Dallas Cowboys look sharp again, beat Broncos 31-20
For the second straight week the Dallas Cowboys jumped on their opponent early in the game and dominated when the starters were on the field before cruising to a 31-20 win over the Denver Broncos. The Cowboys starting offense picked up where it left off last week and scored 24 first-half points even thought they turned the ball over twice and Martin Gramatica missed a 51-yard FG. The turnovers came on a Tony Romo INT on a play where Miles Austin slipped coming out of his break and Sam Hurd fumbled the ball after a short catch.
Not to be outdone, the defense cleaned up the few mistakes the offense had by holding the Broncos to two FG’s in the first half. They also got their own turnover when Marcus Spears fell on a Jay Cutler fumble, and were able to get enough pressure on the young signal-caller to turn his night into a very ordinary affair. The Cowboys weren’t able to pile up the sack numbers, but they created enough "hurries" to throw Cutler and the Broncos out of any kind of rhythm on offense.
The usual suspects turned in solid performances. Tony Romo was 11/18 for 122 yards, Marion Barber had 57 yards on 11 carries and 2 TD’s, Julius Jones chipped in with 31 yards on 9 carries and a TD. But the leading rusher was 3rd-string RB Tyson Thompson who racked up 75 yards on 16 carries. Patrick Crayton had a good night receiving, 3 catches for 61 yards, but had trouble in catching punts when he failed to fair catch one at the 23-yard line and fumbled another although he recovered it.
The Cowboys attack lost some zip on offense when the second and third-strings took over, but there were still bright spots. Besides the aforementioned Thompson, 4th-round draft pick Isaiah Stanback made his debut in style by catching two passes, one for a TD on a ball he had to reach to catch. He also was used as a kick returner a couple times, but never ran the ball back.
Backup middle linebackers Kevin Burnett and Bobby Carpenter were very active in the second-half. Burnett was in on four tackles and made a great play in pass coverage. Carpenter got to rush the passer a little more and got some pressure while also intercepting a pass. The INT came courtesy of Joey Thomas who hit the Bronco’s WR to pop the ball in the air, and he also had some very nifty pass breakups, although he did give a big pass interference call.
The Cowboys suffered injuries to Anthony Fasano (shoulder) and Jackie Battle (ankle) and they also held out Terence Newman (heel) and Oliver Hoyte (neck). WR Miles Austin had a few plays were his game wasn’t at its best; it was a tough day in some respects for the receiver. And backup tackle James Marten looked like he struggled also.
Martin Gramatica and Nick Folk continue their kicking battle, with both kickers hitting deep kickoffs, and Nick Folk connecting on a 52-yard FG, while Gramatica missed his 51-yard attempt.
Overall, the Cowboys should be very pleased for the second week in a row. A balanced offense that saw coordinator Jason Garrett mix his attack with skill, and a defense that has yet to hit its stride but still is holding opponents down. And the Cowboys haven’t even utilized T.O., Jason Witten or Terry Glenn yet.

Winners & Losers
Some winners & losers:
WINNERS:
Cowboys kickers & punters. Looks like we have a fine extra kicker and punter, both valuable in trades if other teams suffer injuries.
Isiah Stanback.
LBs Carpenter & Burnet.
Tyson Thompson. He looked great. Fast.
Pat McQuistan. Got some great blocks downfield to help TT.
Joey Thomas. The penalty was somewhat bogus, IMHO.
Crayton, even though he fumbled a punt. Nice receiving day. Can you imagine the trick plays with two former QBs at WR?
TE Tony Curtis made some nice catches.
Moose made note of FB Deon Anderson's blocking, although Lou Polite also did a good job.
LOSERS:
TE Adam Bergen. Not a good receiving day, and he made some embarrassing penalties.
CB Nate Jones. Got burned on the 90-yard TD.
OT Marten didn't look good at all.
WR Miles Austin was Tony Romo's target, but caused an INT and failed to catch some balls.
WR Hurd got popped after a catch, but I thought he otherwise looked good.
RB Jackie Battle didn't get on the field. RB Alonzo Coleman did, and showed some speed but failed to break one.

Fair assessments
Those are the guys I noticed both good and bad.
Especially good I thought:
Defense
Burnett and Carp and Ware
Offense
Romo, Barber, TT, Hurd, Crayton, (Stanback gets honorable mention, what a TD grab!)
ST
McBriar (get his tix to Hawaii now), Folk (got good deep KO with hangtime and hit a 52 yd FG right down the middle with room to spare), Reeves, Austin (only on ST part), and TT had some nice KO returns)
Not so Good:
Defense
Nate Jones mistimed his jump on the 90 yd Broncos TD, he was right there in position but couldn't make the play - might have cost him a roster spot.
Offense
James Marten needs a lot of work, he will not be on the field this season, Miles Austin (made some route running mistakes, dropped some passes, in general didn't even look good), Adam Bergen (he's gone when cuts start), the backup guards/center looked weak getting continually pushed into the backfield.
ST
They played well, but need to practice fielding short punts. Thats the only negative I noticed. Otherwise they played much better than 1st game (Wade is using the right deck of cards now)
Leftovers
FB's played well, Anderson showed some good signs that he can play (Hoyte sat out this game)
Curtis looked good
Anthony Henry looked like he dropped another sure INT
Spencer did some good things (pressure and deflected pass), but also lost contain on a couple runs.
Joey Thomas had good tight coverage, his PI penalty was questionable.
Roy and Bradie looked good, weight loss has helped their speed, but hasn't affected their hitting.
A little love for Brad Johnson, I thought he played well, even scrambling for yardage.

Grizz
No broadcast here, but scrolling through the comments was excellent. Thanks for that.
Any feel for the severity of Fasano's injury?

Not even one mention of........
Stanback? I thought he looked pretty impressive. The cowboys might have hit on something there.

Well, I though this was a mention
4th-round draft pick Isaiah Stanback made his debut in style by catching two passes, one for a TD on a ball he had to reach to catch. He also was used as a kick returner a couple times, but never ran the ball back.
No?

Was I Just Seeing What I Wanted to See?
I mean, did my eyes deceive me, or did Marcus Spears look all active and disruptive in that game?
Plus, clearly Julius Jones runs better when he feels all hated-on. They should post a picture of his mom in her underwear on the jumbo-tron before each game.

The kicking battle
I'm pretty sure I saw Gramatica mutter, "Folk!" when Nick made his 52 yard attempt. That 51 yard miss definitely didn't improve Automatica's chances, but it should still be a tight race. Either way, when Nick made his FG, he had me screaming, "Folk Yea!"

This is exactly why
Folk needs to win out. What can you do with Gramatica except "Automatica"? Heck it's not even a word. Folk on the other hand is rich with possibilities.
And a 52 yarder with 8 yards to spare isn't a bad reason either I suppose.

Folk
I was not for drafting Folk. However, I would be remiss if I didn't say "hats off" to those were.
