Cowboys vs. Redskins: What they're saying

I guess we’ll spend some time talking about the disaster that was yesterday. I don’t want to dwell on it too long, both for my own personal sanity and for the fact I don’t think it will have much to do with how we play in two weeks. But you can’t be too blasé about the loss, which was about as bad a football game as any Cowboys team has played in a long time. To truly get the picture of the magnitude of the beatdown, you have to look at the stats. One yard rushing? Are you serious? That’s mission impossible yet we somehow managed to do it. And what was up with Jason Witten, he sure dropped a few out there that looked catchable. Miles Austin had a chance to show something, that something just may be he has the hands of a defensive back. I could go on because the list is long.

Let’s hear what the players and coaches had to say:

Wade Phillips says it pretty succinctly here:

"One team was inspired and one team wasn't," Phillips said after the game. "I guess I didn't do a good job of getting our team ready to play. I thought we would play better than we did, but we didn't."

I know the game was meaningless, and we were trying to protect players like we should have, but the effort put forth by the guys actually on the field should resemble an NFL team. If you lose the game because you were playing backups, then that’s OK. If you lose the game because even your starter’s played like dung, that’s a demerit. In some ways, it’s on you Wade, for letting your team prepare for a game and play like that.

Tony Romo:

"That's just passion and emotion involved in the game," Romo said. "That part of it is basic - one team is going to sacrifice their bodies to stop the run and they did. You have to give them credit. They played with a lot of emotion and a lot of intensity."

Ehh...I have to say I hate this quote. What he specifically said is our defense didn’t play to win the game, they just played because it was required. More generally, he’s saying this team didn’t have any pride to show up at the game and play some football. Again, we know the game was meaningless but to totally mail-it-in and not even have a little pride in your game, unlike other playoff teams who won or were at least competitive in their games - that smells like yesterday’s fish.

More Phillips:

"I'm not concerned about anything other than this next ball game and I think we'll be ready to play," Phillips said. "We won 13 games. We went 13-3 and had the best record in the NFC. I think we're fine. We had a bad game against Philadelphia when I thought we could be playing at our best. This game, I'm going to discount this one a little bit."

This I also agree with from Wade; yesterday’s disaster is yesterday’s news. You are starting the second season and everything is wiped clean except for two things, a few teams get the advantage of a bye week and one team in a conference gets home-field advantage throughout. So you’re playing from an advantage already,.

Now, a loss isn’t a good thing. And a loss of this ineptitude is never good. But, if you want to take something from this game, take the fact that all your hard work through the season and all the accolades you’ve received and all the records you set are dust if you lose in two weeks. You’ll be remembered as a major bust. A team that that played above its head but that folded like a Taco Bell burrito once the real games began.

Jerry Jones:

"It's frustrating," owner and general manager Jerry Jones said. "But this thing might be what you want with these two weeks to live in this pile of you know what. It could inspire our team."

Indeed. "Live in this pile of you know what." Even Jerry wanted to bust out the expletives to explain this game.

Romo tries to offer some defense for the way they played.

"We know what we're doing, and we held some things back," Romo said. "We're more than confident going into the playoffs. ... It's interesting because you're in a tough predicament: you might play them again, you might not."

Sure, that may be true, but you’re still guilty as charged.

This game was so bad that MB3 needed just 19 yards to get to 1,000 for the season – and he actually got further away from that mark. On the other hand, Colts WR Reggie Wayne caught 12 passes in three series to become the leading receiver in yards for the NFL and reach 100 catches. Yeah, the Colts were at home and in a dome, but there’s just no excuse for one-yard rushing.

"We didn't execute; we didn't play with emotion, energy, enthusiasm; we didn't play with any of that," Pro Bowl guard Leonard Davis said. "They played with all three of those better than we did."

Our running game better find itself come the playoffs. Perhaps the presence of Andre Gurode is what we need, because it has to get better.

"We're concentrating on who we're playing next," Pro Bowl tackle Flozell Adams said. "It definitely won't look like it did today, I promise you that."

OK, we’re marking down that promise.

Taking a detour down a side-street, what’s up with Terry Glenn and Tony Romo accusing LeRon Landry of a cheap-shot? It sure didn’t look that way to me, it appeared that he slid on a wet carpet after trying to make a play and ended up right at Glenn’s feet. Maybe it was just frustration on the Cowboys part but I didn’t see any evil-intent from Landry on the play.

The principal players speak:

"It shocked me," said Glenn, who was also accidentally knocked down in warmups by cornerback Jacques Reeves. "I had no idea that was going to happen. Those guys were out there trying to really take it to my knee. They know if they see us again, they will have problems, especially in Dallas. I think they were trying to hurt me."

Landry was asked about the low hit after the game and didn't seem to think anything was wrong.

"Then stop playing football," he said. "I'm not getting a big head or anything, but if he thought the hits were a little low and this and that, it doesn't matter. It's all part of the game. It's going to be physical."

At least Glenn got a few reps in and got hit so he knows he’s ready to play now.

So the Cowboys have two weeks of practice to right this thing. They have the talent to get it done, as long as T.O. plays. They should now have the motivation to know that this could all become a bad dream in two weeks if they don’t get their head out of their collective hind-parts and start playing good football again.

Roy Williams:

"We really didn’t show up today — point blank," safety Roy Williams conceded. "We didn’t even show up on the field. Mentally and everything else, we weren’t there.

"We did not show up and the score proved that, and our play on the field proved that. I don’t know how people are going to respond to this. I know that we better get our stuff together."

Roy is church-folk so he used the euphemism "stuff" for "doo-doo", or maybe it was something a little more graphic. Anyway, they have two weeks to get their "stuff" together.

Wade?

"Yeah, they can turn it on in two weeks," Phillips said. "They're going to be ready; I can guarantee you that."

I'm concerned

We haven't played well the last month. We looked so bad yesterday, that I don't see how it can be brushed aside. That was embarrassing on a scale I haven't seen since the 5-11 teams of years past.

I just hope that their 1st opponent is Washington

Just think of how the players feel..
They are professionals and all are hearing the news. Do you think they are going to be just whatever. I know if it was id be pissed off and ready to prove myself toeveryone. Im not too concerned they have two weeks to think about this and get ready. They can do it.

Landry

tried to cheap shot Glenn no question. Everyone knows, including Landry Glenn has a bad knee. The Redksins don't want to face a healthy Glenn in the playoffs the more reason to try and take him out.

Mickey said this morning Landry is starting to get a history of launching himself and turning into a dirty player.

Maybe he is trying too hard to make a name for himself because he is a young player. Landry is just a Sean Taylor wanna be.

I agree, there was no excuse no slide
and hit into his knees like he did. If the argument was that he was going after the ball and couldn't avoid Glenn, thats fine, but to intentionally slide into his knees looked like it was on purpose to me.

Nobody can convince me he had to slide in that situation.

Did you watch the replay?

The ball is going to the ground, that's why he slid to the ground. His hands literally came within a foot or two of touching and possibly catching the ball for an INT. He was making a play on the ball. I can see no intentional play at Glenn's knee.

wasting your time Grizz!!

You're 100% correct, The replay clearly showed that Landry was making a play on the ball, not Glenn and happen to slide three yards on his knees prone into Glenn, there was NO intend to take Glenn out...

Contact

I don't know that he was trying to take out his knees, but it certainly looked as if once he knew he wasn't getting to the ball that he was looking for some low contact. Pretty much looked avoidable to me. But the opponent does not have to work at avoiding you.

You can't dispute

the fact that Terry had knowledge they were looking to take him out. Landry is getting a rep for launching his body and becoming a dirty player in his very short career. I have no doubt in my mind they were looking to take Terry out in this game. Mickey said this morning on his show he may have slipped but he was going low.

Of Course Someone Can Dispute It

Since there's no clear evidence Landry was deliberately trying to injure Glenn.  All you have is the unfounded allegations of one frustrated player and a video which doesn't show malicious intent.

It's easy to dispute, actually.

there isn't any, thats what Glenn thought at the time in his mind, but the video evidence shows that wasn't the case. there was no conspiracy to take glenn out..

by Deke on Dec 31, 2007 5:58 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If He Had First Hand Knowledge

He should have come right out and identified exactly who said what to him.  He hasn't done that, just made emotional allegations immediately after the game.

The reasons for his behavior are not hard to understand.  Terry Glenn may well be playing his final season, so he's naturally sensitive about any possibility of injury eliminating that rapidly-closing window of opportunity.

The irony of your comment of telling me to think before I speak is, you're championing a rumor-based conspiracy theory that the head coach disputes, whereas Grizz, me, Deke and others are basing our decisions on factual information and logic.  Perhaps you should practice what you preach.

by kindablue on Dec 31, 2007 6:05 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Which is more likely

Landry saw Glenn running the route, saw the ball in the air, decided that if I act like I'm going to play the ball and then go to the ground and "accidentally" slide into Glenn, and if he continues on his same path and velocity I'll have a great shot at taking out his leg but possibly causing a big penalty if I don't fake the refs out....

Or, he saw the ball, made a play to get an INT and his momentum carried him into Glenn.

Careful with the "think before you speak man" comments, Cowboys81. The advice could be better served at home.

With all due respect Grizz

I don't make anything up. I listen to alot of Cowboys programming. I'm simply stating what a Cowboys beat writer with first hand knowledge of the situation said on his radio show this morning. Terry Glenn as far as I know has not come out and said anything different today.

Mickey said on his radio show this morning that Glenn heard the Redskins were looking to take him out. He called Landry out specifically. Glenn gave him permission to quote him on that when asked by Mickey. Now, whether that's through over hearing other players make comments or his own telling him this I don't know. What I do know is that he took himself out of the game because he knew what was going on and didn't like it. Not only was Glenn upset over this so was Romo that is clearly documented.

Mickey said Landry did slip, but his "intent" was there and I agree. He said Landry went low on him another time that nobody knows about. So it's not just the one incident everyone here is focused on.

Maybe you guys should listen to what Mickey said this morning before casting judgement. He is the Cowboys beat writer and has first hand knowledge, more so than any of us here I would think.

And I absolutely think before I speak because I don't believe in inaccurate statements and false reporting.

The Beast of the East is back!!!!

by Cowboys81 on Dec 31, 2007 6:35 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just Because

Mickey Spagnola quoted a player making unfounded allegations doesn't mean they should be treated as fact.  And Mickey thinks the video supports that.  So I guess all of us who have seen the video ourselves should discount what we've seen with our own eyes and judgement, and accept the opinion of someone else, a Cowboys employee at that.

Interesting that Wade Phillips disagrees with Mickey and Terry, and dismisses the incident.  I guess his "first hand knowledge" of the incident isn't as good as Mickey's; maybe he's in on the conspiracy too!

The video evidence doesn't support Glenn's conspiracy theory.  He hasn't said anything more than he thought they were trying to "take him out".  If the Redskins cooked up a conspiracy to injure a Cowboys player, I would hope they would have better sense to go after someone indispensible like Romo or Ware, rather than someone who hasn't played all season.  The whole story is too paranoid and lacking in substance to be taken seriously.

by kindablue on Dec 31, 2007 7:12 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the intent was there

I think it was dirty. He was going for the ball by sliding on the ground? COME ON!

If you know anything about football that's not how you approach someone when you are about to tackle. He clearly was coming in low and slipped. Why was he coming in low?

Like I said, this was the second incident by Landry during the game trying to take Glenn out.

There is plenty of video evidence there to support the facts. The problem is people are focused on the slip and not the other things.

"From what I heard, the guy was really trying to take me out," Glenn said. "So now I look back on it, yeah, I think it was intentional, because he could’ve stayed back. If I’m running in for the ball like that, why is he coming at my knees? He’s a young guy," Glenn said. "And hey, I guess he wanted to play a little dirty, I don’t know, I’m not sure."

your killing me

Grizz...lol. I'm not buying it.

You can't explain the other time Glenn said it happened. Both times he went low. Landry has a history of being a dirty player going back to his LSU days.

Landry commenting on Glenns statements:

"Then stop playing football. I’m not getting a big head or anything, but if he thought the hits were a little low and this and that, it doesn’t matter. It’s all part of the game. It’s going to be physical."

Someone sounds like they might have a guilty conscious by those statements.

jerk. It's that simple. He's been flagged for personal fouls all season. It was his MO in HS football, college and it will continue in the pros. He's a dirty player and it's only a matter of time before he serioulsy injures someone.

Landry - dirty hit?

Sorry to be getting in on this late, but I read some of the comments and had to add my 2 cents.

First off, I agree that Landry gets some really stupid rookie penalties.  But most are for taunting, not late hits.  The guy definitely needs to mature.  But to call him dirty and say it is only a matter of time until he hurts someone?  Can I remind you that we have Roy "horse collar" Williams on our team.  He has seriously hurt two people and was suspended an entire game for his last flagrant personal foul.  Should we really be crying about Landry?

Also, did you see the replay or the play in question?  If Fred Smoot and not gotten out of the way at the last minute it would have been him that Landry took out.  Perhaps that was part of their grand plan... or should I call it conspiracy theory.

Let's worry about our pathetic play, not the deadskins tackling technique.

Looked Legit to Me

My heart stopped when I saw Glenn get undercut, but the replay changed my mind.  After diving for the ball, Landry was just sliding (hydroplaning) on the wet field.  He couldn't control his motion after that, and I don't believe he was even facing Glenn, so it's doubtful he know he was going to hit him.

Glenn is rightfully sensitive about his knees, but I didn't see anything malicious on Landry's part.

Watch the Replay on YouTube

When you get the chance.  He was clearly diving for the ball, and slid into Glenn.  The contact looked incidental on the replay.

See the link I posted above to watch it.

by kindablue on Dec 31, 2007 12:26 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree, he was going for the ball

At the time I didn't think it looked intentional, and I think so more now on watching the replay. He was clearly diving for the ball, and then slid into Glenn.

You can't read Landry's mind, and although he was backwards when he hit Glenn he was facing him as he came in and I'm sure he was aware that he was there, but he had every right to go for the ball and to hit Glenn in the process if he happened to be in the path, and I doubt he was intentionally aiming at Glenn's knee.

But other than blaming Landry for a cheap shot, I like Glenn's attitude about taking the hit:

And although he wasn't too excited about the hit from Landry, Glenn said he was relieved to know he could withstand a blow to his knee without a major setback.

"I'm glad I did," Glenn said. "I took a few shots today. Even in warm-ups, one from Jacques Reeves today on accident. I think that was my thing to do today - get hit and get that feel back again. [...] It felt really good to get hit for once."

Agreed Terry and Glenn

and many others including Romo thought the same. I don't care what that video showed. There was intent there and Glenn had knowledge during the game they were going to take him out. Mickey also said Glenn took HIMSELF out of the game and could've returned, but knew they were gunning for him.

You guys can look at the video all you want, but there was alot of talk on the field about roughing up Glenn. They didn't want a healthy Glenn if they faced him in the playoffs. Glenn has had some really good games against them and they know it.

This whole thread is hysterical.

Hi fellas, a diehard Skins fan here. Looking forward to playing you in two weeks.

I am honestly not trying to troll, but anyone who says this was an intentional hit is clearly smoking the conspiracy weed.

As I posted on Hogs Haven:

SURE, it was intentional.

In fact, Landry was so eager to hit Glenn that he also intentionally tried to take out his own cornerback in an effort to get to Glenn:

That's right, who cares if Landry had to put one of his own starters on IR? As long as he could get the superhuman Terry Glenn, it would be worth it.

Does Landry try to intimidate opposing receivers? Yes, of course he does. That's his job, as it is the job of Roy Williams.

But to say he was headhunting Glenn on this play just strains credulity.

...been dubbed as a coach who can't win a playoff game, but our team is building a rep for not being able to win a playoff game either (we haven't won a playoff game in the new millenium and the last two appearances have been "one and done" -- Seattle last season AND Carolina in Parcells' first season in Dallas).

Not trying to be negative, but I'd just like 'ol Wade to do a better job at CONSISTENTLY preparing/motivating his team days prior to game time.

Jimmy J always kept the intensity level up and no one could ever accuse him or his best players of not having it or not bringing it on game day.

Hi

Been lurking a bit, and this board seems a bit more mature than most, so thought I'd register to share my thoughts on the game.

I couldn't watch the first half, but tapped it. Came home, watched some of the second half, and then read the posts here. Sounded pretty bad. But then a funny thing happened; I watched the first half on tape and became less concerned. Don't get me wrong, I think mailing in your last game of the season with your starters on the field is not a good thing to do before the playoffs. Many teams have done this in the past and come out very flat in their first playoff game and gotten embarrassed. Especially with a bye. Having said that, these are my thoughts, only considering the first half, which I think is the only important time of a game like this. I don't think there's anything wrong with starters taking the second half off in a meaningless game:

  1. The defense actually played pretty well. They continue to improve, which is a great sign going into the playoffs. Did they get burned a couple of plays? Sure. But I saw a unit that was making the effort and made some good stops. R. Williams and Reeves being weak in coverage is nothing new. Sure it's a worry, but it's been that way since day one. Not having Newman on the field is a big deal. We won't give up as many long third down completions in the playoffs when he's back. Trust me. Plus, D. Ware continues to be a monster. LOVE that guy. I think we'll be OK on this side of the ball come the second week in January.
  1. What's up with Tony? He hasn't looked right since the Philly game. I'm guessing he has an injury beyond the thumb that he's not telling anyone about. The wincing he did coming off the field after the sack to end the half seemed disproportionate to the hit he took. He seems to be more erratic now and maybe a bit less confident. This worries me.
  1. The run blocking was bad. Very bad. This is another worry. In a game like this (i.e. rain, meaningless game they want to get over with quickly by grinding the clock, etc.), they should have been driving hard and running a lot. Instead, the play-calling was still a bit pass heavy and the O-line was getting beat 4 times out of 5. If I were coach, this is where I'd focus practice for the next two weeks.
  1. I wish Terry could have caught a couple. Confidence is a big deal in football, especially for the skill positions and DB's, and I think it would have helped him in the playoffs immensely if he'd just gotten his hands on 2 or 3 balls. Bummer. And am I the only one that thinks the first ball Romo threw to him was interference? I thought a DB wasn't allowed to run through the receiver to get to the ball. Did they change that rule? Sure looked like the same play when they called interference on us in the second half.
  1. Has anyone noticed the improvement in our special teams coverage? Thank goodness! The first half of the season was an adventure every time we kicked off or punted. While we may not be the best now, we're a heck of a lot better. That's another positive, at least. :-)

In summary, I'm not too worried based on last nights game. The sky is not falling. Still, we're not a juggernaut at this point, and I think the team will make a mistake if they treat the first playoff game with over-confidence. They should look at whatever team they end up against as the favorite and themselves as the underdog with something to prove.

If this game did anything, it should prevent them from being over-confident!

Wow & Welcome, chamr...

Thanks for taping the game, watching it again, and breaking it down for us, dude.

Of the five things U mentioned, I'm most concerned about #3 -- the run blocking.  Agree with you that this definitely needs to be addressed and improved during the two wks of prep.

Not Pass Interference

Chamr,

Re #4, check out this Official Review segment about a similar play in the Dallas game against Detroit. Pereira explains:

he makes a break to the ball, cuts the route, and they actually collide shoulder to shoulder. You can't play through a defender's back, but you have a right to the path of the ball, so if you do hit shoulder to shoulder, as happens here, it's not a foul. Yes, the contact is early, but in fact the defensive play really has got inside and front position on the receiver. [...] This is actually not a foul.

Here's a replay of the first pass to Glenn, which was intercepted by Springs.

Especially on the third view from downfield, it seems like Pereira could be describing this play. Although the contact is early, Springs cuts the route and they collide shoulder to shoulder.

There was a later play that I thought was similar, however, that was called PI, but I think maybe on that one the defender was more playing through the back of the receiver.

We're allowed to worry...

...because we're fans of this team. But it just seems like this team has a phobia of playing well in December. We really just played horribly all December, but this year because we are a better team, we actually won 2 of the games.

But December is as good as over. It's about to be January, and that means new beginnings. Lets forget about all the pain of this last month and remember that we are 13-3.

there is some merit to what you say

It makes perfect sense to think the reason why the Cowboys played at such as high level early on is because subconsciously they knew they might have another December swoon, it was always in the back of their mind whether they would admit it or not.

Especially Romo, since everyone was saying he fades in December, he just might have been trying too hard and pressing come December. This game is more mental than most people realize, and all of this late season fade talk could have been there in the back of their minds all along.

That being said, January and the playoffs is a different time and I remember the Cowboys came out and played much better in their playoff game against Seattle last year than they had played all of December in 2006.

This makes me believe they can come out and play well again in their first playoff game in 2 weeks.

Its a new season and and a new hope, everyone, including the Pats are all 0-0.

Nobidy thought that Tony faded down the stretch

last year. There were alot of factors, thee biggest was the way our defense completely collapsed the last four games of the season. We can all agree that Bill pulled the reigns back on our offense and defense, playing conservative, not to lose instead of playing to win, and when games we were getting down by double digits, Tony was forcing balls into coverage trying to make things happen instead of taking the check downs, no one was putting it all on Romo, he was just a small part of what happen to this team last year. The defense is what destroyed our season and not allowing our coordinators to call their games.

this team is more than one player

The team as a whole as faded in December. Terry has a great point. The team as a whole looked so much better in their playoff game against Seattle than they had in all of December.

They know what needs to be done in January and I think they can do it.

Forget about this horrid game and focus on beating the Bucs/Giants/Redskins.

by ender0887 on Dec 31, 2007 1:22 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the team didn't look better in the playoffs

Seattle was signing guys off the street to start in their secondary because of injuries, Pete Hunter was one of them, and we couldn't move the ball at all and we had Witten, Glenn, T.O and crayton, Barber, JJ and Romo all healthy.

21-20 Our vaunted offense had 1 TD against street defenders on defense.

Romo was 17-29, 189 yds 1 td

our defense played better in the playoff game than they showed the last four games of the season, but as a whole, the team was not better..

Deke, that was Parcells playing conservative

There's absolutely no question the Cowboys played much, much better against Seattle than they did in their December swoon of 2006, it certainly was good enough to win the game.

Especially the defense, to give up only 21 points to the defending conference champs after giving up 40 burgers in December is a vast improvement in my book.

Excellent Writeup Grizz

I think you captured my thoughts coming out of the game very well.  As much as I hate to see the Redskins win against us, I could have lived with that, if we sat several of our starters and played hard, and lost.  But we clearly were not motivated or ready to play.  Given how other teams in a similar position played yesterday, and in years past, our performance was inexcusable.

And not to be too alarmist, but Wade Phillips has never won a playoff game in his career.  He's never head coached a home playoff game, much less managed a team as a number one seed.  In my mind, his lack of experience of being in this situation is a risk, albeit a small one.

I believe there's a good chance we will bounce back in two weeks and play well, especially if Owens is fully recovered.  That's not my biggest concern.  What does concern me is the clear pattern of Super Bowl winners heading into the playoffs playing excellent football.  I checked into the history of Super Bowl winners over the last 20 years and found every single team either won their final game of the season (usually, several straight games); or if they lost their final game, had at least a four game winning streak prior to that loss.  It's not rocket science:  Championship-caliber teams play their best football at the end of the season, which carries over into the playoffs.  History is not encouraging for us to win the Super Bowl, although we might play well enough to get there.

Colts looked like crap last December

even though they won their last game. They went 2-2 in December as well. It can be done as Colts proved last season.

Right, The Colts Won Their Final Game

of the regular season last year, which puts them in the same class as the other 19 Super Bowl winners of the last 20 years to either win on the final week, or win at least four games before losing the final game.  We weren't able to do either.

Teams have gone 2-2 over their last four and won the Super Bowl, but that's not the discriminator.  The last week results I mentioned above is.

From what i saw the receiver ran into henry.
I saw henry break on the ball and the Skins WR ran into him not vice versa. Just calling it how i see it.

Id beg to differ.
They were coming from different directions.

Henry has every right to that ball as does the

WR. Henry was in place to catch the ball first

then the WR came and made contact. Atleast thats

how i saw it.

Henry does have a right to the ball

but you cant go through the receiver to get there, Henry hit the receiver before the ball got there, its pretty clear..
