Dallas Cowboys cut down to 75-man roster
RB Jackie Battle
NT Ola Dagunduro
LB Dedrick Harrington
OT Jason Hilliard
LB Alex Obomese
WR Jerard Rabb
WR Jamaica Rector
WR Jamel Richardson
DT Montavious Stanley
Ohhh, my pet cat Alex Obomese meets the Turk. Shows how much I know. And Coach said he liked the play of Jay Ratliff in the Houston game ( I still like him better at end), so two NT’s are out on the street including last year’s 6th-round pick Montavious Stanley, who we loved on draft day for his exuberant interview after being drafted. Jackie Battle’s good run at camp didn’t translate into a roster spot, but the PS is always a possibility. Jamel Richardson, who some had as their pet cat early, also gets the boot and Jamaica Rector’s injury sealed his fate early.
Some of the better players at the bottom of the roster were cut while some other guys who haven’t done much stick around. I wonder if this is some kind of strategy to get guys on the PS? Anybody know the exact rules about signing these guys after the 75-man deadline?
Hat tip to Cowboys81 who has a diary here.

pet cat(s)
Apology for an earlier post of mine if you (grizz) only adopted obomese. I thought at one time or another you had each of Obomese, Dagunduro AND Battle down as pet cats?

Ola Dagunduro
was only adopted as a pet cat because of his name. The same way I adopted Sammy T at NT last year. I knew he wasn't making it. I do like Battle, but I really never thought anybody but JJ, MB3 and TT would be the backs this year. He was a PS shot at best, which still could happen.
My pet cats that I adopted who I thought might make the roster were Alex Obomese and Joey Thomas. Obomese failed to make it, but Joey Thomas lives on!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
People waivered on their pet cats and became bandwagoners on others. But I, Burt-D, never gave up on Alonzo Coleman. From the first day he was signed I pledged my allegiance to him and never waivered! Not through his plaguing injury, and not while Battle and TT got all the attention. And now he has won this Battle! (pun intended)

If by cut you mean take JuJo's spot on the roster
then yes your right.

Actually Coleman still is high risk
for the final 53. It is possible that Coleman is subject in the trade talks as a filler but hard to imagine Coleman or Battle getting carries unless we lose JJ, MB3 or TT to trade or injury.
Yes - Battle is my pet cat and remains so. The injury he suffered will keep him out several weeks but he may then be back in the PS. Let's see if the trainers continue to work on him. No mention of an injury settlement.
eh he may not make the final 53 man
but he'll at least make the PS. And I think what may happen is JuJo will be involved in a trade for a corner and Coleman will make the roster as a result.

you can
So I guess there's no strategy
in cutting them early. It just seems weird that we kept guys like Damarius Bilbo who hasn't seen the field at WR, the two tackles who never play, Marcus Smith at DE and some other guys we never see over some of these guys who actually played.
Maybe Wade thinks they have a chance to catch on elsewhere and knew they weren't making it here.
I don't know, it just looks like we cut some of our better bottom of the roster talent over some who never play.

Maybe they are going to try Bilbo at corner now
;)

The only strategy
I can imagine is that teams scrutinize the final cut-downs to 53-man rosters to add to their rosters (right now is still harder because they are still faced with their own cuts) and if Dallas is saying Coleman is kept over Battle the vultures may be more inclined to add Coleman after the final cut and forget about Battle who can then go to the practice squad. If Coach tells a player he is cut in August but is welcome to stay in the area and keep himself ready there are some who will do just that in hopes of being added after injury opens up spaces.
bilbo
didn't he play corner for the desperados as well as WR

cuts
Jackie Battle we hardly knew ye.
I admit he was my pet cat.
I'm worried about Newman. I think he will play, but my concern is how much he will drop off.
wonder if these are more below radar
Wonder if a legitimate strategy is to plug some practice squad'ers into this first round of cuts to downgrade their value to other teams. The next cuts would seem to be all the bubble guys, and thus get more attention from others.
Good idea
Plus the last pre-season game is mostly for the backups, and by cutting some of these guys early, they won't get a chance to shine in that game. Could be a bit of stategery so other teams can get more film on possible standouts.

Practice Squad defined in Wikipedia
Each NFL team may keep up to eight members on their "practice squad" in addition to their 53-member main roster. They consist mostly of rookies who were cut in training camps and borderline NFL-caliber players. Both rookies and young veterans are eligible for the practice squad. However, a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than two seasons. Practice squad players practice alongside regular roster players during the week; however they are not allowed to play in actual games. They are paid considerably less than active squad players ($4700 per week or $80,000 per season, in comparison to the NFL minimum rookie salary of $225,000). They are also ineligible for many fringe benefits such as service time, pensions, and the like. They hope to be promoted to the active roster either by their current team, or by another team who is scouting them. They retain free agent status and may sign with any team they wish without compensation to the original team. Many are former college players living in the surrounding area and the vast majority of them are forced to take other jobs to help support themselves during the season and off-season. In fact, the current term evolved from the term "taxi squad", referring to the job that many scout team players held in order to supplement their income.
I got this from this awesome blog called Cat Scratch Reader.com ;)
