5 Questions with a Giants blog
SB Nation’s New York Giants blogger, ETVal, has instituted a "5 Questions" series with the rest of the NFC East blogs. I answered his questions which are posted over at Big Blue View, so head on over and check out my latest babblings. In return, he answered my questions which I have posted below.
By the way, is it a consensus that we hate the Redskins the most, or have the Giants or Eagles crept their way up in your hate-o-meter? Anyway, on to the Q&A.
BTB: What's up with the Tom Coughlin situation? Last year, there seemed to be a mini-revolt against Coughlin, yet the organization brought him back for another year. What's going on there?
ETVal: Coughlin's in a tricky spot. He's gotten the team to the playoffs two straight years, yet the feeling is they have underachieved and few people really like him. He's asked for less complaining in the media, and so far the team seems to be on the same page with him. It doesn't hurt the locker room unity that Tiki Barber is gone. He was the primary critic. Coughlin is probably in a 'make the playoffs or be replaced by Parcells-Cowher-Weis-Schottenheimer-Belichick ' type situation.
BTB: The big question, how do you replace Tiki Barber's production on the field? Every time we played the Giants we knew we had to contain Tiki. What are the Giants doing in that area?
ETVal: The Giants will use a combination of Brandon Jacobs and Reuben Droughns as their primary ball carriers. They expect big things from Jacobs, a 265-pound bruiser, and so do I. He's powerful, fast, shifty for a big guy and chomping at the bit for this every-down opportunity. The running game will be OK, but I do expect the Giants to look for Eli Manning to make more big plays.
BTB: We have Terrell Owens, but you guys also got a couple of out-spoken and sometimes petulant receivers. What's up with Jeremy Shockey and Plaxico Burress this offseason?
ETVal: Shockey and Burress are, well, Shockey and Burress. They worked out in the infamous 'U workouts' in Miami during the off-season, as usual. I'd expect lots of big plays from them, as usual, and lots of complaining when Manning misses them, as usual. These are the two guys who could make problems for Coughlin. I think a lot of people around the Giants are hoping Manning will grow a set and finally put these two guys in their places when they start whining. I'm not holding my breath waiting for that, though.
BTB: Eli Manning? You guys did a lot to get him, but from an outside perspective he hasn't lived up to expectations. What's the feeling among the Giants faithful and inside the organization about his future?
ETVal: You're right, he has not lived up to expectations. Among the Manning-Rivers-Roethlisberger trio, the big three QBs available in 2004, Eli is definitely No. 3 on that list right now. The Giants would be farther along if they had just used their first pick (No. 4) on Roesthlisberger. The Manning question is the most divisive one when it comes to the Giants. Some think he is steadily improving and will be a good QB. Some think he is as good as he is ever going to be. Some think he will blossom into a star without Tiki and with a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Still others think he'll get run out of town after this season if he doesn't play well. I'm hopeful that Manning will be fine. I think he's better now than a lot of people believe, and that he will be good, but not great, for a long time. If he bombs out, the franchise is probably set back for years to come.
BTB: Which is the bigger concern going into this season, the offense or the defense?
ETVal: Surprisingly, I would say the offense. The Giants defense was sometimes non-existent last season, but I think many of those problems have been addressed. They have a new, more aggressive defensive coordinator in Steve Spagnuolo. Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Corey Webster should be healthy. Kawika Mitchell and Mathias Kiwanuka should be improvements over what the Giants had at OLB last season. Aaron Ross should help their pass coverage.
The real questions are on offense. How good will Eli be? Can David Diehl successfully move from guard to left tackle to replace Luke Petitgout? Can Jacobs adequately replace Barber? Can Amani Toomer come back from his knee injury? Can Steve Smith or Sinorice Moss give the Giants a capable third receiver? Do they have anybody who can play fullback? Lots of questions, and we won't know the answers until the games start.

without Tiki
the G Men will be hurtin' this year. Jacobs might turn out to be a fine RB, but he's no Tiki, not by a long shot.
Eli will be average at best and turn out to be one of the real busts in recent years.

Yeah
I can't see Jacobs and Droughns coming close to the problems Tiki gave every team in the league. And putting more pressure on Eli to come up big is NOT a good thing.
My rankings would look like this:
Dallas/Philly
Philly/Dallas
Washington
New York
But I am always wrong about the East, so who knows?

redskins is a more good natured type hate
I guess thats a bit of an oxymoron. I most enjoy our rivalry with them I guess.
Eagles I just despise. I think they have dirty fans and sorry organization.

Close
I think the behavior of some of their fans at the stadium is among the worst in American sports. I respect the organization, but the teamhas had had the Cowboys numbers more than any other over the past ten years, so they stick in the craw the most.

I hate the Eagles the most
Don't get me wrong, I still hate the Skins, but I really despise Philly, their fans are the worse, in a class of their own, with Giants and Steelers Fans a distance 2nd and 3rd.

BTW, Grizz
Nice job on your answers to the Giants' blog site. I think you summed it up nicely.

I really can't talk smack aginst Eli
He has beat us enough times and has come close on a couple other occasions (regardless of reasons/excuses). He also damn near beat his brother last year and probably would have if it wasn't for a bogus offensive pass interference call! (at least I think that was the call, can't really remember )

I don't think he's a terrible QB
or a bad guy. But I also don't think he's ready to pick up additional slack with Tiki gone. Could be wrong though.
I guess the concern for the all NFC East teams has to be at QB. Eagles are worried about McNabb's health; Manning's consistency and development is a question mark; Romo's got a limited track record; and Campbell is quite inexperienced (with no really viable back-up).
I'd give Romo the best odds of playing up to or better than expectations. McNabb will play well as long as he can stay healthy, but he has nothing behind him if he goes down. The Giants lost ground on offense (on the line and at RB). The Skins didn't add much in the way of offensive playmakers for Campbell.

Mark Brunell isn't a viable backup?
Presuming he recovers from injury, I'd argue he's a better option than Brad Johnson.

Brunell
Trust me Skin Patrol, we all PRAY that Brunell ends up in the lineup.
Although, I think you're right about Brad. Neither are viable backups to come in and lead a team to the playoffs. Both are just viable backups to teach the starters, while we fans all hold our breath everytime our QB is hit.

No Brunell can still play
Didn't he have a record setting game last season?
by Burt D on Jun 21, 2007 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would pray that Brunell doesn't play
but he's also the back up quarterback. The point is, teams can't afford to keep two starting quarterbacks on their roster. If I had to choose between a guy who won us games and took us to the playoffs as recently as last year, and some developmental backup, I'd take Mark Brunell in a heart beat. He's the ideal backup: he is extremely careful with the football, knows the offense, and has won games recently. You can't really ask for more out of your backup.

Won us games...
as recently as last year. Took us to the playoffs two years ago. My bad.

Not that Passer Rating
is a worthwhile metric of anything but, interestingly, Mark Brunell has a higher PR than Tony Romo when blitzed. He's difficult to sack if only because he checks down so quickly.
by Skin Patrol on Jun 21, 2007 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hard to say
My impression from last year was that the Skins had a better O-line than Dallas last year, meaning they picked up blitzes considerably better. The Boys were AWFUL, to quote Greenie...

No, not two starters
but you balance the risk. Jacksonville has an iffy QB (injury) but a solid backup. Coulda said the same about Atlanta until Blank did coke or something and handed Schaub over to the Texans for two magic beans and some beads. The Dolphins look OK. The Pack is fine...
If I had a criticism of Gibbs and Danny, I'd say that they decided to replace Brunnell a year late, but sometimes things just work out that way.
by dunkman on Jun 21, 2007 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Brunell and Johnson both stink
If they're playing, neither Cowboys nor Redskins have any chance.
by Terry on Jun 21, 2007 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I mean to take the team all the way.
I think his skills have deteriorated each year since he got to DC. And no, Brad is not any better and may be worse. My point was only that if Campbell struggles, there's really nowhere to turn. It's also a risk with Romo, but less so.
But I also think that no team in the East has a great option at the back-up QB spot. The biggest risk is in Philly where McNabb has had trouble staying on the field. The second biggest risk is in DC because Campbell is the youngest starter. Third is Dallas, fourth is NY.

backups qb's
look, in todays NFL backup qb's are nothing more than old men past their prime (Brunell, Johnson) or developmental types. No team is going to win if they have to rely on their backup to win games.
Gone are the days of Frank Reich or Bernie Kosar coming in to save the day. The bottom line is if you have a franchise qb, your backup is going to stink, you can't have your cake and eat it to.

I hate the Eagles
I hate the Eagles far worse than I hate the Redskins. The Cowboys vs Redskins rivalry has tradition behind it. The Eagles, well, they are just a club of losers, with no rings, and the worst fans in the NFL.
by Philosopher on Jun 21, 2007 3:14 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Same here
I enjoy beating the Skins (and hate losing to them) because their fans hate the Cowboys so much. I love the Rivalry more than I hate the Redskins.
I despise the Eagles. Losing to them hurts the worst, and beating them feels the best.
The only other team that comes close, for me, is the 49ers, and that hatred is on hold until they become competitive again.

Agreed
But I still have to put the Redskins first. Their fans would have booed Irvin too. But I admit, few victories in the past few seasons felt sweeter than when McNabb went down and Roy had that pick 6 a couple years ago. And few plays felt worse than Bledsoe's horrific pick 6 in Philly last year.

What do you fear...
On the Giants question, the biggest thing I fear is a repeat of the last 5 game collapse. We've sucked in the end over the last several seasons. If it happens this year, we need to scrap and rebuild -- it would show the players personalities/whatever drives the failure. I'm hoping it was Parcell's schemes getting broken and the rule by fear blowing up.
