Romo in contract year
This has been a somewhat under-reported story, but Tony Romo is entering the final year of his contract. The Cowboys and Romo’s agent have been talking and Romo hopes a deal will get done before the season starts.
The Cowboys' regular season does not start until Sept. 9, but quarterback Tony Romo hopes to have a new contract completed by the time he attempts his first pass against the New York Giants.
"I'd definitely like it before the season began, but you never know how these things go," he said. "I know the Jones family. They know me. We'll come to a conclusion."
As the article notes, this is a tricky negotiation. The Cowboys obviously feel good about Romo and hope he’s the future, passing on Brady Quinn proved that. But how much money and how many years do they want to give to a QB who has only started 11 games? The Cowboys aren’t exactly boxed-in here, but they are a little bit in the corner on this one. They seem to be saying that Romo is their man, so they probably need to make a good-faith offer in that direction. Of course, with two first round picks in next year’s draft, I guess all options are on the table. Romo wants something done before the season but the Cowboys might want to see a little of the season before they make their commitment. It’s something to watch over the next couple of months.

A year ago, Greg Ellis had every right to rip the Cowboys.
The team moved the veteran defensive end to linebacker in a transparent attempt to reduce his role and hasten his departure, so Ellis demanded a restructured contract as a sign of good faith.
This year, he shouldn't complain about his deal, which has three years left on it.
WTF? A transparent attempt to reduce his role and hasten his departure? Hmm...let’s see exactly how transparent that was. A football coach decides to implement the 3-4 defense on a team and decides a veteran doesn’t fit the scheme at his current position. He moves him to somewhere he thinks he can succeed, works with him all through training camp, and compares him to one of his beloved former players, Willie McGinest. He gives him the starting position over his #1 draft pick, and proceeds to play him there every game. The veteran player has a great first half of the season, is on pace to have numbers equaling his career best, before he’s injured for the rest of the year.
Yup, that sure sounds like Parcells was attempting to hasten his departure. Transparent as mud. I think the better explanation is that Ellis complained last year because he was afraid he might not be able to do the job at OLB. In fact, Parcells seemed to have more confidence that Ellis could do the job than Ellis had in himself. If Ellis hadn't gotten injured, we may never have even drafted Anthony Spencer. Parcells was on his way to extending Ellis' time in Dallas before the injury occured.
Other than that, JJT writes a pretty decent article.

pay Romo now
everyone knows Romo is the real deal and will be a very good qb in this league for many years to come. Last year in his first starting season he compiled a 95 qb rating and will continue to improve each and every year. If it wasn't for Tony, the Cowboys don't even sniff the playoffs last season.
Jerry needs to pay him at least what Matt Schuab received, if not more. He's the franchise and should be compensated as such.

I hate to be the Grinch today but...
...I'm not so sure giving Romo a new contract now is the way to go. I think the wise way to proceed is to wait and see if Romo is the franchise QB and then sit down with him when the season is over. Yes, you run the risk of losing him to free agency, but I think the chances of that happening are very slim. I can't think of an elite QB who has left his team in his prime via free agency. There is always the franchise tag to keep him from leaving.
If you pay him now, you run the risk of over-paying for a flash-in-the-pan. And if it is a fat contract, it will have ramifications for years to come.
I see two risk/reward scenarios:
Scenario 1) Wait. He becomes the real deal. Now you have to pay him A LOT of money or risk losing him.
Scenario 2) Pay him now for less. He turns out not to be a franchise QB and more of a Jay Feeley/Rob Johnson pretender. Now you need to look at getting a QB with one (or both) of your 1st round picks next year and giving that guy a lot of money also (and hoping he is not a bust.) Now you have a lot of money tied up in the QB position.
I choose option 1. If he has a great year and you have to pay him more...fine. At least now you know you have your guy. And as I said, I don't think there is a good chance of losing him.

If the Cowboys feel he's the real deal...
which he is, then you pay him now. He's a franchise qb and will win a lot in Big D.

I love Romo, but there is no way in hell you give a big money contract to a player that hasn't played a full 16 game season. Evaluate him over a 16 game season then decide if he is our franchise QB. If not, we have two #1 picks to go get one. You can't commit the money it will take to sign a franchise QB without knowing what you have first. Last season was not enough of a evaluation period to know if he is, or isn't a franchise QB.

so you really think
there is a huge difference between 16 games and 12 games? I don't think so.

C'mon
Terry open your eyes! Romo was horrible the last six games of the season. He almost threw as many INT's as TD's down the stretch.
Don't get me wrong I'm a huge Tony Romo fan, but logically and I'm sure Jerry thinks the same he needs to see more of Tony before making a huge financial commitment to him.
How can anyone say with a straight face Romo is a franchise QB without seeing him do it on a consistent basis?

Romo wasn't horrible
that is just an assnine statement. Romo didn't play as well as his first 5 games, but he played as well as can be expected from a first year qb whose team totally collasped around him. In those games down the stretch, his O line and defense totally bailed on him. No qb would be successful under those circumstances.
Romo compiled a 95 qb rating despite that and lead the team to the playoffs. Thats all I need to see to know he's a franchise qb

All I can say is I hope you are not a owner or excecutive of a company because you are too easily impressed. Easy for you to say also because you aren't the one who would have to fork out a 80 to 100 million dollar contract depending how long they sign him for.
Romo is under contract for another year, let's see what he can do over a 16 games season is all I say before giving him a huge contract. The last thing we need is to handcuff the organization for 4 or 5 years if Romo is not the real deal.

All I can say you're not a very good evaluator of real talent when you see it, because I don't need 16 games to know Romo is the real deal. I knew it fairly early last season.

I guess
Neither is Grizz or the latest Q & A from Tim Cowlinshaw? Because they just agreed what many are saying. Let Romo play and earn his contract this season. It will benifit himself and the organization in a long run. Let him set his market value. What's the big rush to sign him to a long term deal? Romo had a good, not a great year. Let Romo prove he can be a good consitant starter over a 16 game season.

If it benefits Romo to wait...
then why is he asking for a new contract now? If wants to set his market value at this time, I think that benefits the Cowboys not him but if he wants it done now, Jerry should be all for it because the more he waits, the more he'll have to pay.

money quote in the JJT article
A conspiracy theorist might suggest Ellis was making a veiled threat to use his injury as an excuse not to play. Actually, that's not a bad negotiating ploy, but history suggests Ellis has too much character to do that.
He loves the game. It hurts him more than most when the Cowboys lose. Too many times, I've seen him sitting at his locker wearing a sweaty grass-and-blood-stained jersey, mourning a loss nearly an hour after the game ended.
Ellis has been an important member of the Cowboys during the turbulence of the last decade. He's one of the few players Jones has been able to count on to deliver a quality performance though good times and bad.
He sets a great example for the younger players on the practice field and in the weight room for how to prepare. No one studies harder, and everyone on the defense goes to him for advice for matters on and off the field.
Then there's all of the work he's doing on the field and in the meeting room to prepare first-round pick Anthony Spencer for the regular season. Trust me, few players have that type of commitment to an organization.
This is the reason I've defended Ellis, he's been the ultimate warrior through some of the dark times of this franchise. Its too bad Jones can't compensate him outside the scope of the cap because if anyone deserves a big signing bonus, its Greg.

Exactly Ellis has been a good player and leader
for us for years, he is just pissed about his contract situation. Its not like he killed a man as some are making him out to be.

Ellis is not O.J. but...
...as Grizz points out he was full of angst over his move to OLB last off-season, even publicly questioning his own ability to make the switch, while at the same time asking for a new contract. That one did not make much sense...but this offseason he just seems fully detached from reality. A new contract for a player who just suffered an injury that can ruin a career? Come again? Maybe we should have extended Marco Rivera also?
If he was thinking straight he would know that being released is not a good option for him. Who is going to a DE coming off a ruptured achilles tendon a nice contract? (Besides the Redskins I mean.)
Ellis has been a good player and leader...I think he just gets worked up and it causes him not to think straight.

How does Ellis compare to Rivera?

Ok, so. Does that really warrant all the bashing and calls for his benching that I keep on hearing? Is being upset over your contract and complaining about it a huge sin? Give me a break. Sometimes fans can be a little ridiculous and unrealistic.

Ellis is being unrealistic
Why should he be upset over his contract...especially now? That is the issue.
If you don't like my Marco Rivera analogy, how about Kevin Smith? He is the cornerback who ruptured his achilles immediately after signing a nice new deal. He was never the same player.
Is being upset over your contract and complaining about it a huge sin?
Maybe not a huge sin, but certainly an unnecessary distraction. And when the complaining is baseless it amounts to whining and an even more unnecesary distraction.
I love Ellis for working hard and mentoring young guys like Spencer. I just hope that these young guys don't emulate the way he handles his business.

You are assuming Ellis won't come back from his
injury. Everything I have seen and heard says he most likely will. And I am not saying it is alright for him to be upset over his contract. I am saying its not alright for fans to bash him for something as stupid as that.

He got a nice signing bonus...
...in 2003 when he signed his seven-year contract. Does Ellis think all teams operate like the Redskins and restructure deals every offseason--converting salary to signing bonus? He must.
Maybe he should blame his agent for not sticking in a ridiculous roster bonus that would necessitate a release or restructure.

Our corners are going to have to be on their game
against Detroit this year. They have probably the best WR duo in the league (sorry T.O. and T.G.)
From Hashmarks:
In more pleasant Lions news, one of the club's college scouts called yesterday to say he hadn't seen anyone like Calvin Johnson in the past 25 years.
"I don't even know how he can improve," he said. "He can get to any ball. The quarterbacks were all wide-eyed out there."

either that or
we'll have to put Kitna on his back a lot.

Holding my nose
and tiptoing past the JJT pile. I am an Ellis admirer but when I read the idiot praising Ellis I think perhaps I am wrong and should simply wish we get rid of him. I am glad you are calling JJT out for his defecation in our back yard.
Nice to throw a Romo story in here Grizz so it is not a wasted post.
