Cowboys have plans for Isaiah Stanback
I’m working on some stuff with Shango this weekend, so I haven’t posted that much. But I’ll be back in full blogger-mode on Monday. Here are some goodies to discuss in the meantime.
DC.com has a good article on the return of Isaiah Stanback. He’s learning that knowing the playbook and executing the routes are two different things. Al least he’s starting the process. Once he’s up to speed, is sounds like Wade has plans for him.
Phillips said before the team can integrate Stanback into special teams, or work him as their emergency quarterback, or scheme up trick plays for him, he's got to learn how to be a receiver. It's a plus, though, that he has studied up on each position - split end, flanker and slot.
"I know every (position)," Stanback said. "I approached the offense like I was a quarterback."
Just knowing position responsibilities doesn't mean the rookie's ready to play any of them just yet, though.
"I've got to learn how to run routes, I've got to learn releases, everything," he said.
Emergency QB? Trick plays? Me likey.

Some of our missing starters should be ready to go this week and play in the next preseason game.
Hamlin could return Monday: Free safety Ken Hamlin missed practice on Saturday with a slight concussion. He missed Thursday's preseason opener after taking a lick from running back Jackie Battle last week. Hamlin said he expects to return Monday.
{snip}
Flozell Adams and Marc Colombo missed the preseason opener because they were recovering from knee surgeries. Both are expected to play against Denver. Colombo and Adams have looked pretty smooth in practices over the last few days.

Kickoff coverage was a disaster. Wade didn’t let it go unnoticed.
The first part of special teams drills focused on kickoff coverage. Coach Wade Phillips was a little concerned with the kickoff coverage unit but said it used a lot of different combinations against the Colts.

The Hamlin Injury
Leaves me a bit concerned. Given his recent history with head injuries, I am left wondering if this is a unique incident. What worries me is if he, like many athletes, has become more prone to such injuries, and should be considering retirement.
Does anyone have any update on this? Has it already been covered and I missed it? I am expecting big things from our defense, but if FS continues to be a weak link, we could be in for a frustrating year.
The obvious "part two" of this question. (And again, I may have missed the discussion on this) ... how is Pat Watkins coming along???
Considering retirement?
UM... Thanks... I read the same thing
everyone else did. My comment has nothing to do with whether he's practicing this week or starting against the Giants.
What I was hoping for is any information regarding the long-term health of Hamlin. Is his injury from 2 years ago completely behind him? Or is there any concern that the recent concussion is connected? That was my real question, and I did not as yet see anything written about this. Am I the only one worried about this?
You have to wonder
why a guy with his skill set lasted so long on the FA market...

Free agent market
There were actually a surprising number of safeties who were FA's this past offseason. Most were of the SS variety, but there was at least one former Pro Bowler (Darius) signing before camp started. Seattle quite openly gave up on Hamlin, and I'm sure that cooled the interest in him a bit. I still think he'll be a good fit for us, though.
Hamlin's head
You raise a good point DalaiLuke. I have to suspect that Hamlin's history of head injuries and this latest concussion are no coincidence. We all know through watching Troy and others that you get more susceptible to those injuries the more you have, and it's something Hamlin should be watching in terms of his longevity on the field and off. Not to be too mercenary about it, and the team should look out for him, but he's here on a 1 year contract. Both he and the team need him to be on the field. Hopefully he can avoid these hits during the year and Battle will take it easy on him in practice. But it's something to keep an eye on.
Stanback
I love the idea of him being a weapon on offense at some point like he is talking about. But maybe he should learn the WR spot inside and out before he even attempts filling up his plate with any else.
He hasn't even been practicing catching punts and he is talking about him doing other stuff?
The fact that Wade is staying on the course it kind of worries me that Stanback always throws in a comment here and there about something else.
Trick plays
I do agree with DCFanatic in the sense that Stanback does need to perfect the WR aspect before even considering other things. However, the idea that we all have, and that Grizz so nobly mentioned, is will trick plays be part of Jason Garrett's gameplan?
I am extremely hopeful that he, and his staff, are devising a few tricks up their sleeves to incorporate Stanback's talents as a QB, and most importantly as a WR.
trick plays Stand back is a poor mans Randel El
So, you think that they will give a roster spot to a rookie 4th rounder that can't contribute? I'm thinking....... practice sqaud at best. They waived last years 4th rounder in training camp. I don't see why this guy is better than skyler green who actually did play wr and return kicks in college.

Why you harshing Stanback's gig?
by Dave Halprin on Aug 12, 2007 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions
Don't think he will amount to much
not being harsh telling it the way I see it - I saw him play in College - he was like I said nothing special - he may be an AFL or CFL player - sorry guys JMO

He'll get picked up easy on PS waivers
Jaguars were set to take him with the 14th pick in the round according to Isaiah when he got a surprise call from Dallas. Skyler Green didn't make it on the practice squad and he isn't close to being the prospect that Stanback is currently.
People forget the practice squad means absolutely nothing. All the practice squad does is give the team the right to practice a player despite the fact that they don't own him under contract. Any other NFL team could walk onto Valley Ranch and pull him off the field if they wanted him and Jerry couldn't do anything about it.
Whose roster spot would Stanback be taking anyway? He'd basically be the 53rd man.
you got inside info
Jaguars were set to take him with the 14th pick in the round according to Isaiah when he got a surprise call from Dallas.
doubtful another wasted fourth rounder - I eat my words if turns out to be the best thing since
M Irvin at WR - but like I said hes nothing special

OT: Cris Collinsworth has Cowboys in NFC East
At halftime in Sunday's Seattle-San Diego game, Cris Collinsworth predicted the Cowboys to oust the Eagles as NFC East champs.
he studied
It's a plus, though, that he has studied up on each position - split end, flanker and slot.
but can he catch the BALL and run with it

A wasted pick
when we could of had a back up for Fergie NT Paul Soliai 6'4" #330
which is a much more pressing need than a project player
or CB Tanard Jackson
who were both drafted after Stand back - Jerry's pet pick like Henson etc

its too bad Arkcowboys
you can't recognize real talent when you see it as this kid is going to be really special. I can see him being a special teams demon returning punts this season as well as developing into a go to type receiver in the future.
His future looks really bright and I'm glad the Cowboys were patient with him.
yea its to bad Terry
what have you seen him do ????????????
nothing I am guessing
I saw him play last year he's an average college player - below avg QB that for sure - he may run like the wind but can he do it with the ball
and don't ever say that I can't recognize talent - cause I have a feeling I been around a few more years than you - I can pick a team and am pretty good at it
4 th rounder we should have taken Soliai at NT

oh really
Let me ask you something then, what did I ever see Romo do before I declared him to be a future star last season at this time?
I'm definitely saying you can't recogize talent if you think Stanback isn't enormously talented and gifted.
If you have been around longer than me than that means you've been around football for more than 30 years. Somebody with that kind of experience should know Stanback has immense potential.
he has potential
Potontial ? thats a very broad word there - hell even R Leaf had potential
Romo still has to prove he can do it for 16 ganmes
he's got a unproven line
new play caller
new HC
New Defense which looked lousy last week
and let me see I hit on 3 of our draft picks in 06
and Spencer this year
and will predict next years first round pick - DMAC
well I will never change your mind an you won't change mine - yes I can pick out the players from the fakers
so lets leave it at that
Stanback has 'a ways to go'
That's what WR coach Ray Sherman told me after rookie Isaiah Stanback's second NFL practice.

Ryan Leaf was also an idiot
and all indications are that Stanback has great character and a tremendous work ethic, so when you combine that with immense athletic talent, you can't help but get excited about his potential.
Actually Stanback was Ireland's pet cat

I'll take Kathy for $1000, Alex
time will tell
and I think time is on stanback's side. I, for one, think this guy is a pure football player...a natural athlete. Once these injuries are behind him, he will flourish.
I definately got your back on this one Terry!!!!
