Dallas Cowboys behind the Detroit Lions?

Peter King has his NFL Power Rankings listed in his latest MMQB article.

So naturally I scanned for the Dallas Cowboys position, hoping to see them in the Top 10, but the King is not as high on the Cowboys as he was last year when he predicted we’d go to the Super Bowl. Nope, we’re towards the middle of the pack according to Pete.

14. Dallas: The Cowboys, post-Parcells, seem like they've just used their Get Out Of Jail Free Card. Bill's structure and rules are gone with let-'em-play Wade Phillips in charge. Be careful what you wish for. The Cowboys are a team on the precipice. They could dominate if Tony Romo is a B-plus quarterback, and they could be .500 if he stumbles. I'm betting it's somewhere between.

We know that King loved Parcells, so just by the fact Parcells was no longer here, the Cowboys would be downgraded in his rankings. No big deal, I’m not sure where the Cowboys should be ranked either, although my sense is that it’s higher than 14th.

But King didn’t just stop with ranking us kind of low, he had to throw a major indignity right into our faces. Located just one spot ahead of us on the list is none other than the Detroit Lions. Oh the humanity! We’re below the Lions, say it isn’t so.

What grave injustice have we inflicted on the King that he must humiliate us so? Is it just the departure of Parcells? It’s the frickin’ Lions. Now I know people will be quick to point out that the Lions beat us last year. True enough, but by that logic we beat the Colts so we should be ranked ahead of them. But who can think logically when we’ve come in behind the Lions!

The King must abdicate his throne, or at least move us ahead of Detroit!

All kidding aside, the Lions could be a much improved team this year. They certainly can score points under Mike Martz and his version of the original West Coast offense, otherwise known as the timing offense, or the "let’s throw it long and use some power running to crush our enemies" offense. Plus, they have the newest high-powered offensive weapon to hit the NFL, the man, the myth, Calvin Johnson.

Still, ranked behind the Lions? Can we sue for libel?

BTW, Sean Yuille runs an outstanding Detroit Lions blog for SB Nation that can be found here.

OK

But someone pity-post to my diary since I DID get it in on time...

King has nothing behind most of predictions. I am beginning to think he uses sports discussion and NFL rankings as a hook to get you to read his commentary on coffee, politics and travel notes.

Personally, I think his number 24 Redskins will beat his number 13 Lions. Now, can we talk about global warming and Starbucks, please???

Sue?

I guess we could if we can prove our case!

garbage

Lets see: detroit is without a decent O line and a decent Defense. And they are supposed to be better then us?

Lions 39 Cowboys 31

Perhaps you missed the last game of the 2006 season when Kitna tore up da boys for 300+ yards and 4 TDs.  I know the Lions are pretty sad but they kicked the boys butts in Big D with nothing to play for except the top overall pick which they lost to the Raiders.

Why don't you beat the Lions first before you start dissing them.

by DaBoysSuck on Jul 16, 2007 1:49 PM CDT reply actions

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once

in a while.  The Cowboys have beaten the Lions 2 of the past 3 times.  And they'll beat them again this year.

By that logic

The Cowboys should have gotten the Lombardi trophy because they beat the Colts last season. I think the Lions have earned dissing for their performance over the past 10 years, just like the Pats deserve respect. As Parcells said, you are what your record says you are. What again was Detroit's record?

Point here is that Detroit still has some serious flaws to address so it's mystifying that suddenly they go from bottom of the league to the top half. Does that really make sense to you?

King

King as a reporter is a horrible predictor.  He is so bad, that any time he picks against the Cowboys, I cheer.  He picked Julius Jones to be his fantasy sleeper the year he got hurt and missed half a season.  The fact the he picked us low is a pretty good indication that we'll do well this year.

Anybody who picks JuJo as a fantasy sleeper

can't be right in the head ;)

King is an idiot

Can anyone remember the last time he made a correct prediction? No, I didn't think so.

I'm glad he's dissing Romo and the 'Boys, that means we'll have success for sure.

That and

keeping Cowboys off Madden 2008 should do the trick...

by dunkman on Jul 16, 2007 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions

this ranking is much more accurate

from this article in the Charlotte Observer.

Even if

It doesn't turn out that way, it is at least a more reasonable prediction based on what we know today. Although I wonder about the Chargers ahead of the Colts. They are a talented team, but the coaching shake-up seems like it would put some drag on their performance.

by dunkman on Jul 16, 2007 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions

despite what the homers over at Stapede Blue

are trying to convince themselves, that Indy is still the team to beat, they lost too many good players not to suffer a decline in play defensively, especially if Bob Sanders gets injured again.

Therefore just based on talent alone, SD and NE should be ranked higher.

Brownies

Like Burger King, this ranking has the Browns at #32 also.  I think this is a good list, but Chicago is ranked too high.  They are going to fall back to the pack this year.

LET'S HOPE KING IS RIGHT!!!!!!!

at least when it comes to this...

  1. Cleveland: The Browns are beginning to draft their way out of the abyss. But it's a pretty deep abyss.

This is the same guy who had Kitna as a

top ten qb.  The only reason he does this is to try to rile people up and have people talk about his articles.  Rather than just putting out conventional wisdom and nobody taking notice of him.  Whatever I can't wait till we make him look like an idiot.

But that aside.  Detroit had major secondary issues last year and as far as I can tell they have done nothing to remedy that.  In fact they traded their top corner to Denver.

Secondly in regards to St. Louis being ranked so high, they have a really bad defense, I can't see them doing that well at all.  Although with the addition of Brian Leonard and Drew Bennett. they should have a super explosive offense this year.

Oh and the Romo comment really pissed me off

I hope Romo and T.O. have pro bowl seasons and rub it in in Burger King and Dr. Z's and the rest of the people at SI's face.

exactly

I got news for Burger King, Romo is an A+ qb and he will rub it in his face this season.

I think

SF did a lot more in the off-season than Detroit. And I would be shocked if Detroit beats any team in the NFC East. But then again, I was shocked last season when the Boys choked on that one...

King is old school

and believes you get respect because you earn it. Players mouthing off like they are is one indicator of a team that does not respect themselves. King may be picking up on that. Or he may only be looking for the next Starbucks.

by lee3022 on Jul 17, 2007 2:23 AM CDT reply actions

Earned?

So what exactly have the Lions earned. Kitna and Furrey have both said they will win 10+ games. Talk about 'mouthing off' as  you said. What have they won, like 10 games in the last 4 years? That's defintely earning the respect.
