Free agency good

Rob Phillips, over at DC.com, takes a look at the Cowboys free agency process and determines he likes what he sees.

Grade A: No giant splashes other than Davis, but a precise, aggressive approach to free agency. The Cowboys targeted their needs, both from within and outside last year's roster, and filled them swiftly. Hamlin's one-year deal was a shrewd signing given his experience and the Cowboys' inconsistencies at safety last season. They have invested a little to possibly make a lot at that position.

What's Left: The Cowboys likely won't make another major acquisition unless something falls in their lap, and their remaining holes could be addressed in the draft. They still need a backup nose tackle behind 32-year-old Jason Ferguson, and the offensive line still could use a little more depth, particularly if Rivera doesn't return. Restricted free-agent cornerbacks Nate Jones and Jacques Reeves have yet to sign their original draft choice tenders ($850,000), and the Cowboys would receive a seventh-round pick if they decided not to match another team's offer for either player.

For all the Chris Houston fans, here’s a mock draft from FOX Sports.

Cowboys Chris Houston CB Arkansas Senior
Beyond starters Terence Newman and Anthony Henry, the Cowboys lack depth at corner. Houston is raw and likely needs a year or two to make a true impact, but Dallas can afford the luxury with veterans Aaron Glenn and Jacques Reeves able to handle the nickel role if necessary in '07.

Rick Gosselin takes a look at the potential kick returners in this year’s draft.

I don't get it...

Our depth behind Newman and Henry is bad enough that we need Chris Houston, but good enough that he doesn't even need to play the nickle his rookie year if he isn't ready?

Seems contradictory..

Although FOX seems contradictory in their reasoning, the  need for a top corner this year is real. The only corner under contract past this year is Henry.  Glenn is entering his 15th season (probably his last rodeo).  Drafting a CB that can challenge for the #3 (or possibly #2) this year will ensure the boys don't enter next offseason with their pants down.  Re-signing T-New will be expensive (but necessary).  How many more free agent CBs can you sign, and still re-sign Tony Romo, and possibly Folzell, and, and, and....
