Mosley blogging: Spencer is Cowboys target

Matt Mosley is starting up a blog for the draft weekend over at his new gig, ESPN. He thinks he has the scoop on the Cowboys' draft plans.

4:30 p.m.: I was thrilled to see the number of a Cowboys assistant coach show up on my phone, but it turns out he was asking for tickets to the Byron Nelson Championship, which is going on in Irving, Texas, right now. From everything I can tell, the Cowboys will attempt to trade down and select Purdue defensive end/linebacker Anthony Spencer. Director of scouting Jeff Ireland and his staff love how much ground the kid covers, and the Cowboys need another pass-rusher.

Sounds like a good plan, although with Spencer rising up boards, the Cowboys may not even get the opportunity. If he's still there at #22, you probably can't risk too far of a drop, or you might miss him. Tricky needle to thread, but once the first round starts to unfold they can get a better view.

Right now, my top three guesses, and I would be happy with any of them are:
Aaron Ross
Brandon Merriweather
Anthony Spencer

I dropped Dwayne Bowe from third; I just don't think they are going WR in the first round. All that talent available at the position in the second round makes me think they'll wait.

I like Aaron Ross but I get the feeling

we are not going to draft him because he is not a pure man to man cover corner.  I think if we take a corner in the first round it would be Eric Wright.  He is the best pure man cover corner in the draft, and has return abilities.

I think it was his roommate that sold it

I think he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Thats the story

I was just giving him a hard time. He has stayed out of trouble after leaving USC.

Yeah, I worry

about them trying too hard to thread the needle and instead poking a finger by missing out on someone they really want. But if nothing else, Jerry is demonstrating that he can generate an audience from thin air...

We might not have a shot at Ross

It looks like he might be climbing out of reach.

If that is true, I would be happy with Spencer.

We nailed a couple points in our projections, if Mosley is right (could be smokescreen). We liked Ross at #22, or trade back a few spots and take Spencer.

Not too shabby.

Spencer

Would be a reach at 22. He will be there at the bottom of the 1st or top of the 2nd. I sure hope they are not targeting him. He is a undersized DE that would have to be converted to a 3-4 OLB. We don't need another project that will be a rotation player.

We'll see...

Well, the experts can make all the guesses they want, but unless they can get inside Jerry's head there's no way of knowing what will go down tomorrow.  This will be the first post-Parcells draft, and we all remember how the 'Boys drafted before he came into town.  Maybe Jerry will listen to Ireland and the scouts if they love Spencer, but I got a feeling jerry's in love with at least one offensive player that could drop to us, and there's a lot of em: jarrett, ginn, lynch,etc- it'll be interesting to see who's still on the board when we get on the clock.

Sorry but I pick a pass rusher

Anthony Spencer - you don't find them that often - plus Wade knows a teammate of his Phillips from SD -so I think he knows what he is getting

I disgree on Wright I would rather have McCauly in the 2 nd

McCauly was terrible his senior year

he was benched in some games.  He is just a workout warrior.

that is only one year

McCauley has the size, speed, quickness, agility and ball instincts to become a top-flight shutdown corner if he plays with more consistency. He is a gifted cornerback who has the best skill set in this good class. He has athletic ability that allows him to be a ball hawk in coverage, match up with the premier receivers, run stride for stride with them and battle the big wideouts over the middle. For a corner with his size to have the movement skills to play tight man coverage is rare.

He carries a definite first-round grade, but could slide to the early second round and is a great value there. He has the recovery speed to match up with the top NFL receivers and the size to battle the big receivers. He carries an early starting grade. He has incredible upside as a corner, and could become among the best in the game.

you don't pass on a pass rusher

Plus J Thomas Wics. LT was asked who the toughest player he played againest it was Spencer

I be afraid to trade down unless we  had assurances aginest other  teams taking him

I think

NE - has 2 picks in the top 32

  1. N.Y. Jets: Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas -- Houston made a name for himself locking down on Dwayne Jarrett, but he has slipped a bit in recent weeks. The Jets could skip the corner until the next round and take a hybrid OLB/DE like Anthony Spencer here.
  1. **Philadelphia: Anthony Spencer, LB/DE, Purdue -- If the Jets take Spencer, then the Eagles will take the corner. Spencer is one strong player with good speed. Anthony ran the 40 in 4.70 but his weight room numbers (490 bench, 650 squat, 370 power clean) are only outdone by his 21 sacks and 11 forced fumbles in college

NO

Balt - definately

SD

Chi

all have a chance to take him

I agree, Arkcowboys. Pass Rushers are a Premium!

Anthony Spencer and DeMarcus Ware for years to come.  That could be our version of Shaun Phillips and Shawne Merriman.

And Wade Phillips would definitely know how to use these heat-seeking OLBm.

I sure as he__ don't want Philly nabbin' Spencer.

I'd be pi_____d as he__ @ The King if that happened.
