly?
- Jacques Reeves sucks.
- Why can't our run-blocking create holes and creases on a consistent basis... a today and a season-long problem?!?!
- Jacques Reeves sucks.

I still have faith in the team
but that flat-out stunk. Period.
For the sake of my own sanity, I'll go into Super Rose-Colored-And-Scented Glasses mode and blame it on the rain and injured players.

well said Grizz, everyone can come off the ledge
The Cowboys will regroup, get healthy and refocused for the playoffs, they are too talented of a team not to.
This game meant absolutely nothing to us and everything to the skins. The result was neither surprising or disconcerning to me.
Playoffs are a whole different season and I have all the confidence in the world they will come out and play well and win the SB.

Glass half full perspective
I share your faith.
Yes, they are excuses, but we can make them for this game.
Playoffs:
- Two weeks to rest
- Home field advantage
- T.O., Gurode, Newman, Ratliff hopefully all back in, along with Glenn
- Intensity of the playoffs to sharpen the focus for the team to play up to their potential, which we all know is awesome

"I'll take those"
I can't shake the image of Jerry snatching the headset in that overplayed commercial. Did Jerry start calling his own plays?
Garret and Wilson were calling some good games up to the Packers game. Some half-time adjustments were always needed but Garrett was getting some good pub. and the Boys were scoring at-will.
These last 3 games went conservative IMO. In 12 quarters, the Cowboys have only scored 3 TDs, 6 FGs.

It stings but lets look on the bright side
How many teams got to say they clinched homefield before the last week of the playoffs. Heck not even the cowboys of the 90s if my memory serves me correct.
Reasons to be happy:
- TO and Glenn on the same field
a)think randy moss and wes welker are scary wait for this.
- They will be at home and everything to play for.
- Its go big or go home and you saw romo on the sidelines upset. Hes too much of a competor to not fix this.

Touchdowns dropped by Austin
Another thing to consider...
There was suckiness all over the field today, true, but...
Two touchdowns were dropped by Miles Austin, who is our what, 5th Receiver?
Two TD catches, including one on the last play for Romo, would have changed the complexion of the game and our perception of it now (even if we still lost).
Thinking how that might provide some solace.

If You Have Players on a Football Field
They need to be mentally sharp, and need to play hard. It's one thing to rest your starters, as Seattle and Green Bay did today. It's another for a team to simply give up, like we did.
History is not kind to teams that fade down the stretch in the regular season.

Just some thoughts on the Cowboys right now
Watching this game is really making me mad, maybe pissed off beyond comprehension is a little better term as to how I feel right now.
Wade Phillips - Way to motivate this team Wade! He better show up at the post game press conference and explain a few things to Cowboys Nation. Why is Tony Romo out there is a muck with :00 seconds left on the first half game clock? That was nothing but stupid! Try the FG and then get into the locker room and get Romo out of harms way! Now explain to me why Jason Witten is back in the game when it's 27-3 with less than 10 minutes to play? Another genius move by Wade. Let me tell you this Wade Phillips - you better not lose this first playoff game or Jason Garrett will be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys next season.
The Offensive Line - When you get your checks this week you should immediately give them to a good charity because you did not show up today. Pathetic that 'professional' football players can't motivate themselves to at least 'show up' for every freaking game on the schedule. Marion Barber needed 19 yards toddy to break 1000 for the season and you bums didn't even come close in helping him get it!
Jacques Reeves - This kid sucks! Whoever starts rambling on about how he is getting better is just being a complete homer. The kid wasn't any good before the season began and he hasn't gotten any better after starting all these games this season. There better be some serious talent evaluation going on at the CB position in Free Agency and for the 2008 draft because Henry, when he plays, isn't much better than Reeves in my opinion.
Roy Williams - Let's beat the dead horse some more just for fun. The man is a target for every single offensive coordinator that has to play the Dallas Cowboys. No, I have no answer on what to do with him and if any other team wants him at this point.
Terry Glenn - Why did he even dress for this game when the weather was this bad? He should have just sat and waited for the playoff game before getting back into action.
The Redskins - They will lose in Seattle next week so they might as well do all that cheering and smiling this week. The Seahawks will bring the pass rush and Hasselbeck will be throwing the ball all over that field in the Holmgren West Coast offense. That Safety filling if for Sean Taylor is going to be exposed big time by the time that game is over.
Team heading into the playoffs - How could anyone be confident about this teams play over the last month. The offense has looked out of sync and mediocre at best. I really hope T.O. can get a few days of practice in before the first playoff game. Of course I am over reacting today after this loss and rightfully so. I didn't expect this team to win today, but I did expect them to show up and at least try to win. Let's hope today's disaster doesn't linger and create any lack of confidence for this team.

Terry Glenn is an easy one to answer...

Are you referring to Terry Glenn?
by DCFanatic on Dec 30, 2007 7:13 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Correct me if I'm wrong
but your asking why Terry Glenn was in the game. The answer to that and it's been well documented all week was for him to knock some of the rust off. Knowbody was expecting great things from him today, but he needed to get back on the field, not wait until the playoffs.
by Cowboys81 on Dec 30, 2007 7:41 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
So tell me this...
How important is a stupid completions record anyway.
As for Witten, he wasn't gonna have more than 1 catch from where they had the ball.
So tell me where I wasn't paying attention?
by DCFanatic on Dec 30, 2007 7:16 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It's not
but I think Wade needed to get some of the players time on the field. There is only 45 players on the active game day roster so starters have to play.
If the offense was more effective MB3, Witten and Romo would've been sitting the pine alot sooner. MB3 only needed 17 yards and Romo 8 completions. That could've been done in the first quarter in normal situations.
The Redksins had everything to play for and we didn't is what it amounts to. This was the Redskins SuperBowl. Mickey said this was the most important game for the Redskins in 11 years the Redskins players were saying before the game.
by Cowboys81 on Dec 30, 2007 7:47 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Do You Seriously Believe
This game was more important than the divisional playoffs against Seattle two years ago? Or the 1999 divisional playoffs?
The Redskins went into the second round both years. This year, they just made the playoffs. No way this game was more important than the other two.
That comment isn't a serious one.
by kindablue on Dec 30, 2007 7:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Than your calling Mickey Spagnola a lier
think about what you are saying before you say it. Mickey spoke to the Washington media guys and players before the game.
Why would this game mean so much for the Redskins??
Here is a clue: They win and they are in the playoffs and the most important reason.
Sean Taylor.
That's why they are so motivated to make the playoffs. They dedicated the rest of the season to him.
by Cowboys81 on Dec 30, 2007 7:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You Misunderstood My Comment
No one called Mickey Spagnola a liar, so try to calm down and pay attention to what I actually said.
I said that the comment was not a serious one, and there's nothing controversial about that. Regardless of Sean Taylor's death, the purpose of a football team is to win the Super Bowl. And there were two instances in the last 11 years where they not only made the playoffs, but advanced to the second round.
Saying that making the playoffs is more important than winning a playoff game is just silly. I'm sure the Redskins were trying to inflate the importance of this game, but the reality is it doesn't measure up to the other two more important games.
And saying it was important because of Sean Taylor is a red herring. If he meant so much to them, why didn't the Redskins win the game they dedicated to him, which was the Buffalo game?
It's just post game posturing, and not hard to see through, unless you try to misunderstand what I said originally.

Last 20 Super Bowl Winners
Have played well down the stretch. The Colts last year were the worst, but even then they won their last game. Here's a list of the winning streaks Super Bowl winners carried into the playoffs.
2006 1
2005 5
2004 2
2003 12
2002 1
2001 6
2000 7
1999 0 (Rams won seven straight games by 10+ points prior to that)
1998 1
1997 1
1996 5
1995 2
1994 0 (49ers won five straight prior to that)
1993 5
1992 2
1991 0 (Redskins won three straight prior to that)
1990 2
1989 5
1988 0 (49ers won four straight prior to that)
1987 1
So, the last 20 Super Bowl winners either won one or more games going into the playoffs; or else they had a good winning streak that ended with a loss on the last game of the regular season. Many of those teams had nothing to play for on the final week.
Of the four teams that lost their last game of the regular season, the margins of loss were seven, seven, two, and 22 points. The 22 point loss was by the 1988 49ers.
We can try to talk ourselves out of this reality all we want, but it's sitting there, right under our noses. Obviously we have a good team, but it's not been playing good for a month, unlike the last two decades of Super Bowl champions.

Just a thought
and it's becoming more evident, is that Ellis appears to be wearing down like I warned a few weeks ago. There has been a lack of a consistant pass rush for several weeks. Were making no name QB's look like Tom Brady in the pocket. Today was no different.
by Cowboys81 on Dec 30, 2007 8:17 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I disagreed with Longhorn
but I take it back. The Cowboys embarassed themselves tonight and lost something - maybe "mojo" - by crumpling to the redskins. They played heartless, souless football. If this is allowed to carry over, they'll be escorted once again from the first round without a victory. Bad job Wade in motivating the troops.
by dunkman on Dec 30, 2007 8:19 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Three issues as I see it....
- Negative Momentum - Don't underestimate the importance of being "hot" going into the playoffs
- Poor Effort - Its unacceptable to say we didn't have anything to play for. How many guys were getting their big chance to show something today and did not get it done. We only had 4 starters out - this is Cowboys vs. Redskins for crying out loud. It should not need to have playoff implications.
- The play calling is downright scary. Where is the run - we will not last long without it. We are limping badly. By the way - it was a pretty dissapointing performance out of our future receiving corps (Hurd and Austin).
OK - I've vented now. GO COWBOYS!!!

Observations
Jacques Reeves is awful
Roy Williams is embarassing
The running game had what (please, lord, tell me this is all it is) seems to be a one-game minefield.
Brad Johnson seemed better than Tony Romo. I never imagined that I would make such a statement. Obviously he had more reason to play, but it was still disheartening.
If the Redskins keep playing like this, we will meet in two weeks. There's no doubt in my mind that the guys who beat us today could run over Seattle.
D-Ware is not entirely human. 84 tackles, 14 sacks, 4 forced fumbles. Those are D-Player of the Year numbers.
Terrence Newman is really, really, really good. We don't notice it until he's not there.
Jason Garrett has lost the aggressiveness that made him so great early in the season. I have to believe it might be Wade's influence.
If we don't draft a cornerback or safety in the first round, Jeff Ireland needs to be fired.
by Or Moyal on Dec 30, 2007 8:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
it seemed that waybecause receivers were actually
catching his passes, but I thought Johnson played horrible, much worse than Romo.
by Terry on Dec 30, 2007 8:52 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
were not drafting a safety
because Roy is not going anywhere and we have Watkins. Hamlin will be resigned. Our problem is Roy and will continue to be Roy until we get rid of him. We need a better pass rush to off set his weakness. We been lacking the pass rush the last few weeks. Ware seems to be the only one getting it and Ellis is wearing down. Pass rush is the key, without it we are in trouble because Roy is going give up big plays.

Romo never won a playoff game at any level of competition, from High School up to the NFL. He's not a big game player, just a numbers guy like White was or Dan Marino if that soothes your fancy.

Romo thrives under pressure, we had plenty of pressure games this season in Sept, Oct and Nov and Romo played great in all of them.

He plays 3 lousy games in 16 this season and he suddenly sucks? How amazingly myopic are you? This game meant nothing and the whole team played like it. Romo was in for one half and was pedestrian, but the Redskins played outstanding pass defense, especially on Whitten.

in the playoffs so we can use Landry's cheap shot on Glenn as extra motivation.

thats not what Romo and Glenn said
as long as they think it was intentional, thats all that matters.

especially the endzone slow motion, landry was trying to make a play on the ball, when he couldn't get there, he wasn't trying to take out Glenn, he was trying to stop but slid into Glenn, he was actually putting his weight on his left side to try to stop. Motivation?
I hope they don't use it for motivation.
First, they shouldn't need more motivation than it being the playoffs and a chance to show up the team that embarrassed them just two weeks earlier.
Second, that's not the kind of thing that motivates excellence. It's the kind of thing that motivates responding in kind, and this is a team that already commits too many stupid penalties.
If they do use it for motivation, I hope they'll stop talking about it anywhere but the locker room. We don't need to invite the refs to be examining our play with a mindset that the Cowboys are out to hurt a player.

Landry hit the ground five yards before
he made contact with Glenn, he slid into him, I dont think that was a cheap shot at all.

Phillips sums it up best
The Cowboys pinpointed their problem during today's game. They really didn't give a hoot what happened as long as they didn't suffer any more injuries.
Of course, the Redskins played with the passion expected of a team fighting for a playoff berth. The result: The Redskins kicked the Cowboys' butt up and down the field.
"The word for us was uninspired," Wade Phillips said. "It shows you when one team is fired up and the other one isn't. Basically, I didn't get our team ready to play."
Added Tony Romo: "You saw what happens out there when one team plays with that much emotion and the other one really doesn’t. Obviously, we didn't match their intensity level, and that's the story."
The motivation mismatch was most evident in the Cowboys' running game. Dallas gained a franchise-record-low 1 yard on 16 carries. That's 0.06 yards per carry.
"We didn't play with intensity, and they did," Pro Bowl RG Leonard "Bigg" Davis said. "And it showed."
when you don't give a rats ass about winning the game, you don't play well. I think we'll want to win in 2 weeks.
by Terry on Dec 30, 2007 10:15 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I never thought they'd win this game
All I was looking for from this team was show up for atleast a quarter especially on offense and establish a couple of drives, a five or six minute drive with some resemblance of a consistant offense would of been nice.
by Deke on Dec 30, 2007 10:20 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I never thought they would either
and they would have put togther a decent drive if T.O. would have played, but everyone should realize we're not a great offense without him. We obviously need him to win, thats obviously not a secret.

how do you get that from what they Are saying?
"when you don't give a rats ass about winning the game, you don't play well."

I don't understand you Terry - you read into that -
that the team did not give a rat azz
TO FUNNY
I think we are in trouble
I have seen the for the whole month no desire to play the best they can - which should be a given every week - all 17 of them

your right they should..
but just because they didn't doesn't mean they or we should quit now...
by hashishkabob on Dec 30, 2007 11:05 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
thats exactly what I read into those statements
they didn't care about winning the game, bottom line.
by Terry on Dec 31, 2007 7:41 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
WTF?!?!
Why in the world did they admit that publicly?
A. It looks like they weren't giving the Skins much credit... as if to basically slap them in the face with disrespect in essence saying we let them win.
B. From a PR perspective -- and from an integrity of the game perspective -- it totally makes them look like cowards.
Personally, I would've rather they just stayed humble and said, "we played a bad game... and I think we're fortunate this didn't hurt our playoff changes. I'm just glad that we can go into the playoffs without any serious injuries from this game."
It reminds me of the days leading up to the Green Bay-Denver Super Bowl where the Broncos held their collective tongues... staying humble, diplomatic and respectful to the opposing Packers.
Then, after Denver won that Super Bowl, Bill Romanowski said something like, "I'm so glad we beat them and it's finally over, because I got so tired of kissing their a**es before the game."
I like what Wade has done to help lead us to the 13-3 regular season record -- he gets tons of credit for this season's accomplishments. However, I think he needs to be more polished and use better judgment when it comes to speaking to the media.

Furthermore, on the heels of today's post-game...
... comments, Wade & The Boyz better practice each practice with Jimmy Johnson style intensity because the time for fooling around is over.
How do you get paid all of those millions of dollars and come right out to say that you were "uninspired" and "didn't match the intensity level" and "I didn't get this team ready to play."
Hell, you had a freakin' week. It would've been better if he had the subs practice full tilt and play the entire game giving 100% than the subpar lethargic bulls__t that was on display in Week 17.
Everyone can say that the Colts mailed it in today, too... but did you see their Defense going all out and keeping the game close.
And the Packers -- yes even against the lowly Lions -- maximized the time that their starters were in en route to a double-digit victory over Detroit. Favre still threw two TDs in limited action.
I lost a little respect for Wade as a Head Coach after today's performance.

I agree
I've been commenting on this teams lack of character for a while now. At least I can blame bad weather, albeit a weak argument, but it holds a lot more merit than "I didn't wanna." What a joke. I'd be pissed, and it sounds like thats the case with most of you.

My Venting
First off, congrats to the Redskins for playing an outstanding game – for showing up big-time in a game that they absolutely had to have. And boo on Dallas for mailing this one in. That was a really difficult game to watch. Intellectually, you know it doesn’t matter and you keep reminding yourself that the only important stat at the end of the game is who got injured. But emotionally, it’s so difficult to turn it off – to not care, even when it is very apparent that the team does not care.
Since Grizz invited a little bit of venting, I’ll take him up on it. The one thing that really irritated me was that the announcers (especially our Troy) kept making the point that the Redskins were a dominant team and the Cowboys were playing terrible – without providing the context as to why. It would have been nice to hear just once that the Cowboys have been an outstanding team all season long, have locked up home field advantage a week ago, are the best team in the NFC, are resting many, many key players and that mentally they are just mailing this one in. Sheesh, the uninformed football fan would have walked away from that game thinking the Redskins were the better football team.
It often seems to me that when Troy is announcing Dallas games he goes out of his way to point out negatives for Dallas and the positives for the opponent. Almost as if he is trying to establish his credibility as an unbiased color guy. That bothers me. While the announcers were slobbering over the Redskins and pointing out that Dallas was a terrible football team, the one thought that kept coming back to me was......please let Washington come to Dallas in the playoffs. Let’s see both teams strap it on when all the players are healthy, on the active roster and playing a game that matters to both teams. If the Redskins dominate Dallas under those circumstances, the announcers can justifiably trash Dallas and anoint Washington.
There, now I feel better.

I'm hoping we see the Redskins in the playoffs
as the Cowboys will want to prove to the Skins who the real Cowboys are, not the team that didn't care about winning a meaningless game, but the team that smoked them for 4 TDs by T.O. in November.
by Terry on Dec 31, 2007 9:20 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Smoked them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
28-23 is a smoke!!!!!!what game were you watching, a late INT by Newman was what kept us from losing that game...
by Deke on Dec 31, 2007 9:28 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
yes T.O. smoked them bad
I know you hate T.O. and never want to admit when he dominates, but he dominated the Skins that day and he'll do the same if we see them again.
I never said we blew them out, but our offense did score at will, or should I say T.O. scored at will and there's nothing to indicate he won't do it again.
by Terry on Dec 31, 2007 9:32 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
big "if"
thats what the word is on T.O's availability for that game if it were to happen, iffy... if the skins beat Seattle, which I highly doubt,
Hate T.O, thats nonsense, you're the one that likes to label people, I dont hate anybody, dont know the man personally, how could you hate a guy if you dont know him. I dont like his antics, he becoms a distraction most of the time on the sidelines, if he doeesn't get his way, he pouts, like a chid. He's not Micheal Irvin, who encouaged and inspired his team mates to play better to win, T.O doesn't, he just wants to bitch and complain about not getting the ball, its I,I,I. T.O's a guy who likes to throw others under the bus, but when he drops pass after pass, he never takes responsibility. I did give the guy credit for having less drops this year an playing better, but when he doesn't get his touches for two games, he starts pouting, the guy comes across as an "I" guy, not a team guy. I believe he's more interested in what his stats are in a game rather than if the team wins the game or not..
From the play by this team over the last four games, Dominant isn't a word you should associate with the cowboys.. there are alarming signs and indications that this team "could be" the San diego chargers of last year, one and done... I hope not, but the signs are there.
Just as Troy Aikman said during the broadcast, and by the way, for those who like to trash Troy, he's an analyst for the fOX network, not there to wave cowboy Pom poms, its an opinion that he forms from watching tape of the games , talking to the players and the coaches, and since he's played in the league and has three rings to back it up, I'll trust what he says about the cowboys, he certainly has more info than anyone here. What he said was right, you dont like going into the playoffs the way the cowboys are with the way they've played since the first half of the packer game, they dont look like the same team.
by Deke on Dec 31, 2007 10:02 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
thats not true regarding Aikman
he doesn't know anymore about the Cowboys than anyone else since he no longer is a member of the team. I'd rather listen to the actual members of the current team, those are the guys that know what the team is all about and they say they're extremely condfident they will play well in the playoffs and I believe them.
As for T.O., he has been a team player this season, being very unselfish and never complaining when he doesn't get the ball. He's been a team leader this season, a total "we" player.
He'll be back for the first playoff game, I don't think it's iffy at all. He'll live in his hypobaric chamber for 3 weeks and be ready to slice up whomever our first opponent may be.
The reason we won't be this years SD is because Romo has never played 2 bad games in a row. He'll be determined to play at a high as I'm sure the rest of team will as well. He won't let us down, I truly believe that.
by Terry on Dec 31, 2007 10:18 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The head coach said he was "IFFY"
so which is it Terry, you said you would rather believe what the players and coaches say, you either believe what the coach and players say, or not. The Coach said T.O. was "iffy" for the upcoming game, but you dont buy that, so I guess you really dont buy into what the head coach or what the players say in the end...
by Deke on Dec 31, 2007 10:27 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
you're the one that always points out
Phillips has no clue about the medical condition of his players and shouldn't be believed, well the same holds true with T.O., Wade is just speculating about his injury, but I guarantee you he knows what he's talking about when it comes to the mental state of his players and their preparation over the nest 2 weeks. He'll have the team ready to play, you can take that to the bank.
by Terry on Dec 31, 2007 10:33 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I've said it many times
I dont believe a word that comes out of wade Phillips mouth, this isn't about me, this is about what you said and the double talk, wade said T.O was IFFY for the game, you apparantly dont believe that after saying you believe what players and coaches say instead of Troy Aikman because they're in the locker room, not what I said. wade Phillips press conference are a waste of time to listen too, IMO. One internet radio station actually has Benny Hill music leading into and out of his press conferences, that I find histerical..

I posted that
yesterday. Wade did say that in his post game press conference. "iffy" was the exact wording he used.
